Karen Summers, Principal
My husband and I relocated from Athens, Georgia to Raleigh in 1997. After starting my career as a special education teacher, I was fortunate to land my first administrative position in Wake County Public School System as a Senior Administrator in Special Education Services. For the last 20+ years, I have enjoyed a progressive succession of administrative roles in central office and in schools. My first principalship was at Davis Drive Middle School in 2009, and I transitioned to Green Hope High School in 2014. I am proud to have lived in the attendance area for Green Level High School for the past 15+ years. Our two daughters attended Highcroft Elementary, Mills Park Elementary, Davis Drive Middle, and Green Hope High. One of the highlights of my career was handing them their high school diplomas in 2017. And now, I have the great pleasure of leading as principal of Green Level High School!

As a native North Carolinian, I am a proud product of the Wake County Public School System. Prior to embarking on my administrative career, I taught academic, honors, and AP English to students in 9th through 12th grade at Green Hope High School. While teaching, I also served in a variety of roles that enabled me to interact with a diverse range of students. Whereas many people in the area have sworn allegiances to one of the Tobacco Road schools, I am admittedly a bit of an anomaly, as a proud alumnus of both NC State University (B.A., English & Secondary Education; M.Ed., Curriculum & Instruction) and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (Master of School Administration). I am also currently pursuing my doctorate in Leadership & Learning in Organizations.

Prior to becoming a Green Level Gator, I have spent 13 years in education as a teacher, literacy coach, and administrator. After receiving my undergraduate degree in Education from UNCG, I began teaching English Language Arts in High Point, NC. Later, I returned to UNCG to complete my Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction and worked alongside teachers as a Literacy Coach with Orange County Schools. After some time, I was accepted into the Principal Fellows Program and received my Master's Degree in School Administration through UNC (Go Tar Heels!) and worked as an Assistant Principal of Instruction with Alamance-Burlington School System. My partner, Adham, and I have a toddler son who never stops running and a dog named Auggie. We have recently built our home and cannot wait to become a true part of the Green Level community. My leading passion is creating a safe, trusting space for students to explore and become their very best. My biggest goal is to ensure each individual student has the opportunity to find the best path for them and offer support as they cross the graduation stage and prepare for the next adventure!

Hello, Green Level families! I am honored to be a part of the Green Level administrative team! I continue to be excited about the opportunity to help cultivate an inclusive, socially and academically-stimulating school environment -- together! My journey to Green Level started in New York, where I was raised near Buffalo. Shortly after graduating from Cortland State University, I moved south, earned my Master’s degree from NC State University (Go Pack!), and made my home in Raleigh. I have spent the last 25+ years with WCPSS in a variety of teaching and administrative roles at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. I have walked beside parents in elementary school as they smiled for pictures on their child’s first day of school, guided students and parents through the “middle” school years, and now, I have the opportunity to help Green Level families navigate “their path” as they explore the next steps of their educational journey. My wife and I have two children, one who is a WCPSS graduate and a second who is a student at Green Level. Both of our children frequently surprise and inspire me as an educator. Outside of school, we can usually be found cheering from the sidelines as we support our children in a variety of sports.

I moved to Apex, NC when I was five years old, and I can still remember when there were only two caution lights. After graduating from high school, I spent numerous years in the military in various cities along the east coast. While serving in Wilmington, NC, I met my wife, Jamie. After our first child was born, we decided to move back to Wake County to raise our family. Our family has grown over the years, and Jamie and I now have three sons - Cooper, Tyler, and Tucker. I began teaching and coaching in 2010 and later I transitioned to a support position outside the classroom as an Instructional Management Coordinator for Career and Technical Education. I had the pleasure of joining the Green Level Gator family in this role as we opened our doors our inaugural school year. I graduated from Western Carolina University in 2020 with a Master's in School Administration, and I am incredibly excited to continue supporting the students, families, and educators at Green Level High School!

Born and raised in Pennsylvania, I relocated to North Carolina shortly after graduating from the University of Pittsburgh (Hail to Pitt!) to begin my career in education. As a Teach for America corps member, my first teaching assignment was at Conway Middle School in Northampton County as a cross-categorical Special Education teacher. My wife and I moved to Wake County in 2016, where I have since taught at Green Hope High School and Hortons Creek Elementary School. Throughout my teaching career, I also served as Special Education department chair and coached wrestling, football, basketball, and baseball. I later earned my Master of School Administration degree from UNC-Chapel Hill (Go Heels!) as a North Carolina Principal Fellow. Outside of school, you can find me spending time outdoors, watching sports, or hanging out with my dog, Oli, and cat, Meeko. Go Gators!

I have spent my entire life in Wake County, so I'm thrilled to be joining the team at Green Level High School. I attended Garner Senior High School and went on to get my bachelor's and Master's in International Relations from Appalachian State University (Go Mountaineers!). After graduating in 2009, I took a job teaching English as a Second Language in South Korea. Even though I was only supposed to stay for six months, I fell in love with teaching and stayed until 2013. After I returned to the United States, I earned by Lateral Entry certification from North Carolina State University and was lucky enough to teach Social Studies at the Middle School I attended (Fuquay-Varina Middle School). I am currently enrolled in the North Carolina Principal Preparation program at NC State and will be graduating in the Spring of 2022. I am excited to be joining the Gator Family and to provide students and families with whatever they need to have a successful year!
