SRMHS 2024-25 Teacher of the Year: Mrs. Elizabeth Gary

Mrs. Elizabeth Gary began her career as an educator 29 years ago, driven by faith and a sense of purpose. Her mission has been to educate, inspire, and guide young people while fostering an environment where every child feels valued and supported. She is deeply committed to ensuring that each student discovers their potential and feels empowered in their learning journey.
Ms. Gary’s teaching career reached a pivotal moment when she began teaching Physical Education to students in the Extended Content Standards (ECS) program. This role transformed her perspective on education and brought her immense joy and fulfillment. Inspired by her work with ECS students, she established a Unified Track & Field program that promotes inclusion by pairing students with and without disabilities. The program has been a remarkable success, with participants competing in the North Carolina High School State Outdoor Track & Field Championships for two consecutive years.
In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Ms. Gary has taken on multiple leadership roles. She serves as the Professional Learning Community (PLC) Leader for the Healthful Living Department, Case Manager for the Intervention Team, Academic Advisor for the Men’s Basketball Program, and Advisor for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). She also organized the FCA-“Building Fields of Faith” program, which fostered a sense of unity between the school and the local community.
Her dedication extends beyond the classroom to her relationships with students and their families. She is a trusted source of support, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and teamwork in nurturing young people.
Ms. Gary’s commitment to education is deeply rooted in her own academic achievements. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Saint Augustine’s University and a Master of Education in Health Education from East Carolina University.
Her career as an educator and leader reflects her passion, perseverance, and dedication to positively influencing the lives of her students and the broader school community.
