Day #1: A warm welcome from Wake’s youngest learners
October 3, 2023
There is no other place I would rather be than in our schools, where the important work of teaching and learning happens every day. I was honored to start my first day on the job as superintendent with an enthusiastic group of students and staff at Rolesville Elementary School yesterday. This school has made significant strides in growth and proficiency during the past few years, thanks to the tireless efforts of teachers and young learners. From the moment I stepped on this campus, it was clear that the students and staff love school and that school is exactly where they want to be.
I was joined on yesterday’s visit by reporters who were covering my first day and they got to spotlight everything that makes Rolesville Elementary great. There will be many days ahead in which the media won’t be there to highlight the incredible work happening in our schools. And there will likely be challenging days ahead as well. I look forward to celebrating each one of our successes and navigating these challenges together.
A reporter asked me yesterday, “What’s changed about students over the 30 years you’ve worked in education?” My response: nothing. During the last three decades, our students have not changed. They are eager to come into our buildings and learn. They are excited to have a safe place to come to every day where they know a caring and qualified teacher is waiting for them. It was so comforting to see that while walking the halls of Rolesville Elementary today.
During my first 100 days, you’ll have the opportunity to learn more about me, while I learn more about our communities. I look forward to listening, learning and connecting with you. And most of all, I look forward to spending time in our schools and with our students.
Thank you for joining me on this journey.
With gratitude,
Dr. Robert P. Taylor
