The FWES PTA raises money to support the specific needs of our school. The FWES PTA links families to important school and community information.     Important Information for 3rd Grade Families: 

    • Beginning of Grade Test Scores will be coming home with students today. Please note that the BOG is intended to assess student understanding of ALL 3rd Grade Standards, so it is not expected that all students will pass at the beginning of the year... but it also helps teachers know where there are areas of strength and need to plan instruction to meet student learning needs. 
    • The BOG is part of the NC Legislation from 2021- Read to Achieve- that requires students be proficient readers by the end of 3rd grade in order to be promoted to 4th grade. To learn more about the next steps for students who are not yet proficient readers, please join us for an information session:

    FWES Quick Updates

    Mrs. Pierce's Brief Message:)

    Dismissal: Thanks for the cooperation with dismissal, we are improving each day! 

    Lunch: Based on district guidance we adjusted overnight and have created spaces for students to eat outside for lunch- see some photos on Twitter

    Students will be much more comfortable if they have a towel to sit on- please send a towel with your student- and if you have extras thank you for sharing, too! 

    Kindergarten: Staggered entry ended today- Meet the Teacher is Tomorrow- FRIDAY, August 27th by last name. 

    1:30-2:00pm A-M

    2:00-2:30pm N-Z

    Please bring your student and their school supplies to help them be settled to start the year on Monday. 

    Rosters will be posted at the front doors of the school at 1:15pm on Friday to find your teacher's name. Please wait outside until we are able to have staff welcome you into the building. We ask that if at all possible- only the kindergartner and parent(s) attend this event. 

    If ANYONE in your family is feeling ill or showing symptoms of COVID- DO NOT COME TO MEET THE TEACHER. We will be happy to share your teacher information over the phone:) Thank you for helping us make sure we keep our students and staff healthy!

    Happy First Day!

    It was a great day at Farmington Woods- lots of happy students and staff! 

    Mrs. Pierce's Message about Today and Dismissal- please watch:) 

    Dismissal today, however, was a bit challenging- and for some of it we can use your help! 

    Bus Riders- Please be aware that there is a shortage of Bus Drivers and some drivers are having to run double routes. This situation means that it is most important that you download the Here Comes the Bus App and monitor where the bus is and make sure you are at the stop when it arrives. 

    K-1 Students cannot be dropped off unless the parent is waiting at the bus stop- so monitoring for the bus arrival is essential. 

     

    Walkers- Walkers are really meant for families who live close enough to the school that they can walk home from FWES. Many families choose to drive, park and "walk" up to meet their student. Unfortunately- with soooo many students and many more carpoolers than in the past- families are unable to get to school early enough for the walker dismissal time of 3:40pm. If this is your family- please, please consider becoming a carpool family. After we get through the start of the year- if walkers are not picked up on time, we will require those who do not arrive on time to become carpoolers. 

    If you are late to pick up a walker, they will be asked to return to their classroom. Please DO NOT go through the carpool line- please park and come to the front door with your ID to sign out your student. A reminder that your student will have to walk back to the front from their classroom, so being on time will save your time. 

    Reminder- For safety purposes dogs are not allowed on campus at any time. If you are meeting a student, please do not bring your dog with you- unless your child has permission to walk alone and will be meeting you on the sidewalk on Hampton Valley Road

     

    Carpoolers- We have half of our students who have not been in carpool since March of 2020- and the procedures have changed a bit. Today was challenging and we at the school will work more on the procedures with our carpoolers tomorrow. Make sure you have registered for a carpool tag- they are available on the porch during arrival this week and next. 

    Families can help speed up the carpool process by: 

    1. Please take time to watch the Carpool Video WITH your student to help them see and understand the procedures for afternoon carpool. We will also work on that tomorrow:) 
    2. Please work with your student to learn or to be learning their carpool # so they recognize it on the screen when it is displayed and when someone might call the number aloud when they are outside. 
    3. Please make sure your child recognizes your vehicle... that they at least know the color- and maybe a special magnet on the "carpool" side door for easy recognition (like a ribbon tied to a suitcase for the carousel at the airport). 

    We will also have to begin prohibiting parents from parking and coming up to the front door to check out students during carpool as things calm down. That process is confusing to the student and eliminates their ability to learn the process effectively. 

    Extra Carpool Tags- If you requested extra carpool tags, please bring your payment $2.00 per tag- cash only- to the school and we will be able to assist you in getting those extra tags for your student. 

    It will take a few weeks, but all of our dismissal processes will get smoother with your help and your patience is appreciated!

    Tomorrow is First Day for 1st-5th Graders

    • Teacher lists are on the front windows of the school if you did not get to come to Open House- you can ride by tonight or look in the morning- Staff at buses will also have lists to let bus riders know, too. 
    • Parents and families are not allowed to enter the building. Please be prepared to kiss your child and GO if you walk them to the front of the building. We have staff stationed throughout the school to assist as needed and all will be wearing their FWES blue shirts for easy identification.

    • Please have your child wear the bear you received at Open House so staff can recognize them as kindergartners- if you were unable to join us- please put a sticker or other indicator on your child’s shirt that helps us know they are headed to kindergarten for staggered entry.

    K-5 School Supply List for FWES 2021-22

    Reminders: 

    • All students who attend FWES must wear a mask inside daily. 
    • Please review arrival and dismissal videos with your student tonight to prepare them for the procedures in the morning and afternoon tomorrow(and for you, too). 
    • Chromebooks for returning students should come to school daily WITH the charging cord- and go home each evening. 
        • WCPSS has identified a good portion of our FWES students- and those new to WCPSS- as students who should get an updated Chromebook for the 21-22 school year. 
    • We will begin exchanging them out during our first 6 day specials rotation- so please make sure your child has both his/her Chromebook AND the power cord daily. The exchange may not happen if the cord is not with the Chromebook. Thanks! 
    • Lunch is free for all students this year, however, there may be extra items for purchase and students can use a lunch account or cash for those items that typically range in price from $.50 to $2.00. Online accounts can be set up at My School Bucks

    Art will be missing from Specials Rotation for students for a few weeks: As many of our families are aware, our Art Teacher Brandy Smith was diagnosed last last year with breast cancer and was out the last several weeks of the year for surgery and treatment. She is doing very well but had to have a follow up surgery last week that will require a few weeks of recovery time. She uses her arms and shoulders to create art and model for student, so we send her well wishes so that when she comes back, she is healthy and ready to go! She consistently urges all FWES women to get tested because early detection was a key for her! 

    Rather than having Art in the specials rotation- on Art days, students will go to the inquiry center with Mrs. Grice and Mrs. Goodrum for work with Chromebook exchange, digital lessons and to learn/be reminded of book check out procedures- this will continue until Mid-September when Mrs. Smith is scheduled to return to FWES!

