WHS Department Student Grade Improvement Policies Spring 2020

During the time of remote learning, teachers and staff at Wakefield High School have sought to mitigate learning loss and provide additional opportunities for students to increase mastery of essential standards and improve grades for each course.

Our departments have sought to design appropriate avenues for students to improve their growth during this time in ways that allow for student growth and increased mastery of content and skills. Allowing for department decisions balances consistency with a recognition of the needs of each discipline. These avenues were also designed to reflect our approach to feedback and the challenges our students have faced during this time.

Wakefield High School is offering the following options as an avenue to student grade improvement in this order:

    1. Turning in missing work for Quarter 3 assigned prior to March 13.
    • PLTs may substitute alternate assignments for work that is not appropriate for completion during remote learning.
    1. Retesting / re-assessment of material prior to March 13.
    • Regular department/PLT retesting policies apply.
    1. Proficiency/mastery with new material presented during remote learning.
    • Students will be given the opportunity to complete minor assignments as determined by PLTs. These
    • These assignments will be graded for accuracy.
    • Students interested in improving their grades should contact the course teacher. These assignments will only count towards the grade if they improve the numeric average.

All assignments for grade improvement are due to the teacher no later than 2:00 PM on Thursday, June 4th. Students and parents are encouraged to submit grade decision forms by Monday, June 8th.

  • May 15, 2020 Senior Graduation Update

Posted by Emily Scales on 5/15/2020

    Graduation Update From WCPSS

Earlier this morning, Superintendent Moore and Board Chair Sutton shared with the community that we will be doing multiple things to celebrate our seniors.  The first part of our plan is to celebrate our seniors with a virtual graduation program.  Another part of our plan is to have a celebration at each school that will honor our seniors, provide for a celebratory distribution of diplomas, etc.  Finally, the district has not ruled out a further celebration as a larger group in the summer or fall but that will depend on changes in state and local social distancing guidelines.

    Senior Portal

As a part of the virtual graduation, each student will have a slide that shows their senior portrait, has their name, and shares if they are an honor graduate and/or a NC Scholar.  Students will have a brief opportunity to review their slide and suggest updates and to verify content.  On May 18, students will receive an email to their WCPSS email account giving them access to an online portal to review their information.  Specifically,

      • We will be using your senior portrait.  If you choose to use another photo, you will need to log into the portal to make that change.
      • If you prefer not to have your photo / name used in the slideshow, please let your principal know.
      • The portal will open on May 20 at 8am and close on May 21 at 6pm.  You will receive an email closer to the 20th with more information.

    Name Pronunciation

Students that are concerned about how their name will be pronounced may submit to the form below to clarify how we say their name OR may attend a Google Meet with Ms. Gordon to share how to say their name for Graduation.

    Wakefield High School Graduation Plans

    Virtual Graduation

WCPSS has chosen for all graduations this year to be virtual rather than live to keep everyone in our community safe. To ensure that all our Seniors are given the chance to celebrate this huge accomplishment in their lives, we will be having a 2-part graduation celebration. We will have our virtual graduation ceremony on Wednesday, June 10th at 10am as previously scheduled. This will be a traditional ceremony including student speakers, an address from Mr. Bazzell, and every Senior graduating from Wakefield High School having their name called and recognized. WCPSS is asking for each Senior to submit a photo of them in their cap and gown to be used. The link to this ceremony will be sent out closer to the day of graduation. During the ceremony we would love to have seniors share their Turning of the Tassel with Wakefield on social media by tagging @wakefieldhs on twitter and @wakefieldhighschool on instagram and include the #TurntheTassel2020WHS

    Graduation Parade:

Part 2 of our Wakefield Graduation celebration is a Graduation Parade on Saturday, June 6th starting at 11am on Wakefield’s campus. Students will be asked to arrive on campus through the bus parking lot entrance off of Falls of the Neuse Rd., then enter the student parking lot, following the path indicated in the map attached in order to turn into the driveway and through the circle in front of the school in order to receive your diploma, diploma cover, and more from Mr. Bazzell. We encourage students to arrive in their caps and gowns! We will document each senior receiving their diploma in the moment! We ask that graduating seniors be passengers in the front seat and not drive themselves. We will provide a stage with backdrop for Seniors and their families to stop and take pictures with as well. More details on this event will be provided closer to the day of the Senior Graduation Parade! This will give all the Seniors an opportunity to say goodbye to the Faculty and Wakefield High School itself in front of their family and friends. We are very proud of our Senior class and look forward to celebrating this once in a lifetime achievement with you in June!

    Senior Distribution Day

    School Closure

Governor Cooper announced today that all public-school buildings will remain closed for the rest of the school year. In keeping with this order, all WCPSS school buildings will remain closed for the remainder of this school year for in-person instruction. Students and staff will continue with remote learning and teleworking for the remainder of the school year.

    Seniors and Parents:

    Graduation

Students and parents: At this time, we do not know whether we will be able to hold traditional graduation ceremonies, though we by no means have given up hope.  We have discussed many different dates and ways to celebrate, but ultimately, the guidance of health officials will drive our decisions. Our school district leaders have promised that if we are not able to gather as normal, we will find a way to make sure seniors are honored appropriately for their years of hard work.

    School Playgrounds and Athletic Fields

Reminder: due to local and state directives, all school facilities including all playgrounds and athletic fields are closed. For the safety of our community, we ask that your family please adhere to the guidelines.

    Update on Grading Policy

The State Board of Education approved an updated Statewide Grading Policy for K-11 students due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Guidance outlined by the new policy provides that:

    • Seniors will continue to be graded as Pass/Withdrawal.
    • Grades 9 through 11-  will be given a choice for how they are graded on both year-long and semester courses currently in progress: A numeric grade for the course, the highest grade representing learning as of March 13 or as improved through the semester or, Pass/Withdrawal.

The NC Department of Public Instruction will be providing additional information on grading in the next 7-10 days. Once that information is received, we will provide more details on how grades will be handled in Wake County, in alignment with the new state-wide policy.  Meanwhile, we hope that this new policy will ultimately benefit all students regardless of their circumstances.
