Welcome to Kindergarten, where your child will have a year of exploring and learning. Your child will participate in reading, writing, science, and social studies. Even in kindergarten, the importance of communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking is instilled in students through daily classwork and project based learning.
In math, your child will learn to understand the relationships between numbers and quantities, counting quantities with groups of 5 and 10, composing and decomposing numbers to 20, Shapes (2D and 3D shapes), positional words, addition and subtraction up to 10, and describing attributes of objects.
In reading, your child will begin the year learning all the letters and sounds through our phonics program, called Letterland. They will then begin to apply their knowledge of letters and sounds to read and write. Not only will your child become a fluent reader, he/she will also be able to retell a story. They will be able to restate what happened in the beginning, middle, and end of their book. Your child will also be able to answer questions orally on their level text and may even be able to answer some written comprehension questions.
In writing, your child will love to spell out words using their knowledge of letter sounds. They will also compose three writing pieces using the conventions of writing. The three writing pieces include: opinion, informational, and narrative writing.
In science, your child will explore four units of study which include, “Animals Two by Two”, “Weather”, "Forces and Motion," and “Investigating Properties”. In Social Studies, your child will explore four units of study which include, “I am a Citizen”, “We have Needs and Wants”, “We are Alike, We are Different” and “What’s Around Me.