    • FWES School Improvement Team Member Interest: If you are interested in joining the Farmington Woods School Improvement Team as a parent representative, we would love to hear from you! The school improvement team (SIT) meets monthly to monitor school wide data and make decisions to positively impact the growth of all students. The team is comprised of members from all teaching teams in the building, our administrators and parents.  The parent representatives are appointed by a vote of the PTA general body at the first general body meeting of each school year. If you are interested in joining the SIT or have any questions, please email Elizabeth Plotkin (eplotkin@wcpss.net). We look forward to hearing from you!

    Hello Kinder Families! 

    We look forward to having you visit our campus and meet all of our kindergarten teachers and see all of our kindergarten classrooms on Thursday afternoon during our Open House event! It is an important experience for our kindergarten students, as families will not be allowed to walk them to the classroom once school starts and they can be at least familiar with the campus.

    After Staggered Entry- you will come WITH your kindergartner to Kindergarten Meet the Teacher- Friday, August 27th to see your student's assigned teacher, the classroom, seat assignment and cubby! 

    From 1:30-2:00pm we will welcome students with last names A-M

    From 2:00-2:30pm we will welcome students with last names N-Z

    *It will be important that you arrive close to the start time for your last name so you and your student have enough time to meet the teacher and look around the room- because we will have to ask you to leave at the end of your time.

    If you have NOT yet filled out the information for your student(s)- you have until 12noon on Tuesday, August 17th to complete the form. It will not be available after then and you will have a paper version at each child's seat to complete at the Open House Event

    Much of this information is typically completed during the Open House visit, but if we can gather the information ahead of time, your student and your family can spend your visit time mostly meeting the teacher:) Some documents will require completion during Open House, but it will be minimal:) 

    Email will be collected and used for FWES and PTA communications during the school year.

    Hello to our FWES Western Area Virtual Academy Families! 

    A few reminders and information as you prepare for the start of virtual learning for the 2021-22 school year:

    • Mr. Mark Beamish, assistant principal, is the VA contact for FWES students in the Western Area Virtual Academy (that's all of you:)
      • Please contact him if you have any questions during the school year at mbeamish@wcpss.net or call 919-460-3469
        • He will do his best to answer or find an answer! 
    • If your VA student were to need support from one of our special area teachers (ESL, Intervention, Speech, etc.), the support will be provided virtually from the appropriate staff member at FWES. 
      • Families can also reach out to FWES school counselors and social worker if additional support for the student or family is needed to make the VA learning productive for the student. 
    • Welcome to Western Area Virtual Academy letter
      • Teacher assignments will be made by August 18th and teachers will email families to introduce themselves and welcome your student. In this email will be a Google Link to the teacher's Open House event.

    Bus Registration for 2021-22- If a NEW bus rider or NEW address- register by TODAY to guarantee service on the 1st Day of School! Students who are previous bus riders in the 2020-21 school year DO NOT need to register.

    We are not clear if students who had been bus riders in 2019-20 but were VA students all last year carry over as bus riders for the 2021-22 school year- so until that information is available, if your student falls in that category, you may want to go ahead and register. 

     

    Mark Your Calendars for FWES Open House- please review the information linked below carefully as there are guidelines that MUST be followed as we welcome parents and students into the building for Open House. Mark your calendar for your Open House date and your specific time for the visit- NO exceptions will be made to the times listed due to maintaining appropriate small numbers of individuals in our building. All families must exit at the end of your assigned time before the next group can be allowed to enter, so your cooperation in arriving early enough to meet your teacher is appreciated. 

    FWES Open House Events 2021- Spotlighting our FWES Family Partnerships

    Updated FWES Information and Documents: Returning to school 2021-22 documents are being updated at this time, including incorporating new directives from DHHS and WCPSS. We hope to have most documents updated and posted on the school’s website by August 2nd and appreciate your patience as we work through ever changing information and guidelines. Please check “About Our School” for updated documents and to review last year’s documents if you want to begin to gather information about systems and structures at FWES. 

    After School Registration at Farmington Woods: We are pleased to be able to offer the After School program AT Farmington Wood and staffed by FWES school staff for the 2021-22 school year.

    Enola Grice and Jessica McCullen will be co-coordinators of our after school program. 

    The tentative process (dates may change and updated info will be shared) for registration will be similar as previous years: 

    • Tuesday, August 3rd- Online Sign Up for FWES After School program opens at 9:00am. Registrations will be first come first served until the maximum number of students is reached in the program. 
    • Thursday, August 5th- Notification Day- Families notified if they have a “seat” in the program or if they have been placed on the waitlist. 
    • Tuesday, August 10th and Wednesday, August 11th- Families with a student to enroll sign up for appointment times to come to FWES to submit all required forms and pay initial enrollment fees. 
    • Friday, August 13th- If seats remain available after in person registration, families from the wait list will be notified for placement. 

    More information and copies of all required forms will be added to the website and shared with families by August 2nd, but likely before:) 

    Before School Program: The Taylor YMCA in Cary will offer before school care for students at FWES- on our campus in the mornings- for the 2021-22 school year. Before School Registration information can be found at the link above. 

    *Note that FWES nor WCPSS endorse the YMCA and are not responsible for the operation of the program on our campus. 

    WCPSS Volunteer Registration Procedures for 2021-22: Although at THIS TIME, only essential visitors are allowed in the school building when students are in attendance; we are hopeful that as the year progresses we may be able to further engage our families through volunteer opportunities to support our students. To plan for the future, we encourage all family members who are interested in potentially becoming a volunteer at Farmington Woods (or any WCPSS school) to be sure to register for Volunteer Approval. The process can take up to two weeks to be completed, so thank you for planning ahead. 

    School Supplies for 2021-22: Please review the school supplies each student will need this year, based on their grade level. Due to the current health safety guidelines, sharing of materials is not allowed, so students will need their own set of supplies and a Pencil Box or Pouch to keep them in for the classroom.

    Proposed Open House Events for 2021-22- updated 6-25-2021

    We are excited that updated guidelines will allow FWES to host in person Open House events- with limited access inside- but we are thrilled to be in person:) Please review the special guidelines and time expectations below and mark your calendar. Alpha groups will be determined by mid- July based on enrollment- to effectively limit people in the building at each time slot. Families are asked to attend ONLY with students who will be attending FWES in the 2021-22 school year. We love seeing our previous and soon to be students but we will have to wait until guidelines allow for more people inside. Thank you!

    Mrs. Pierce's Message (11 minutes)

    Happy Summer to All! 

