Seven WCPSS schools were among 336 North Carolina winners of the Purple Star Award, which recognizes schools that show a major commitment to students and families connected to our nation's military.

Our winners are:

  • Alston Ridge Elementary

  • Bugg Magnet Elementary

  • Durant Road Middle

  • Fuquay-Varina Elementary

  • Millbrook Magnet High

  • Poe Magnet Elementary

  • Willow Springs Elementary

Poe is a first-time winner of the award while the other schools have won previously.

Military families and school communities recognize this award as a valuable asset, with the frequent moves and other unique needs of our military-connected population. In fact, it is not uncommon for a family to ask if a school is a Purple Star school when looking for housing near military installations.

Superintendent Catty Moore, WCPSS Director of School Social Work Michael Pesce, Poe Principal Christine Story, and Orlander Bullock, last year’s WCPSS School Social Worker of the Year and a military veteran, attended the award ceremony yesterday in Raleigh.

Also in attendance were State Superintendent of Public Instruction Catherine Truitt and Brigadier General Colin P. Tuley.

Congratulations to all Purple Star Award schools, and thanks to their staff members for working hard to meet the unique needs of military-connected students and families.
