Information regarding the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

Feb. 17, 2025

In March and April, randomly selected middle and high school students will be participating in the statewide Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). This anonymous survey will provide invaluable information that will help our community better understand and meet the needs of our students.

Survey Process

As in past years, most middle and high schools will have random classrooms selected from second period classes to participate. WCPSS is collaborating with the N.C. Department of Public Instruction and ICF International to administer the survey.

The process for this survey will adhere to all district, state, and federal guidelines for protected information surveys. Specifically:

  • At least 10 days before the administration of the survey, parents and eligible students included in the sample will be provided with a consent form, which will contain the process for providing consent to participate in the survey and a link or QR code where they can see the full text of the survey. Families who need to access a paper copy of the survey to review can do so at their child’s school.
  • Students in the sampled classrooms will be given a permission form that must be returned if they want to opt out of the survey. Students who do not return a permission form specifically opting them out from the survey will be given the opportunity to participate.