    We DID it! A full year of learning in a pandemic because we did it together #fwesstrong. Thanks to our families for your support and to your children for always reminding us about our "why" we do the work. Whether on a screen or in person, our students kept us motivated, passionate and had us laughing throughout the year. Thanks to our incredIBle teachers and staff for contorsionist level flexibility all year with not only instructional delivery but the movement of students in and out; the changes in protocols and procedures to keep everyone safe and in general always being ready to put the needs of our students first. As we close out this year I am more proud than I have every been to be part of the FWES School Community and its focus on growing amazing IB Learners! 

    It was wonderful to get to celebrate each 5th grade individually with their respective family members this year. There are so many families who have been with their children at FWES for years and years. I thank you all for trusting our school to take good care of your children and for your unwavering support. We are going to miss our 5th graders and our families who will be joining a new school family very much! We send our best wishes with you going forward! 

    We look forward to the 2021-22 school year with lots of excitement. FWES has all but 27 students returning to Face to Face instruction and we can't wait to have a building full of learners!! What we don't know however, is what procedures will remain or be adjusted between now and then- however- we are good at adjusting and pivoting so we are ready to start making some decisions as soon as we have the information needed. Family flexibility is needed NOW- we will not have all updated information for 2021-22 until likely the beginning of August, 2021. Please know that we will share information as soon as it is avaialble. See below the information that we DO have for next year at this time. 

    While we all worked hard this year, it is honest to say that our students may have experienced some learning gaps due to the pandemic. I ask that all families make daily reading and use of Dreambox a priority this summer to ensure there are no additional losses of the skills your students gained this year. We don't want the summer slide to happen on top of the pandemic to become a roller coaster. Thank you for making it routine in your home to read daily and to complete at least one lesson on dreambox (15 minutes) a day- I can assure you we will see it when your student returns in August! 

    Summer is now here..... rest, read, relax, read, enjoy, Dreambox, have fun, see friends, Dreambox, take action and fill out the form on line, read, rest, have fun and count the weeks until you get to see us again at FWES- 10 weeks to go!

    Virtual Academy Celebration and Instructional Materials Drop Off- TOMORROW- Monday, June 7th 4:30-5:30pm

    We had to reschedule our event due to the weather- and our event Monday will be RAIN or SHINE!!!

    Note changes to procedures and locations below: 

    • Carpool Loop (Front of School)- 2nd, 3rd and 5th Grade Students to see teacher and drop off materials

     

    • Bus Loop (lower by playground)- Kinder, 1st and 4th Grade Students to see teacher and drop off materials

     

    • Instructional Materials to bring to drop off- please put in a bag for easy handing to a staff member upon arrival. Don’t forget to add library books to that bag, too, if you have not yet returned them!!
    • We have structured this event like previous materials pick up events- you will check in with a staff member and be given a Station # of where to report. At that station you will drop off your material and say Happy Summer to your teacher- if your teacher has things for you, she will give them to you. 
    • We are asking that students remain in the vehicle and we will pass items through the window or door as needed for drop off and pick up. 
    • We also ask that families and students are mindful of the traffic and monitor staff conversations so that all students and families have equitable access to teachers during their visit, too. 

    If the weather allows, please feel free to decorate your car to celebrate your FWES School spirit and for having a great VA year!!! 

    Reminder that school and instruction will continue through Thursday, June 10th:)

    6-3-2021 For Virtual Academy Families Only

    Well- the weather is really not "Demonstrating Cooperation" with us today. Our afternoon event for our VA families will be rescheduled for Monday, June 7th from 4:30-5:30pm.

    With the storm severity predicted this afternoon, the safety of our school family is our priority in rescheduling. 

    We are also going to make some adjustments in the event and more details will be included in the Friday Folder tomorrow for families- so stay tuned. 

    In the meantime....

    • If you cannot come to the event on Monday- please feel free to come by the school between 9:15am-3:30pm to drop off your students' instructional materials that must be returned between now and June 10th. 
    • If you can come Monday- please organize your materials by using a grocery bag or other disposable container that can easily be handed to a staff member during the drop off process
    • VA Teachers will have some items for students to take with them, too
    • Students will be asked to stay inside the vehicle during this process- as we have over 300 students who will be visiting and want to not block traffic on Cary Parkway:) If you have a card, note or other item for your teacher (other than your materials), please be prepared to deliver the item through the window or a quick opening of the door if at all possible. 

    We will be sending more information tomorrow with directions and maps- so be sure to be on the look out in the Friday Folder!

    6-2-2021 For Virtual Academy Families Only

    While the weather is looking iffy.... it is also looking iffy for the next week- so rescheduling our Virtual Academy event planned for tomorrow is just not a great option either. 

    We will monitor the weather conditions throughout the day and if there are dangerous conditions expected between 4:30-5:30pm, we may have to cancel the event at the last minute to maintain the safety of all involved. If we were to need to cancel, we will let you know by this same time (3:30pm) on Thursday. 

    So, cross your fingers for a break in the rain and we will look forward to seeing our Virtual Academy students tomorrow! 

    Drive through the main carpool loop at the front of the school to wave at your teacher(s) and school staff.... then turn right out of the parking lot and drive through the bus loop area to drop off your instructional materials- including any FWES Library Books- with additional school staff. 

    *Reminder we are right turn in only, so families should enter Hampton Valley Road from the Cary Parkway end only. Thank you! 

    Please don't forget that an important purpose of this event, is that all WCPSS instructional materials must be collected and organized for next year's learning- so review the link below as a reminder of the items you should plan to bring with you tomorrow. Your teachers will also remind you during the day, too.

    5-20-2021 For new Kinder Families Only

    We were so happy to meet so many of you on Tuesday afternoon at our Welcome Wave Parade! 

    Starting kindergarten is such an exciting time for students and families and for us at Farmington Woods, too! 

    Throughout the summer, schools will receive additional information to help us plan specifics for next year and as we are able to process that information it will be shared with all of our families. You can expect that most items will be updated by August 1st, but as it is updated, you will receive messaging (like this one) and you are welcome to continue to check our website for updates and information. 

    As I know you are working to plan for next year, there are just too many unknowns to begin to share details, yet... so your patience is appreciated! 

    One thing we know....

    Kindergartners will have Staggered Entry to the 2021-22 school year. Kindergarten students will attend school ONLY ONE full day the first week of the year (August 23-26, 2021)- to provide them and our kindergarten team the time to provide an orientation and get to know all students well before they all attend together. Think about this event like a high school or college orientation day to help students experience a day at FWES, meet all of our staff, get to know some new friends but in a ratio of 25 students to the 8-10 kindergarten team staff- providing strong support for the transition. Students will not yet be assigned to a teacher for Staggered Entry so we can insure the best fit and classroom dynamics for all students. Student assignments to a teacher will be available on Friday, August 27th as part of the Open House Event (see below).  

