Lufkin Road Middle teachers awarded grants from the Apex Public School Foundation
January 31, 2025
Three teachers at Lufkin Road Middle recently received grants from the Apex Public School Foundation (APSF). The APSF is an independent, nonprofit, volunteer organization whose mission is to maintain a fund to enhance student’s educational experience at Apex-area schools within Wake County. This includes three high schools, five middle schools, and 11 elementary schools.
8th-grade teacher Jennifer Lomelino and media specialist Traci Snyder received a $2,500 grant for books to support multilingual students. Their project, Mirrors, Windows & Doors, aims to provide diverse book titles for the school's multilingual learners and ensure they feel represented through books in their home languages. Some of the books will include graphic novels in students' home languages.
Jessica McQuaig, career development coordinator, was awarded the Karen Sinders Memorial Teacher Grant for her project, Advancing Biomedical Literacy Through Technology-Enhanced Learning. She was the first teacher at Lufkin Road to receive this grant, which was established to honor Ms. Sinder’s commitment to her students, staff, and community. The $1,700 grant will purchase virtual reality headsets to allow students to explore and learn more about various career paths.
