Ms. Emily Lagas-Rivera

My name is Emily Lagas-Rivera. I am originally from Hillsborough, North Carolina and I am returning to the Triangle after living in Southport, North Carolina for the past sixteen years. I am a graduate of Appalachian State University and have worked in education for over 20 years. I started as a Title I Reading Assistant in Buncombe County and moved on to teaching positions in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades in New Hanover and Brunswick counties. I am licensed in Elementary Education K-6, Academically or Intellectually Gifted K-12, and Curriculum Instructional Specialist. I am excited to be the Intervention/AIG teacher at MECME. My goal as a teacher is to help all students develop a love of learning.

When I’m not teaching, I enjoy spending time with my husband, Matthew, and our son, Simon. Traveling, hiking, watching movies, and cooking are a few of the things we enjoy as a family.

Why I teach...

I teach because I enjoy helping others. I hope I can help my students not only learn the required standards but to also learn how to be independent learners who give back to their community.
