Reporting and Contact Tracing

  • COVID-19 case investigations and contact tracing occur during business hours Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. The process may take longer after days off, if health officials can’t contact someone, or if they are unable to confirm a COVID-19 diagnosis.

    Step 1. Notify your Principal
    You notify your principal. Stay away from everyone until you have received instructions from health officials.

    Step 2. Principal Notifies District
    Principal reports COVID-19 cases to WCPSS COVID-19 Team. Continue staying away from everyone until you have received instructions from health officials.

    Step 3. WCPSS Gathers Info For Wake County Public Health
    COVID-19 Team Member calls you to get this information:

    • When and how were you diagnosed with COVID-19?
    • When were you last on a WCPSS campus?
    • Who were you in close contact with?

    Someone should call you within 2-8 business hours. Answer the phone and provide accurate infomation to the case investigator. Provide a copy of your positive COVID-19 test, if possible.

    Step 4. WCPSS Notifies Wake County Public Health
    WCPSS notifies Wake County Public Health of your COVID-19 case, providing the health department with:

    • Copy of positive test result (if available)
    • Case timeline
    • List of identified possible close contacts for contact tracing

    Step 5. Confirmation Of Covid-19 Diagnosis
    Wake County Public Health verifies and confirms the positive COVID-19 diagnosis.

    Step 6. Wake County Public Health Provides Isolation Guidance
    Wake County Public Health contacts you within 2-10 business days of your report. During that call, they will provide you isolation instructions, and confirm the list of your close contacts. Answer the phone when contacted.

    Step 7. Contact Tracing And Notification Of Contacts
    Wake County Public Health starts contact tracing within 24-48 hours from when you notified your principal. Health officials will provide your close contacts with quarantine instructions.

    Step 8. NCDHHS Text Messaging
    NCDHHS will send a text message to your phone to advise of the length of quarantine.  The recommended time is 14-days, however, WCPSS uses a 7 day or 10-day option depending on circumstances.

    Step 9. Complete Quarantine
