WCPSS has implemented a Visitor Management System at all schools in the district. The system will be used for visitors, signing in late students, signing students out early, volunteer sign in and more.

When coming to FWES....BRING A PHOTO ID ALWAYS

    1. Photo ID will always be required at the front entrance to enter the building for any of the needs listed above- late arrival, visitors, sign out students, volunteer, etc.

    Once inside the office....

    1. Photo ID will be required to sign in as a visitor for lunch or conference. ALL adult visitors are required to sign in using a photo ID to receive a visitor badge to wear while on campus.
    2. Photo ID will be required to sign out a student from school and must match an authorized individual who can pick up the student.

    Late Arrival to School:

Please make sure your child arrives on time each day. We will be using the one kiosk in our office to sign in late students and it can take time if there is a line of people. We want all students to begin their day learning at our 9:15am start time and need your assistance!

    Yours,

    Winston Pierce, Principal

Tuyo, Winston Pierce, directora

    Wednesday, August 30th

To keep students and staff safe tomorrow- WCPSS has closed all schools and cancelled all school activities.

If your last name begins with S-Z- it means your child will not be able to participate in their Kindergarten Staggered Entry Day. Kindergarten Staggered Entry Day for students with last names S-Z on Thursday, August 31st is cancelled and will not be rescheduled. We are very disappointed as a school and know your child and your family are also disappointed.

Our school's schedule for Friday should remain the same for ALL kindergarten students- unless there are any additional district schedule changes.

All of our kindergarten students will be assigned to classrooms on Friday morning and the class rosters with teacher names assigned will be posted at the front doors of the school at 12:45pm on Friday, September 1st.

ALL KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS AND FAMILIES should plan to attend the Kindergarten Meet the Teacher Event on Friday, September 1st from 1:00-2:00pm AT Farmington Woods. Families are encouraged to bring students' school supplies when you come to school to avoid so much to carry on the 1st day- Tuesday, September 5th.

We hope you all stay safe and dry tomorrow and will look forward to seeing you ALL on Friday at 1:00pm!

The first full day of school for ALL students will be Tuesday, September 5th. Please note that on September 5th there is a Kick Off event for families after you drop off your child in the Inquiry Center and a PTA Coffee chat following the Kick Off event on the school’s front porch!

    With Love,

    FWES Kindergarten Team

Mrs. Pierce, Mr. Beamish and Mrs. Sweeney

    Espanol

    Mrs. Pierce's Video Message

    Happy 1st Day!

We had a great day at FWES today. I saw students, returning and new, smiling and having fun with friends in every classroom. What a great community of IB learners we have:)

These first two weeks will continue to have a focus on building relationships throughout the building and will help put our theme “FWES Learning by Heart” into action for our students and our staff.

Moving forward, here are some reminders to our families and adults in our school community that will help us smooth out some of the bumps today. Please know we have procedures in place to keep students and staff safe and to ensure effective operations across our school community. I ask that you be patient as we settle into a new school year.

    Reminders:

    • Photo ID REQUIRED to enter FWES! Please do not come to our school without your photo ID. It is required for the office staff to unlock the door for you to enter and at the front desk to sign out a student or to move elsewhere in the building. It is a long walk back to your car if you forget.

    • Dismissal Changes: There were many glitches today with families who changed their minds about how students were to be dismissed and came to school to pick up students. With 650+ students even 10-15 changes can dramatically slow down how our dismissal procedures run each day.

      • If you have a change- please send it to the teacher in writing in the morning (note that teachers have days they cannot check email until after school- so changes should not be sent via email)- changes will not be taken over the phone for the safety of your student.

        • Students will not be signed out in the front office after 3:15pm but if you arrive to sign them out- they can be changed to a walker and you can meet them on the porch at 3:40pm when walkers are dismissed.

      • Please be consistent in the dismissal routines for your child. It is more comforting to the student to know each day and provides the safest method to ensure student dismissal is smooth.

      • Because of the manpower it takes to complete the dismissal process each afternoon- no students will be checked out in the office after 3:15pm.

    • Buses: Buses will not always run on schedule this year due to the district driver shortage. Twitter is not always allowing us to post a feed on our website so the best way to track your child’s bus is to download the Here Comes the Bus App.

