REMINDERS & UPDATES
IMPORTANT ATHLETICS UPDATE
Bag Policy for Athletic Events Effective September 22, 2023 – more info here
The safety, security, and well-being of everyone within the Sanderson community, as well as guests and visitors to the school, remains a top priority to school officials. The intent of this new bag policy for ALL Sanderson High School athletic events, as well as other individually identified school events during the course of the year, is to promote a safe environment by enhancing security. It emerged from the school’s continuous evaluation of its security protocols and procedures, in collaboration with the WCPSS’s Security Department, the Raleigh Police Department, and the Wake County Sheriff’s Office.
Sanderson High School requests attendees bring NO bag into an athletic event on our campus. The following items will be permitted, but permitted items are subject to inspection before entry will be allowed.
PERMITTED ITEMS
- One clear bag no larger than 12’’ x 15’’ x 3’’
- Clutch bag or wristlet no larger than 6’’ x 8’’ x 1’’
- Bags containing medically necessary items for that attendee’s assistance (e.g., an oxygen tank)
- Diaper bags
NC GOVERNOR’S SCHOOL
The Governor’s School of North Carolina is the oldest statewide summer residential program for gifted and talented high school students in the nation. Each summer, selected students are invited to Governor’s School to help build a learning community during a four-week residential session. The deadline for application and recommendations is November 7.
NC State Fair
If you are going to the NC State Fair in October, you can purchase tickets in advance by going to bitly.ws/UPRF and enter the code 552. Sanderson receives $2 for each adult ticket, and $1 for each youth ticket purchased. Purchasing through this link does not cost you any extra money but helps our school!
HOMECOMING TAILGATE
Join Sanderson families, friends, and alumni at the SHS Foundation’s annual Homecoming BBQ Tailgate on Oct. 6 for great food, live music and fabulous prizes before kickoff. Purchase your plate (pork, chicken or veggie burger) and raffle tickets HERE. For sponsorship information, email contact@SHSFoundation.org.
SEL Behavior Universal Screener
We have been fortunate to be among schools chosen to participate in the district’s Social, Emotional (SEL) Behavior Universal Screener.
We’ll be using the Behavior Intervention Monitoring Assessment System-2. This research-based screening tool will help identify students who are at risk of future academic, behavioral, or emotional difficulties. Just like some students benefit from additional academic support and interventions, we know some students would benefit from additional support to strengthen their behavioral, social, and emotional skills.
September 26, 2023 - Teachers distribute letters and opt-out forms to go home with students
October 6th, 2023 - Deadline for students to return opt-out forms.
October 6th - November 7th - Screening window.
SOS Signs of Suicide Prevention Program (SOS)
SOS lessons will be offered in Freshman Healthful Living classes on the following dates: Wednesday, October 11th, Wednesday, October 25th and Thursday October 26th.
Our goals in participating in this program are straightforward:
- To help our students understand that depression is a treatable illness
- To explain that suicide is a preventable tragedy that often occurs as a result of untreated depression
- To provide students training in how to identify serious depression and potential suicidality in themselves or a friend
- To impress upon youth that they can help themselves or a friend by taking the simple step of talking to a responsible adult about their concerns
- To help students know whom in the school they can turn to for help, if they need it
The goal is to educate your child and to give them guidance on how to get help for themselves or a friend. The program has several skits that illustrate real life situations that middle or high school students may experience. The skits show the students how to correctly and safely deal with each scenario. You know your child best and if your child is sensitive to this topic, please contact your child's counselor.
You may opt your child out of the presentation by returning the signed SOS letter.
