Principal's Message

  • 9/18/20

    Dear Reedy Creek Families,

It's been an eventful week with hearing the news at the School Board meeting and the Governor about the possiblity of our students being able to come back to school sometime next month.  In the Governor's briefing yesterday, he said students in NC could go back to school on Plan A in Grades K-5.  However, this does not mean that this is the decision our district will decide on.  There's the possibilty that our students may be coming back on Plan B with a target date of October 26th and that Plan B students would come in on rotations.  We will have to wait and see what WCPSS decides on and what the Board approves in an upcoming meeting.  If you signed up for Fall or yearlong Virtual Academy for your student, your child is committed to staying in Virtual Academy until January (Fall) and through the end of the year for yearlong Virtual Academy options. Our teacher assignments and class sizes were based on this information. We will have teachers that will remain teaching virtual classrooms for parents who chose that option.

Positivity Project is off to a great start this week and the kids were excited about it!  This is a reminder that we invite you to join a virtual conversation about two important features of RCES/our school:  Family Engagement and the Positivity Project.  Our Student Services Team-Counselors, Social Worker, and Psychologist will give you lots of great ideas of how to access these resources online at home to reinforce what your child is learning on the character strengths. Please attend on Thursday, September 24th at 6:30pm to learn more about how we can work together to support student achievement through these powerful partnerships.  Time will be provided to learn, to ask questions and to offer feedback. It should last about 45 minutes.  Meeting Link will be posted on the school website on the night of the 24th at 6:10pm at the top of our page.  We look forward to having parents join us in this virtual presentation.

We have a Teacher Workday scheduled on Monday, September 28th. There will be no school that day for students. Thanks again for your continued support.  We also thank you for supporting your child in completing IStation assessments as I referenced last week in my parent message. Upon completion of the assessment, the student then has access to the program.  This is a valuable tool to support your child's learning in Reading, especially when we need to pinpoint gaps in learning to fill them.   If your child has not completed the assessment, please do so by the deadline of September 29th.  A report will be emailed to you at a later date detailing your child's results.  Again, this is not for a grade, but for an indicator of their reading skills to support their areas of need.  We appreciate your assistance on this effort.  Thank You!

    Sincerely,

    Catherine Yanello, Principal

Ms. Yanello's Update, week of September 8th

    Dear Reedy Creek Families,

Monday marks our 20th day at school!  Thanks for your patience as many of you have had to wait to receive your devices from the district.  Hopefully by now, most of the students have a working device, but if not, there are two additional days next week to pickup a device on Wednesday, September 16th or Friday, September 18th from 11am to 6pm at Enloe High School, Knightdale High School, or Apex High School.  However, you must receive an invitation from WCPSS in order to pick up a device.

We are getting into more academic content now that we're heading into week 5 of school, so please reinforce your student's attendance according to our schedule beginning at 9:00 with live instruction dispersed throughout the day until 3:00.  Teachers are now giving assessments in class and will be sending home interim reports the week of September 28th.   Also, WCPSS has an important letter for parents to read regarding reading assessments in Grades K-5 in all schools.  Please click on this link and read the Istation Document.  This  will take you to the memo to give you information and guidance of this assessment. All students are expected to be assessed on this platform monthly, including a mid & end of year benchmark.  This is important information for teachers to guide them in their instruction and for them to know what to focus on with individual students.  It is an adaptive measure and meets students where they are and adjusts to their own reading ability (as Dreambox does in Math). Therefore, it's important that students do the assessment on their own for teachers to have a valid measure for each student. Please do not worry about this assessment.  Students aren't given grades according to these. Instead it's an indicator to measure students' reading skills for instructional purposes.

We begin Positivity Project on Monday with our students. If your student has attended our school, we are beginning our fourth year  of Positivity Project (or P2).  We now have a way to incorporate P2 virtually and it's a great way for students to start off their day.  P2 wil bring something familiar and is a constant at school for our students who have been participating in the lessons for the last few years.  Teachers will be recognizing individual students demonstrating the character strength of the week on Fridays.  I know the students will be excited for this incentive!

We look forward to another great week. I hope your child is starting to settle into the routines of virtual learning.  Please know that we're all committed to make sure students are doing the best they can and are actively engaged and participating in the Google Classrooms.  I can't thank you enough for your support in this endeavor!  You are so important and valuable in your child's success as we partner together this school year.

    Sincerely,

    Catherine Yanello, Principal

    Third Week was a success!

    Dear Reedy Creek Families,

We successfully finished our first official week with our new academic schedule.  Teachers were happy and excited about getting to do some teaching in the content areas. They are reminding students of the expectations for our school schedule with class beginning at 9:00 each day and ending at 3:00.  Teachers have office hours from 3-3:45.  The midday break is now shortened to an hour and a half.  Students are attending classes very well in the morning, however we're encouraging students that they need to come back for their afternoon classes.  Our live instruction is already diminshed from the regular school day so we want to make sure students get as much live teaching as possible to learn new material.

Most all of our families have picked up their student's  materials. Students began using these in lessons this week and will continue to do so.  If you haven't picked up your student's materials up, please call the office and arrange a time as soon as possible.  We'll also have another materials distribution when the next batch of supplies comes to us from the district.  It will include items to help your child with remote learning.  We will set dates when we get the shipments.

We recently found out that the USDA approved serving lunches for all students at no charge through December.  Our closest food distribution sites are Cary Elementary and West Cary Middle School. You can pick up lunch without the student's ID.

We have a virtual parent session planned on Thursday night, September 24th from 6:30-7:30pm that we hope you can attend.  I will do a brief overview of our Family Engagement policy and how that will look during this unique school year.  This will be followed up for the remainder of the time with our Student Services Team: Counselors, Social Worker, and School Pyschologist to introduce you to The Positivity Project.  This is year three of Positivity Project implementation at our school where we teach students about character strengths, such as perseverance, bravery, integrity, kindness, etc. and how to nurture these in themselves and others.  We recognize students for displaying character strengths in many ways.  Overall, each morning our students have a Positivity Project lesson that focuses on the character strength of the week.  Students, staff, and parents have enjoyed this over the last few years and we're happy to continue it in a remote learning fashion.  Our Student Services team has recommendations from the Positivity Project for easy resources and videos available to parents to use at home to implement the character strength of the week etc.   We know during this time it's especially important to address students' social emotional needs and this would be one way to do so.  You will really be glad you attended, so please mark your calendars!

I hope all of you enjoy your Labor Day Weekend!  Monday is a holiday and we look forward to starting our online classes back on Tuesday, September 8th.

    Sincerely,

    Catherine Yanello, Principal
