Board Votes on Capped Schools

On Feb. 1, the Wake County Public School System Board of Education voted on school enrollment caps for the 2022-23 school year.

 

Enrollment caps help control crowding at schools. This is important at the elementary level because of a state mandate to reduce K-3 class sizes. This mandate will reduce elementary schools’ flexibility and make it more difficult to accommodate a large student population.

 

When a school is capped, new residents who move into the school’s base attendance area after the date of the cap may not be able to attend their base school. They should still start the enrollment process by contacting the data manager at their base school. It is possible there are available seats in certain grades at a capped school. If there are no available seats, the student will be assigned to a nearby school (overflow school) and will be eligible for district transportation. 

 

Who may attend a capped school?

• An enrollment cap does not impact students currently attending the school.
• Students currently living in the school’s base attendance area before the date the enrollment cap was placed. They must enroll before April 1 of the upcoming school year in order to avoid being assigned to an overflow school.
• Rising kindergarten and other students who pre-register for the upcoming school year living in the school’s base attendance area before the date the enrollment cap was placed. They must register before April 1 in order to avoid being assigned to an overflow school.
• Siblings of students currently attending the capped school who enroll before April 1 of the upcoming school year.
• Children of full-time school district employees who work at the capped school.

El 1 de febrero, la Junta Directiva Escolar de las Escuelas Públicas del Condado Wake votó con respecto a los límites de inscripción escolar (caps) para el año escolar 2022-2023.

 

Los caps ayudan a controlar la sobrepoblación en las escuelas. Lo anterior es importante en el nivel de primaria debido a un mandato estatal de reducir el tamaño de las clases del Kínder al tercer grado. Este mandato reducirá la flexibilidad de las escuelas primarias y hará que sea más difícil acomodar a una gran población estudiantil.

 

Cuando una escuela tenga un límite de inscripción, es posible que los nuevos residentes que se muden al área de asistencia base de la escuela después de la fecha límite no puedan asistir a su escuela base. Las familias deben comenzar el proceso de inscripción comunicándose con el administrador de datos (data manager) en su escuela base. Es posible que haya cupo (asientos) disponible en ciertos grados en una escuela con un límite de inscripción. Si no hay asientos disponibles, el estudiante será asignado a una escuela designada con cupo disponible (overflow school) y será elegible para el transporte escolar. 

 

¿Quién puede asistir a una escuela con límite de inscripción?

• Un límite de inscripción no afecta a los estudiantes que actualmente asisten a la escuela.

• Estudiantes que actualmente viven en el área de asistencia base de la escuela antes de la fecha en que entró en vigor el límite de inscripción. Deben inscribirse antes del 1º de abril del próximo año escolar para evitar ser asignados a una escuela designada con cupo disponible.
• Estudiantes que ingresan al Kínder y otros estudiantes que se inscriban previamente para el próximo año escolar y que viven en el área de asistencia base de la escuela antes de la fecha en que entró en vigor el límite de inscripción. Deben inscribirse antes del 1º de abril para evitar ser asignados a una escuela cercana con cupo disponible.
• Hermanos de estudiantes que actualmente asisten a la escuela que se inscriban antes del 1º de abril del próximo año escolar.
• Hijos de empleados del distrito escolar de tiempo completo que trabajan en la escuela con límite de inscripción.
