Student Walk-Out
As young adults, our students have varying opinions and thoughts about violence in schools and society. To show solidarity and unity, one of our seniors coordinated a peaceful walk-out last Thursday for the lives lost at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. This walk-out was coordinated at the same time but was not affiliated with Students Demand Action. Staff did not participate or organize the event, but in order to ensure student safety, we directed students to the stadium and supervised the protest. During the walk-out, students shared reflections and other thoughts related to the shooting at Robb Elementary School and other schools. Students who did not participate remained in class where instruction continued. Students returned to class at approximately 12:50 pm. The rest of the day continued without disruption.

Security Checks
In light of the recent tragedy at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, the North Carolina Department of Public Safety has directed various law enforcement agencies statewide to conduct security checks at all schools across the State of North Carolina. Please know that law enforcement officers, beyond those local jurisdictional officers, will be checking in on our campus. This includes but is not limited to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, State Capital Police, Alcohol Law Enforcement Division, Community Corrections, and Special Operations and Intelligence Units. These officers will be both in plain clothes, uniforms, marked and unmarked vehicles, and most, if not all, will be armed.
Reflective Thoughts
To keep GLHS as safe as possible, we need to stand united by:
- not providing building access to strangers
- reporting strangers on campus
- reporting threats to school safety made by students or community members
- communicating any personal safety concerns to school administrators
- seeking support from Student Services for emotional needs or concerns
