• Exploring Calendar Changes to Meet Growth and Capacity Needs

Our district is evaluating ways to balance enrollment across schools to ensure all students have access to high-quality learning environments. The capacity at some of our multi-track year-round schools is underutilized, while some traditional-calendar schools are experiencing significant overcrowding due to growth.

To address school crowding and growth, we have implemented measures such as 'capping' enrollment and reassigning students to less crowded schools. While these strategies provide temporary relief, they also create uncertainty for families and place additional strain on our transportation system. At the same time, some multi-track year-round schools are not full, leading to underutilized facilities.

Recognizing the need for a more sustainable, long-term solution that balances school capacity while minimizing disruptions for families, we are exploring adjustments to school calendars. One approach is to convert multi-track year-round schools that are not full to a traditional calendar, and adjust some overcrowded traditional schools to a multi-track year-round model to create additional capacity.

In addition, recent feedback from families in our district indicates that changing the calendar of a school may be preferable to being reassigned to a different school. Review the frequently asked questions from the virtual information sessions.

Proposed calendar conversions for the 2027-28 school year

On June 10, staff recommended the Board convert Oakview Elementary to a multi-track year-round calendar for the 2027-2028 school year. Staff also recommended converting Pleasant Union Elementary and North Forest Pines Elementary to a traditional calendar for the 2027-2028 school year. Watch the presentation on YouTube.