    We will share "your day" to attend by mid- June for your planning purposes. It will be one day Monday-Thursday, August 23-26, 2021. On Friday, August 27, student teacher assignments will be completed and there will be an official Kindergarten Open House from 1:30-2:30pm for students to meet their assigned kindergarten teachers and see their classroom. We are hopeful that this event will be in person with families and students in our building, but will have to wait for guidance before we can determine more details- but at least add this information to your calendar! 

    Please review the folder with all of our beautiful photos of our new kindergarten students at the link below. Your understanding that although all students photos are accessible, families should only download photos of YOUR student to maintain and protect other students.

    For VA Registered Families for 2021-22

    Video Message from Mrs. Pierce to Families who have registered for Virtual Academy for 2021-22.

    • Wednesday, May 19th is LAST day to return to Face to Face for 2021-22. 
    • There will not be any grade level with a class of only Farmington Woods Students- all grades K-5 in VA will be combined with students from other Western Area Schools to create a classroom. 
    • Students at only one grade K-5 will be taught by a Farmington Woods Teacher- all other grade levels will be taugh by a teacher from another WCPSS school.
    • Students in Virtual Academy for 2021-22 will not likely be able to access most of our IB/PYP Magnet Program such as Spanish, Mandarin, Units of Inquiry and Exhibition

    Please carefully review this information and reach out by Wednesday, May 19th to change your child's status. If you do not change your status by May 19th, the expectation is that you will remain in Virtual Academy for the entire 2021-22 school year. Although there is a possibility for a mid-year review, it has not yet been determined.

    FWES Mid Week Updates and Announcements: 

    Thank you so much to the FWES PTA for the delicious Food Truck Lunch on Cinco De Mayo from Las Gringas! 

     

    Important FWES Traffic Reminders!!!

    • Right Turn In/Out ONLY! Traffic in/out of Farmington Woods is right turn only on arrival and dismissal!!!
      • Please review the video in our Carpool Procedures document if you are new to FWES or this process
      • This procedure was developed in partnership with the Cary PD for the safety of pedestrians and drivers- cooperation is a must! 
    • Stay in the Middle of Hampton Valley Road- Don't Pull Over to the CurbCars arriving from Cary Parkway onto Hampton Valley Road (which is all cars due to right turn in only)- should NOT pull over to the curb- Hampton Valley Road is a single lane road with a double yellow line- cars MAY NOT pass other cars, so our vehicles waiting should be in the middle of the lane while waiting
      • Two lanes of traffic presents even more danger for our pedestrian traffic- of which we have a lot during arrival and dismissal and the safety of everyone it our priority.  
      • Cary PD pulled over two vehicles today for passing our carpool line and issued tickets. We can assist in making sure it does not appear that passing is OK
    • Cell Phones Not Allowed in Carpool LoopPlease remember that the safety of our students, pedestrians and staff on duty each morning and afternoon are our top priority. Drivers need to refrain from being distracted by using cell phones when driving through the carpool loop.

    Sorry for the delay- I had this message cued up to go out yesterday but with the Governor's announcement I waited for my daily evening principal email from the Superintendent to see if there were any school related updates to share- unfortunately there were no updates.

    **Several parents have reported that during arrival and dismissal, adults with students who are "walkers" are not wearing masks as required. Even if you ride a bike or stand far away from others- the current policy linked above for all WCPSS campuses requires masks when ON CAMPUS- so adult modeling of our requirements is appreciated for our students. 

    I am so proud of our school staff, students and school community, as we have followed all guidelines as written and been able to maintain a safe learning environment for our students and a safe working environment for our staff. It is because of your support with the requirements that we have been able to be successful. I continue to be hopeful that as we begin in August, that we will be much closer to where we were March 13, 2021 and your patience and cooperation is appreciated. 

    FWES Mid-Week Updates:
    We are working hard to prepare for the end of the year and have two initial documents to share with families. Please review these documents for dates and information on upcoming events in May and June. I can't believe we are only about 6 weeks from the end of the school year! We will continue to share information and updates as we move forward.

    Calendar Change: At last night's Board meeting an additional calendar change was made that may impact our Student Led Conference Schedule. We were not aware of this potential change ahead of time, so we will be working to make any adjustments required and will communicate as soon as possible. Thank you for your cooperation! 

    Virtual Academy for 2021-22: Window will open Thursday, April 22nd. Community Open House Video for more information and Frequently Asked Questions. 

    Note: FWES will not be able to provide information about how much of our IB/PYP program can be implemented in Virtual Academy next year until registration is completed and decisions about teachers and the possibility of pairing with other schools has been determined at the district level. We will not be hosting a Q&A until all of the decisions have been finalized. 

    Earth Day is Tomorrow! If you got a shirt that celebrates the beautiful earth (animals, plants, trees, earth day, etc.) we live on and want to take care of- we'd love to see that on meets and at school tomorrow! 

    In addition, FWES PTA is also encouraging sharing of Earth Day activities:

    Earth Day is April 22nd! FWES PTA wants you to show us how you and your family celebrate. Either take a picture of yourself doing something nice for Mother Earth (examples are doing a neighborhood or greenway trail litter sweep, planting a garden or flowers, begin a compost pile or compost scraps if you already have one, or anything else you can think of). You can also draw a picture of doing something nice for our planet.

    We would like to make a Google slidedeck of all the pictures, so please email them to advocacy@fwespta.org by April 26th. Thanks!

    FWES Updates:

    • Happy Assistant Principal Appreciation Week to Mark Beamish!!!
    • EOG Testing Planning- 3rd-5th Grades: 
      • Virtual Academy Families have to have the option to send students to school to take the End of Grade Tests in 3rd-5th grades. VA Families will be getting a form from  your child's teacher to ask your intent or interest in sending your child to school. 
        • VA testing will take place on regular school days- 1 day for each test administered at the grade
        • Transportation will be provided for those eligible
        • Dates cannot be determined until we know how many students are expected to come to campus to take the EOG
        • It is the family's choice. 
      • End of Grade Testing for 3rd-5th graders who are in Face to Face instruction (including those coming back April 19th) will occur May 27-June 10. As soon as final details are shared from the Department of Public Instruction a schedule will be developed. 
    • More students return to FWES: 43 Students will be returning to campus for F2F instruction on April 19th for 4th Quarter. Assignments will be made by April 13th and shared with these families. 
    • Procedural Updates:
      • Families should health screen at home and keep students who don't feel well at home. No longer will there be student health screenings before entering the building. 
        • Walkers- Families should still use the sidewalk globes to maintain social distancing. Parents should not move beyond the sidewalk. All individuals should be masked when on campus- so families and students should be wearing masks while approaching the school on the sidewalk. 
        • Carpoolers- Cars will move to the front of the school for drop off. Staff will let students out of the vehicles- please do not let your child exit unless there is an adult present- to help us maintain appropriate social distancing as students arrive. Students must be wearing masks before exiting the car and maintain social distancing when walking toward the building. 
        • Buses- Students must continue to complete attestation statement if not yet completed and wear masks while on a school bus and during arrival. Students will use the globes painted on the sidewalk to maintain appropriate social distancing when entering the school. 
      • Symptomatic Students: Symptomatic students are required to stay home and quarantine until a negative COVID test or other medical diagnosis. Students with COVID like symptoms that are allergy related will be sent home and a doctor's note will be required to return to school. Siblings of students with symptoms are no longer required to also stay at home- HOWEVER- if someone in the home is DIAGNOSED with COVID- all students must stay home for 10 days. 
      • Water Bottle Drinking Guidance: With hot weather on the way- please make sure your child has access to water during the day (remember water fountains cannot be used) with a water bottle. Students may take sips of water only after asking the teacher- so that the teacher can make sure that students are appropriately spaced for the removal of the mask. 
      • Lunch Guidance: The safest place to eat lunch is outside. With the arrival of spring weather, most classes will eat outside daily. Please send a towel for your child to sit on to eat- picnic style. While we have picnic tables in the courtyard, they do not provide the required 6 ft of distance- we can't wait to be able to use them again in the future!!
      • Lunch and Recess Reminders: With both lunch and recess being outside, famiiles are reminded that students may bring hats and apply suncreen AT HOME to provide protection from sun and heat daily. In addition, please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for spring temperatures and outdoor experiences for about an hour a day.

    Mrs. Pierce's Message

    Based on the decision made by the WCPSS BOE on March 22, 2021- FWES families have the opportunity to make an instructional placement change for the remainder of the school year. Process, deadlines and additional information is outlined below. In addition, join Mrs. Pierce on Thursday evening from 6:30-7:15pm to ask questions you may have. 

    Families wishing to make an instructional placement change should complete the form linked below to indicate the change requested. Families may move from Virtual Academy to Face to Face or Face to Face families may choose to move to Virtual Academy. All requests must be received no later than April 1, 2021.

    • If no change request is received, the student will remain in their current learning environment (Virtual Academy or Face to Face).
    • If the change request is received after the April 1st deadline, requests will be handled on an individual basis. 

    As you might expect, changes in instructional placements may require reconfiguration of classrooms and changes in teachers for all students in the school. Schedules may also need to change to accommodate larger class sizes or the possible addition of new F2F classrooms.

    Mrs. Pierce will host a Question and Answer Google Meet on Thursday, March 25 from 6:30-7:15pm to answer any questions you may have.

    Families will receive confirmation of requests and information about next steps on Tuesday, April 6, 2021. The number of requests received will guide the time needed to make appropriate adjustments to our school structures.

    Face to Face Family Message for Second Semester return January 20th

    I am looking forward to the return of students to our campus on January 20th. At this time we are preparing for the return of ALL K-5 students to daily instruction. If this changes during the Board of Education meeting on Thursday night, updated information will be shared. 

    You are receiving this message as your child is designated as a Face to Face student for 2nd Semester. Some of you are just returning to the classroom after Winter Break and Remote Learning- while for some of you, it will be the first time your child has been at FWES since March, 2020 or for kindergartners- there first time ever inside FWES. 

    The information below is very important for those new to our building but also contains important reminders for those who have been out on break.

    Thank you for taking time in the next week to review the information, read the links and especially watch the videos....all WITH YOUR STUDENT. For the safety of your child and all other children and staff, students need to be aware and reminded of the safety requirements and school procedures that are in place all day.

    3rd Grade Virtual Academy Families- Important Message with Response Needed

    Hello 2nd Semester Virtual Academy 3rd Grade Families! 

    As part of the Read to Achieve law, all 3rd grade students must demonstrate grade level proficiency in reading by the end of 3rd Grade. Please see this week's Friday folder for more detailed information about NC Read to Achieve Law. 

    Students can demonstrate proficiency in many ways throughout the school year including their iStation ISIP score or Beginning of Grade Reading Test score. Both of these assessments were offered first semester for all 3rd graders. 

    Since your student is enrolled in Virtual Academy, he/she has not yet had an opportunity to take the BOG Reading Test. WCPSS has received information from the Department of Instruction that we may now administer the BOG Reading Test to Virtual Academy students on the school campus. 

    Please use the link to the form below to indicate if you would like for your student to participate in the BOG Reading Test by coming to FWES to take the test. The score on the BOG could be used as an indicator of grade level proficiency in reading as part of Read to Achieve and serve as a good cause exemption.

    ​If your student has already met the proficiency requirement for a Good Cause Exemption due to their iStation ISIP score from the beginning of the year, an additional letter was included with this email you received from  your child's teacher. This exemption means your child has already met the Read to Achieve requirements and would not need the BOG as an exemption criterion.

    Happy New Year, 2021!!! 

    Hoping you all had a great Winter Break that was fun and healthy! We look forward to starting 2021 tomorrow with our FWES Family! 

    Please welcome Kim Fish to our Front Office as our new receptionist. She is excited to get started and will be working to support families when you call as she learns about FWES and how to help you, our students and our staff. 

    Reminder that the WCPSS Board of Education moved the entire district to Remote Learning from January 4th-15th, 2021 to end the first semester. During this time, there will be no library book pick up- but continue to reserve books for our return to school for 2nd semester. 

    The district has also recommended that all staff who can also telework during this same time period (Jan 4-15)- therefore the FWES school building will be closed. Please use email to reach out to school staff or call and leave a message so it can be returned as soon as possible. 

    The WCPSS Board of Education will discuss the transition back to campus for 2nd Semester at its work session (4:00pm) and Board Meeting (6:30pm) on Tuesday, January 5, 2021. 

    Second Semester- Begins on January 20, 2021. All students enrolled in Virtual Academy (VA) for 2nd semester will be scheduled for a materials pick up on either Wednesday, January 13th or Tuesday, January 19th. More details will be shared as they are available. 

    We are currently still working on the reconfiguration of K-5 classrooms based on the instructional decisions made by families for the Second Semester. As soon as information on the required changes has been confirmed, it will be shared with our FWES families. Information that new Face to Face families need will be shared in this week's Friday Folder on January 8th. 