      • Buses 10 and 11 are expected to run later on a regular basis for the first several weeks of the year. Please notify your child’s teacher if you would like for your child to go home a different way.

    • Walkers: Annual permission is needed for a student in 2nd-5th grade to walk away from the front porch without a parent with them. If you missed the messaging this summer and during Open House communications, but want your student to walk away from the porch to meet you- please fill out the form linked above.

      • The form closes at noon daily so we have time to process the information and get the correct stickers and information to teachers and students.

      • Any student not given permission to walk away will be required to stay on the porch until a grown up comes to meet them- for their safety. Please come up to the porch to pick up your student- they will not be allowed to walk down the sidewalk to meet you.

      • K-1 students may only have permission to walk away from the porch if they are walking with an older sibling identified on the form above.

    • Carpoolers: All things considered, we finished carpool pick up in about 30 minutes- that’s 330+ carpool #s and pretty impressive for day 1! Your patience is required each day. If you don’t like waiting in the line- you can wait until 4:00pm to arrive and the wait is typically much less. As our students learn their new numbers and our kindergartners and other new students learn the procedures, everything will speed up.

      • Please do not leave the carpool line to come to the front office to pick up your child. I can assure you that the sign out process and calling them from the classroom will take just as long as being patient and waiting in the carpool line.

With your cooperation and understanding, our daily dismissal will become faster and smoother each day!

Thank you for your help and we look forward to a fantastic Day 2 tomorrow!

FWES School Improvement Team Member Interest: If you are interested in joining the Farmington Woods School Improvement Team as a parent representative, we would love to hear from you!

    • The school improvement team (SIT) meets monthly to monitor school wide data and make decisions to positively impact the growth of all students. See a brief overview of our School Improvement Plan (SIP) here.

    • The team is comprised of members from all teaching teams in the building, our administrators, and parents.

    • The parent representatives are appointed by a vote of the PTA general body at the first general body meeting of each school year

    • Meeting Dates (7:35am): September 26, October 9, November 21, December 12, January 30, February 20, March 7, April 18, May 2

If you are interested in joining the SIT or have any questions, please email Allison Williams (awilliams19@wcpss.net). We look forward to hearing from you!

FWES 1st Day of School Reminders

We are so very excited to start the 2023-24 school year with your students and your family!

Tomorrow is our 1st day of school for all 1st-5th Graders and Kindergarten staggered entry for those with last names A-C.

The front doors will open for building access at 8:45am. Please wait on the front porch if you arrive prior to 8:45am.

        Note:

    • Bus riders will also be dropped off so they can enter our school through the front doors of the school in 23-24. Should buses arrive prior to 8:45am, those students will enter the building early to be supervised by school staff- so the bus can return and run a 2nd bus route for FWES.

    • Safety Patrol team members should arrive between 8:35am-8:40am at the LOWER LOT by the playground and enter through the cafeteria side doors.

    • Walkers may not enter until the 8:45am bell rings and should not arrive early unless a parent will remain to provide safety and supervision.

There will be a 1st Day of School Photo Spot available for families on the front porch while you wait- so bring your camera if you are coming!

Expect traffic and waits to get into the parking areas and into the school- as the first day of school is the busiest day of the year!

Reminder we are RIGHT TURN ONLY- during arrival and dismissal- you may not enter the carpool loop or front parking lot by turning left into the school from Hampton Valley Road and you may NOT take a left turn OUT of the parking lot, carpool loop.

At FWES, family members have permission to walk to the classroom with your student each morning between 8:45am-9:15am. We welcome you into our school but ask that you respect our expectations:

    • Families who wish to walk with students must enter at the front doors only.

    • Families who walk to classrooms must exit the building (not the classroom) by 9:15am as our instructional day begins at that bell.

      • After the first 2 weeks- families will NOT be allowed to walk to classrooms if you arrive after 9:05am as it is next to impossible to get out by 9:15am if you arrive after 9:05am.

    • When you arrive at the classroom, please do not interrupt or distract the teacher. The primary responsibility of the teacher during this time is the students. If you have information to share with the teacher it should be in a written note that can be handed to the teacher with your email and phone number if follow up is needed. The arrival time is NOT a conference opportunity.

