Walking to school with tomorrow’s leaders
Strong school communities bring me tremendous joy. Last week I was invited to walk side-by-side with the A.B. Combs Leadership Magnet Elementary School family at their annual Walk to School Day celebration. To see hundreds of students, families and teachers gather at 7:45 a.m. for this school tradition was truly heartwarming. As we paraded along the sidewalks to school, I witnessed the kind of community that makes a student want to show up and learn every day.
As you get to know me, you’ll learn that I love a school assembly. At Combs Elementary, they know how to put on a program. Student leadership was on full display, from student speakers to the student chorus leading the crowd in singing the National Anthem. And the entire event demonstrated the culture of strong school leadership that has fostered such an engaged community.
As leaders-in-training, Combs students get lots of practice in setting goals and tracking their progress. One of my goals in my first hundred days as superintendent is to get to know our district’s school communities. Thank you, Combs family, for helping me with one of my goals.