    As we prepare for our IB/PYP 5 Year Evaluation Visit in April, 2021- we need your feedback! Thank you for taking a few minutes to complete the IB Family Survey

    As an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, it is a requirement that each school undertakes a formal evaluation process every five years- addressing all aspects of the Primary Years Program. During this year of evaluation, it is required that all stakeholders (parents, students, teachers, administrators) reflect on the standards and practices of our IB PYP. Farmington Woods IB/PYP is being evaluated by the IB Organization in the 2020-21 school year. The formal process will take place over several days in the Spring of 2021, but we are currently in the process of organizing data and documents to share with the visiting team. Your input is important as we work to create an effective PYP school community. 

    Attached is a series of questions that relate to important components of the IB Primary Years Program. There may be questions you don't understand or are not applicable to you individually. If you are not sure about a question, it is acceptable to mark N/A.

    Generally speaking, families can expect that students will have some learning experiences each day for which they will need to be in attendance and engaged during specific hours of the day.  Students and families should expect learning to happen Monday through Friday.  Students will receive approximately 5-6 hours of instruction and/or instructional activities per day, with at least 2-3 hours of live instruction per day, except on asynchronous remote learning days. Times may increase beyond the baseline based on teacher planning.

    Students will have flexibility to work at their own pace over the course of the day depending on family needs. Consistent daily schedules will include online instruction that will be a combination of live and recorded sessions. The schedule will also include device-free breaks and flexible times for students to meet virtually in smaller groups.

    WCPSS Health Safety Protocol Videos- In English and Spanish!!!!

    Medication Drop Off: Thank you the families who dropped of medication on Thursday and Friday. If you have medication to drop off at school- it can only be accepted between 9:30am-3:00pm due to the requirements of staff to support health screenings, arrival and dismissal processes. If you arrive during the arrival process, you will need to wait outside, social distancing in a mask until 9:30am. Thank you!

    All riders must present to the driver or complete on line- the Parent Attestation Form that provides your assurance that your child's temperature will be taken at home each morning and that he/she will not get on a bus if they are not feeling well.

    Carpool and Walker Information:

    Expect delays due to increased number of students and health screening process. Thank you for your cooperation.

    Walkers must be picked up by 3:40pm Daily

    Carpool ends at 4:05pm Daily

    Please take time to review the documents linked and watch the videos about the procedures for both processes. 

    No adults will be allowed to move beyond the screening stations set up- only students allowed on the front porch to enter the school. Please make sure your child is aware that you cannot walk with them. If your child may struggle to separate from you if you are standing beside them as a "walker", it is recommended that you consider using carpool drop off, as staff may not have contact with students to hold a hand or give a hug to help them walk to their classroom. 

    All individuals on campus must wear masks (including adults with students) and maintain 6 ft social distancing. Please be mindful of younger siblings and keep them with your family at all times. 

    Supply Lists for F2F Families: It will be important that due to Remote/Asynchronous learning days, that F2F students have supplies at school AND at home for learning. If you are able, updated supply lists are linked here for getting your child the things they need at school. Due to safety, supplies cannot be shared in the classroom so if you want to send extra supplies for teachers to have on hand for students who may forget to bring supplies or run out during the day, that's great, too. 

    **The one addition for all students K-5th is a pool/beach towel for school. We are going to try to eat outside on as many days as possible and to help students maintain social distancing and provide them a nice spot for eating, we are asking each to bring a large towel to use during the week. It will be sent home with students each Friday for washing and returning the following week. If you have an extra for students who may not bring them, thank you for sharing! 

    Technology Guidance for Families: All students returning to the FWES campus are expected to bring their WCPSS Chromebook- CHARGED- each day. It will return home with the student daily for access to homework and on remote learning days. 

    *At FWES, students without a WCPSS Chromebook checked out to them at home- will be assigned a FWES Chromebook that will be used only by that student while on campus. While the WCPSS document references, bring your own device, we have found that WCPSS systems and other resources sometimes do now work well on non-WCPSS devices- so we are not going to sponsor BYOD when students return. 

    Kindergartner Arrival and Pom Pom Pathway to your Classroom: Our kindergartners new to Face to Face instruction for the 2nd Semester will have a Pom Pom pathway to lead their way to the kindergarten classrooms.  Watch the video linked here and your child will just follow the Pom Pom pathway to get to the purple kindergarten hall to find their teacher and their classroom! We can't wait to see them! 

    Sick or Symptomatic Student Information for F2F Families: The information below can be found in the FWES Handbook but is important information for families to review and understand- as the process this year will be VERY different. 

    Students showing ANY signs or symptoms listed- MUST go home IMMEDIATELY. Please make sure you have a plan for how to pick up your child quickly if he/she is ill during the school day. School staff are not trained medical personnel and their first responsibility is to insure the safety of our school community. Students who complain of illness will be treated as if there were an illness present to keep our school safe. Your understanding and cooperation is paramount to maintaining a safe school for students and staff. 

    Update: Siblings of any student showing or complaining of symptoms are also required to go home when the student leaves campus and to follow the same 10 day guidance for remaining at home. This WCPSS updated information was shared with families in an email the week of November 6th. 

    We are experiencing a Global Pandemic and there are no exceptions, except for those listed in the information below that require medical professional documentation. Families are asked to closely monitor students each morning and keep them home if they show ANY signs of illness or not feeling well. The best news is that if a child is at home, but able to learn- we are able to connect them to a Virtual Academy classroom so they do not miss learning or assignments, until they can return to campus! 

    Classrooms of students who have been sent to the Care Center with symptoms will be quickly relocated so the room can be cleaned and sanitized- as soon as all required sanitation procedures are completed, students will return to the classroom. The Care Center will also be sanitized after each student has been picked up. 

    New for 2020-21

    All WCPSS schools will have a Care Center set up in a classroom for sick students to be supervised and socially distanced

    • Students exhibiting illness during the school day will be immediately escorted to the FWES Care Center (not the health room)
      • FWES Care Center is on the Green Hall in a room facing the Green Top
      • Family members pick up students will park in the bus lot and bring Photo ID to the back door of this classroom to sign out and pick up a sick student. Signs will indicate the location of the Care Center as you walk up the ramp from the bus log.  
    • Students exhibiting ANY contagious illness symptom or symptoms of COVID according to the DHHS guide (see below) MUST be immediately picked up from school. 
    • Students who leave school sick must remain home for 10 calendar days unless confirmation of an alternative diagnosis from a health care provider that would explain the COVID-19-like symptom(s) is provided. 

    Students who are not feeling well in the morning should not report to school. Students who do not pass health screenings will not be allowed to enter the school building. With the many safeguards in place, it is still possible that students may get sick during the school day. Students exhibiting any illness symptoms connected to COVID or other communicable illness will be immediately escorted from the classroom to the school’s Care Center. 

