Early release days have been added for the 2022-23 school year

Last summer, the North Carolina State Board of Education approved a mandatory initiative for teachers across the state. The Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) program requires a significant amount of training time for teachers to have a deeper understanding of how to teach reading and the science behind it. 

 

The Wake County Board of Education has approved six early release days during the 2022-23 school year to provide this training time. While the six early release days are not sufficient to provide all the time that is needed, we believe it is important to provide some designated time beyond what had previously been planned for the 2022-23 school year.

 

We understand and fully appreciate that this can pose a challenge for families who have child-care issues. Therefore, we will be working with our community partners to ensure that after-school care options are available for those who may need it.

 

We have investigated many different scenarios that would allow teachers the time needed to complete this state-mandated training without having to use personal time such as evenings and weekends. And state law mandates specific beginning and ending dates for school years, which further restricts our options.

 

While there are other dates designated as workdays, they have already been reserved for specific purposes, such as closing out a grading quarter.

 

Families will be receiving more information regarding support for after-school care for those who need it in advance of the beginning of the 2022-23 school year in July.

Se han añadido días de salida temprana en el calendario del año escolar 2022-2023

 

El verano pasado, la Junta Estatal de Educación de Carolina del Norte aprobó una iniciativa obligatoria para los maestros de todo el estado. El programa Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS, los elementos lingüísticos esenciales para maestros de lectura y ortografía) requiere una cantidad significativa de tiempo de capacitación para que los maestros tengan una comprensión más profunda de cómo enseñar a leer y la ciencia que lo sustenta. 

 

La Junta Directiva Escolar del Condado Wake ha aprobado seis días de salida temprana durante el año escolar 2022-2023 para brindar este tiempo de capacitación. Por lo tanto, trabajaremos con nuestros socios comunitarios para garantizar que las opciones de cuidado después de la escuela estén disponibles para aquellos que puedan necesitarlo.

 

Hemos investigado muchos escenarios diferentes que permitirían a los maestros el tiempo necesario para completar esta capacitación requerida por parte del estado sin tener que usar su tiempo personal, como las noches y los fines de semana. Además, la ley estatal exige fechas específicas de inicio y finalización para los años escolares, lo que restringe aún más nuestras opciones.

 

Si bien hay otras fechas designadas como días laborales, ya se han reservado para fines específicos, como cerrar un trimestre de calificaciones.

 

Las familias recibirán más información sobre el apoyo para el cuidado después de la escuela para quienes lo necesiten antes del comienzo del año escolar 2022-2023 en julio.
