Proposed Grandfathering Rules - Draft 2

Grandfathering give students the option of staying at the school they are currently at, but without district transportation.
  • Grandfathering gives certain students the option of staying at the school they currently attend even if their assignment changes. The following provisions are being proposed under Draft 2 of the Student Enrollment Proposal:

Proposed Elementary and Middle School Grandfathering Rules

    • Students rising to grades 5 and 8 who are affected by this proposal are eligible to grandfather at their current school. Their siblings will be eligible to grandfather for one year.
    • After one year, siblings will be assigned back to their new base school.
    • Grandfather requests can be made through the Request for Transfer application period, Feb. 20-March 6.
    • Grandfathered students are considered “transfer students” and, as such, do not receive district transportation.
    • The changes are being proposed because to prevent school crowding and to meet state-mandated class-size reduction for grades K-3.

High School Students (existing school to an existing school)

    • Students whose assignments are proposed to change from an existing school to an existing school are eligible to grandfather at their current assignment.
    • Their siblings rising to grade 9 are also eligible to grandfather for as long as the older sibling attends the high school.
    • Grandfather requests can be made through the Request for Transfer application period, Feb. 20-March 6.
    • Grandfathered students are considered “transfer students” and as such, do not receive district transportation.

High School Students (assigned to South Garner High School)

    • Students rising to grades 11 and 12 living in the base attendance area of South Garner High cannot attend South Garner High, because it is opening for grades 9 and 10 only.
    • They will remain at their current high school and continue to receive their current level of transportation.
    • Their siblings rising to grades 9 and 10 are eligible to grandfather to their sibling’s current high school.
    • They will receive transportation for as long as their older sibling attends that school.
