School Transfer and Appeals Policies

  • Who May Request a Transfer

    • Families who are new to Wake County (within 10 days after initial assignment).
    • Families who have moved residences within Wake County (within 10 days of updating their address).

You may request a school transfer for the 2018-19 school year during the Request for School Transfer period, Feb. 20-March 6, 2018.

You will be notified by email if your request is approved or denied. If denied, the email will include information about how to schedule an appeal to the Board of Education.

The school board considers student assignment transfers to be appropriate only in rare or exceptional circumstances. Their decision on an appeal is final.

Whether requests will be granted depends on many factors, including the capacity of the school requested and a family's individual circumstances. Review Board Policy 4150 for details.

You may not appeal the final decision of magnet or Early College applications.

School transportation is not provided to to students who receive an assignment based on a transfer request, unless the school is the base school or one of the calendar option schools for your address.*

Contact the Office of Student Assignment for more information.

Request Transfer

Families that experience a change of address or any other life-changing event may request a school transfer.

Is space available at your desired school?

Due to overcrowding, WCPSS administration is denying all transfer requests to certain schools for the 2017-18 school year.  Please note that if a school is open to transfers, that does not guarantee a request will be granted.
Check school status.
