Yale Cites WCPSS with Distinguished Music Award
The Wake County Public School System and the North Carolina Symphony have made beautiful music together for nearly 40 years. Now, Yale University is taking notice.
The award honors the WCPSS/NCS partnership, which has provided educational concerts for more than 15,000 fourth-graders, along with professional development for teachers, since 1976. In recent years, it has added master classes, humanities-themed concerts, discussions among students, teachers and symphony musicians, open rehearsals, and private music study for students of need for grades 6 through 12.
The WCPSS/NCS partnership is looking to further expand and enhance their activities and benefits to students. Martin Middle Magnet School music teacher Anita Hynus will attend the Yale Symposium with an NCS representative to study how that could happen.
A partnership between WCPSS and NCS has received a Yale Distinguished Music Award, and as a result a teacher and Symphony member will participate in the Yale School of Music Symposium on Music in Schools in June.

Thirty-nine such partnerships from across the country received this award. Participants include the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Cliburn Competition, and the National Symphony Orchestra, with partner school districts.
