Report on implementation of new curricula in ELA and Math

Data, Research and Accountability staff recently completed a study looking at the implementation of new curricula in English/Language Arts (EL Education) and Mathematics (OUR and MVP) between 2017 and 2021.
Findings included the following:
- The new curricula have been fairly well received by teachers. Most said that the curricula are of high quality, and that they give students ample opportunity to practice and develop 4C skills (creativity, communication, collaboration, and critical thinking.)
- Most teachers said they were able to implement the curriculum with fidelity, and the percentage of teachers saying they needed additional training and support on the curriculum declined over time.
- Teachers initially were not overly confident in their ability to differentiate instruction with the new curricula, but this improved over time in part due to additional resources and flexibility provided by the district.
- Teachers expressed concerns about the appropriateness of the curricula for English Learners and struggling students, especially at the middle and high school levels.
- Teachers’ perceptions of the impact of the new curricula on student achievement were mixed initially, but improved significantly over time.
Future recommendations include allowing more time for curriculum rollouts in the future, continuing to involve all stakeholders in the process, and ensuring that ample resources and professional development infrastructure are in place to support teachers in making the significant shifts required to implement with fidelity.
