Early Learning Center opens to serve pre-K students and their families
Nov. 2, 2023
The Early Learning Center at Memory Road officially opened on Thursday, with capacity to serve more than 130 preschool students.
This is our district's first standalone pre-K center. The student population includes both special education and Title I students.
"This is an exciting day for our staff and students, and for our entire school district," says Dawn Dawson, Senior Director of the WCPSS Office of Early Learning. "This beautiful new facility will be a place where preschool children will be able to grow, learn, and transform into successful and resilient students.”
Students and staff began the school year at the district's Spring Forest Road campus while construction was completed. The center is strategically located in an area with a high concentration of preschool students who are eligible for the services provided.
WCPSS and Katherine Hogan Architects hosted focus groups to help determine key characteristics of the space. The result is a warm and welcoming space that also provides a high-quality instructional environment.
The center includes eight classrooms, a space for student evaluations, as well as an outdoor learning environment and indoor movement spaces. The center offers classroom instruction as well as related services such as speech therapy.
"The Early Learning Center is an inviting environment for families and children," says Sherry Williams, the school's director. "This is a wonderful way to introduce families to the school system so they can be an active partner in their child’s educational journey."
A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be announced at a later date.