    Sample illness symptoms from the CDC in children under 19 years of age may include: 

    headache,  fever,  chills,  shortness of breath (not related to asthma), sore throat,  cough,  runny nose,  gastrointestinal issues (stomach ache, diarrhea, nausea),  discharge from eyes, ear aches, loss of taste or smell, etc.

    Students in the Care Center will be socially distanced and monitored by trained school staff members and/or our School Nurse. The family and/or emergency contacts will be contacted by office for immediate pick up of the student from school. 

    Families must immediately pick up sick students from the school’s Care Center. FWES Care Center is located on the Playground side of the school. Parents picking up students from our Care Center will park in the bus parking lot and follow signs to the outside door of the care center for signing out of the student.

    Medication Drop Off: Thank you the families who dropped of medication on Thursday and Friday. If you have medication to drop off at school- it can only be accepted between 9:30am-3:00pm due to the requirements of staff to support health screenings, arrival and dismissal processes. If you arrive during the arrival process, you will need to wait outside, social distancing in a mask until 9:30am. Thank you!

    Carpool and Walker Information:

    Expect delays due to increased number of students and health screening process. Thank you for your cooperation.

    Walkers must be picked up by 3:40pm Daily

    Carpool ends at 4:05pm Daily

    Please take time to review the documents linked and watch the videos about the procedures for both processes. 

    No adults will be allowed to move beyond the screening stations set up- only students allowed on the front porch to enter the school. Please make sure your child is aware that you cannot walk with them. If your child may struggle to separate from you if you are standing beside them as a "walker", it is recommended that you consider using carpool drop off, as staff may not have contact with students to hold a hand or give a hug to help them walk to their classroom. 

    All individuals on campus must wear masks (including adults with students) and maintain 6 ft social distancing. Please be mindful of younger siblings and keep them with your family at all times. 

    Supply Lists for F2F Families: It will be important that due to Remote/Asynchronous learning days, that F2F students have supplies at school AND at home for learning. If you are able, updated supply lists are linked here for getting your child the things they need at school. Due to safety, supplies cannot be shared in the classroom so if you want to send extra supplies for teachers to have on hand for students who may forget to bring supplies or run out during the day, that's great, too. 

    **The one addition for all students K-5th is a pool/beach towel for school. We are going to try to eat outside on as many days as possible and to help students maintain social distancing and provide them a nice spot for eating, we are asking each to bring a large towel to use during the week. It will be sent home with students each Friday for washing and returning the following week. If you have an extra for students who may not bring them, thank you for sharing! 

    Technology Guidance for Families: All students returning to the FWES campus are expected to bring their WCPSS Chromebook- CHARGED- each day. It will return home with the student daily for access to homework and on remote learning days. 

    *At FWES, students without a WCPSS Chromebook checked out to them at home- will be assigned a FWES Chromebook that will be used only by that student while on campus. While the WCPSS document references, bring your own device, we have found that WCPSS systems and other resources sometimes do now work well on non-WCPSS devices- so we are not going to sponsor BYOD when students return. 

    Kindergartner Arrival and Pom Pom Pathway to your Classroom: Our kindergartners new to Face to Face instruction for the 2nd Semester will have a Pom Pom pathway to lead their way to the kindergarten classrooms.  Watch the video linked here and your child will just follow the Pom Pom pathway to get to the purple kindergarten hall to find their teacher and their classroom! We can't wait to see them! 

    Sick or Symptomatic Student Information for F2F Families: The information below can be found in the FWES Handbook but is important information for families to review and understand- as the process this year will be VERY different. 

    Students showing ANY signs or symptoms listed- MUST go home IMMEDIATELY. Please make sure you have a plan for how to pick up your child quickly if he/she is ill during the school day. School staff are not trained medical personnel and their first responsibility is to insure the safety of our school community. Students who complain of illness will be treated as if there were an illness present to keep our school safe. Your understanding and cooperation is paramount to maintaining a safe school for students and staff. 

    Update: Siblings of any student showing or complaining of symptoms are also required to go home when the student leaves campus and to follow the same 10 day guidance for remaining at home. This WCPSS updated information was shared with families in an email the week of November 6th. 

    We are experiencing a Global Pandemic and there are no exceptions, except for those listed in the information below that require medical professional documentation. Families are asked to closely monitor students each morning and keep them home if they show ANY signs of illness or not feeling well. The best news is that if a child is at home, but able to learn- we are able to connect them to a Virtual Academy classroom so they do not miss learning or assignments, until they can return to campus! 

    Classrooms of students who have been sent to the Care Center with symptoms will be quickly relocated so the room can be cleaned and sanitized- as soon as all required sanitation procedures are completed, students will return to the classroom. The Care Center will also be sanitized after each student has been picked up. 

    New for 2020-21

    All WCPSS schools will have a Care Center set up in a classroom for sick students to be supervised and socially distanced

    • Students exhibiting illness during the school day will be immediately escorted to the FWES Care Center (not the health room)
      • FWES Care Center is on the Green Hall in a room facing the Green Top
      • Family members pick up students will park in the bus lot and bring Photo ID to the back door of this classroom to sign out and pick up a sick student. Signs will indicate the location of the Care Center as you walk up the ramp from the bus log.  
    • Students exhibiting ANY contagious illness symptom or symptoms of COVID according to the DHHS guide (see below) MUST be immediately picked up from school. 
    • Students who leave school sick must remain home for 10 calendar days unless confirmation of an alternative diagnosis from a health care provider that would explain the COVID-19-like symptom(s) is provided. 

    Students who are not feeling well in the morning should not report to school. Students who do not pass health screenings will not be allowed to enter the school building. With the many safeguards in place, it is still possible that students may get sick during the school day. Students exhibiting any illness symptoms connected to COVID or other communicable illness will be immediately escorted from the classroom to the school’s Care Center. 

    Sample illness symptoms from the CDC in children under 19 years of age may include: 

    headache,  fever,  chills,  shortness of breath (not related to asthma), sore throat,  cough,  runny nose,  gastrointestinal issues (stomach ache, diarrhea, nausea),  discharge from eyes, ear aches, loss of taste or smell, etc.

    Students in the Care Center will be socially distanced and monitored by trained school staff members and/or our School Nurse. The family and/or emergency contacts will be contacted by office for immediate pick up of the student from school. 

    Families must immediately pick up sick students from the school’s Care Center. FWES Care Center is located on the Playground side of the school. Parents picking up students from our Care Center will park in the bus parking lot and follow signs to the outside door of the care center for signing out of the student.

