• Middle School eligibility 

    Students in 7th and 8th grade can join athletics programs throughout the school year. This page explains the eligibility rules and the sports offered each season.

  • Eligibility requirements

    To participate in middle school athletics, a student must meet all of these requirements prior to beginning any activity:

    1. Enrollment

      • Be enrolled in 7th or 8th grade.

    2. Age

      • Be under 15 years old as of August 31 of the school year.

    3. Health and safety

      • Complete a medical examination by a licensed health professional every 395 days.

      • Read the Concussion Information Sheet and sign the Student-Athlete & Parent Concussion Statement each year.

    4. Academics

      • Pass at least 70% of courses in the previous semester.

      • Meet promotion requirements set forth by the State Board of Education. Students retained in their current grade are not eligible in the fall.

      • Attend at least 85% of school days in the previous semester based on the instructional calendar.

    5. Participation limits

      • Be eligible for no more than six consecutive semesters starting with entry into 6th grade.

    6. Behavior

      • Not participate if suspended or currently serving in-school suspension on the day of the activity.

      • Be present in school the full day to attend practices or games.

    7. Residency

      • Live with a parent or legal custodian within the Wake County Public School System area. Notify the athletic director if this is not the case.

    8. Practice requirements

      • Complete at least six practices before competing (eight for football).

      • If absent for five or more days due to illness or injury, provide a doctor’s note before returning to practice. Football players must also complete three additional practices after the release.

    9. Additional rules

      • No practices or games are held on Saturdays, holidays, vacation days, or when school is closed or dismissed early.