      • Important information for your child’s teacher should be given to them in writing- not in a verbal sharing during your drop off. The office has paper you can use and take to the classroom if you have forgotten to write it down at home.

    • Please allow your child to have independence by allowing them to carry their own belongings to the classroom and following the teacher directions about what to do with the belongings upon arrival.

    • Please quickly wish your child a great day and then leave the classroom so your child can start their day and you can start yours:)

    • After the 2nd week of school, families will not be allowed to walk to classrooms if you arrive after 9:05am to ensure that all visitors have exited by 9:15am each day.

We enjoy the opportunity to interact with families during arrival and appreciate your cooperation with our expectations!

Bus Riders: With the vacancies in bus driver positions, there will be adjustments in route times that may mean riders:

    • Are assigned to routes and stops different from last year (check below)

    • May be picked up earlier in the morning than last year

    • May be picked up at FWES in the afternoon significantly AFTER the typical dismissal time- up to 1 hour and possibly more

Please be patient as all routes are assigned a driver, it just means these adjustments are required to make sure all students get to school and home each day!

    Afternoon Dismissal Reminders:

    After School Families-

After school students will not be dismissed to go to the after school program until most other students in the school have completed dismissal. This means the first two weeks they are likely not to go to the cafeteria for After School until 4:30pm. Please do not come to pick up your student before 4:30pm as they will not be ready and it will require you sign them out in the office (with photo ID), while we are still dismissing many other students. Thank you for your cooperation- once we get into our routines, your child will be ready for pick up in the cafeteria by 4:15pm each afternoon.

Transportation Information- procedures with video links to show process!

    • FWES Carpool Procedures (with video link)

      • Make sure you put your child’s carpool tag on the bookbag! And practice learning the new # and recognizing your car

      • DO NOT leave the line and walk to the front with your carpool tag- students will not be dismissed to a carpool tag that is NOT in a car. Thank you for being patient the first few weeks!

      • NEVER pass other vehicles

        • No passing on Hampton Valley Road

        • No passing in the carpool line

        • DO NOT pass in the loading zone once your child is loaded if the cars in front of you are not moving

      • Carpool requires patience the first few weeks- be sure to put that in the car with you when you come to pick up your student!

    • Walker Procedures (with video link)

      • If you indicated at Open House that your child is a walker- a walker tag will be placed on the bookbag tomorrow at school.

      • Be ready outside for your student at 3:40pm! Give yourself time- there will be lots of traffic and crowds the first week!

      • Bring photo ID because if you miss Walker Dismissal, you will have to sign  your child out in the office and that will require photo ID

      • No dogs on campus- remain on the sidewalk on Hampton Valley Road if you have a dog with you.

    • Bus Rider Procedures (with video link)

All volunteers must register and complete a background check to be approved before serving in a volunteer capacity on campus and and during the school day. Only approved volunteers may be in the school building and on campus during the school day.

    • To register for approved volunteer status- use the MyVolunteer registration link on the WCPSS Volunteer site. The site can be accessed from your home or a phone. Processing of applications can take a few weeks- so please register well ahead of the time you want to volunteer.

    Mrs. Pierce's Video Message

    Happy Summer FWES Families!

We hope you are having a great summer break but are beginning to thing about returning to FWES, because it is just 5 short weeks away.

Farmington Woods Families- please review the information below that will be sent to your email address on file from WCPSS Transportation. If you can transport your child to and from school it will help to provide routine for your child and family and avoid long waits at school and home arrivals after 6pm. If you decline transportation- your child can be a walker or you can sign up for a carpool tag to pick them up in carpool between 3:45-4:10pm at the end of the day. Thank you for considering this option to assist if you can!

As you are probably aware, our transportation department continues to face a severe shortage of bus drivers.
This shortage will cause delays in service during the upcoming school year. Sometimes, no bus will be available and students will have to find alternative transportation to and from school.

Families are encouraged to provide their own transportation this school year if they are able to do so.

If you would like to provide your own transportation this school year, please visit wcpss.net/declinebus and complete the form to decline bus service as soon as possible, preferably by Friday, July 21.