    PTA Cultural Arts Performance this week: We are so thankful for our FWES PTA and their support (along with the United Arts Council of Wake County) in continuing the cultural arts experiences for our students in a virtual format. This week students will enjoy The Beast-Sankofa, a history of African American music from spirituals to hip hop. Grade levels have chosen a time this week to watch the performance and teachers will be sharing that information in their family communications. 

    The WCPSS Board of Education is meeting Monday (3:00pm) and Tuesday (3:00pm and 5:30pm) to discuss some possible changes to instructional delivery for all students. You can watch their meetings live- or after the recorded versions- here: WCPSS You Tube Channel.

    Important Message from Mrs. Pierce

    Subject: Case of COVID-19

    Farmington Woods Elementary families and employees,

    We have been notified that an individual associated with our school tested positive for COVID-19. This individual was last on our campus on 12/4.

    We are working closely with the Wake County Public Health Division and the individual  to identify and notify anyone who may have been in close contact with the individual to provide them further instructions. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines close contact as being “within 6 feet of an infected person for a total of 15 minutes or more.” 

    There is nothing for you to do unless you are contacted by your local health department. If you are contacted by your local health department, please respond immediately and follow their instructions.

    If you are worried you may have been exposed and are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, you can be tested at one of the free testing locations throughout Wake County. You may also consult with your healthcare provider or call the Wake County COVID Hotline at 919-250-1500. 

    Symptoms of COVID-19 include fever or chills, a new cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, or a new loss of taste or smell.

    Following guidelines from the NC Department of Health and Human Services and WCPSS, the person with COVID-19 will not return to a WCPSS facility until they have met the requirements outlined on the Returning To School After Diagnosis, Exposure, or Illness website.

    Privacy Laws

    While we understand the concerns of families and employees, the school system is prohibited by state and federal law from disclosing the health information of students or employees. Each individual’s health information is a private matter. No one should publicly declare another employee or student as sick. In the event others need to be notified of a suspected or positive case of COVID-19, local health officials will notify them and provide them further instructions. Do not notify colleagues, students or families of positive cases. To protect individual privacy, notifications will not identify anyone by name or contain information that could be used to identify them.

    School Cleaning

    We will have areas that may have been exposed to the virus thoroughly cleaned in accordance with NC Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) and Wake County Public Health guidelines, using an EPA approved disinfectant for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

    Precautions to prevent the spread of germs

    To help prevent the spread of germs, the CDC, NCDHHS, and Wake County Public Health Division emphasize the importance of complying with the 3 Ws

    • Wear a cloth mask over your nose and mouth.
    • Wait apart, in order to create as much distance as possible. Avoid close contact.
    • Wash your hands or use hand sanitizer.

Temperature readings for daily screenings can be impacted if students are wearing hats and in cars with heat blowing prior to having their temperatures taken.     The Winter Break Meal Bundle will include 8 Breakfasts and 8 Lunches. 1 Meal bundle per child. You do not have to be a WCPSS student to receive meals, only 18 years of age or younger to qualify. The meals will be provided AT NO COST.

    Update- WCPSS is turning Pink to fight Cancer (all kinds)! The FWES school community is invited to wear Pink on Thursday, December 4th to show support. The school has pink hearts available for staff, students and families to write names or initials on of individuals they would like to honor.     Message from Mrs. Pierce

    Farmington Woods Elementary School families and employees,

    We have been notified that an individual associated with our school has tested positive for COVID-19. This individual was last on our campus November 19, 2020.

    We are working closely with the Wake County Public Health Division and the individual  to identify and notify anyone who may have been in close contact with the individual to provide them further instructions. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines close contact as being “within 6 feet of an infected person for a total of 15 minutes or more.” 

    There is nothing for you to do unless you are contacted by your local health department. If you are contacted by your local health department, please respond immediately and follow their instructions.

    If you are worried you may have been exposed and are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, you can be tested at one of the free testing locations throughout Wake County. You may also consult with your healthcare provider or call the Wake County COVID Hotline at 919-856-7044. 

    Symptoms of COVID-19 include fever or chills, a new cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, or a new loss of taste or smell.

    Following guidelines from the NC Department of Health and Human Services and WCPSS, the person with COVID-19 will not return to a WCPSS facility until they have met the requirements outlined on the Returning To School After Diagnosis, Exposure, or Illness website.

    Privacy Laws

    While we understand the concerns of families and employees, the school system is prohibited by state and federal law from disclosing the health information of students or employees. Each individual’s health information is a private matter. No one should publicly declare another employee or student as sick. In the event others need to be notified of a suspected or positive case of COVID-19, local health officials will notify them and provide them further instructions. Do not notify colleagues, students or families of positive cases. To protect individual privacy, notifications will not identify anyone by name or contain information that could be used to identify them.

    School Cleaning

    We will have areas that may have been exposed to the virus thoroughly cleaned in accordance with NC Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) and Wake County Public Health guidelines, using an EPA approved disinfectant for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

    Precautions to prevent the spread of germs

    To help prevent the spread of germs, the CDC, NCDHHS, and Wake County Public Health Division emphasize the importance of complying with the 3 Ws

    • Wear a cloth mask over your nose and mouth.
    • Wait apart, in order to create as much distance as possible. Avoid close contact.
    • Wash your hands or use hand sanitizer.

    We hope all of our FWES families had a great Thanksgiving break! We are all so very thankful to have you as part of our school community.

    We are still in the scheduling guidelines for 1st Semester:

    ALL PreK, ECS and K-3 students will be attending daily instruction through January 15th. 

    Cohort 2 of 4th and 5th grade students will return tomorrow on Monday, November 30th! Cohorts 1 and 3 of 4th and 5th grade students will remain in virtual learning the week of November 30th-December 4th. 

    As a reminder, students with ANY symptoms of not feeling well should remain at home. If your child needs to remain at home and are scheduled for face to face instruction, please reach out to your child's teacher to let them know and they will make sure your child can continue to access live instruction and all assignments.

    Medication Drop Off: Thank you the families who dropped of medication on Thursday and Friday. If you have medication to drop off at school- it can only be accepted between 9:30am-3:00pm due to the requirements of staff to support health screenings, arrival and dismissal processes. If you arrive during the arrival process, you will need to wait outside, social distancing in a mask until 9:30am. Thank you!

    Reminder that all medication requires the signed doctor's order (Rx medications and any required over the counter medications).

    Expect delays due to increased number of students and health screening process. Thank you for your cooperation.

    Walkers must be picked up by 3:40pm Daily

    Please take time to review the documents linked and watch the videos about the procedures for both processes. 

    No adults will be allowed to move beyond the screening stations set up- only students allowed on the front porch to enter the school. Please make sure your child is aware that you cannot walk with them. If your child may struggle to separate from you if you are standing beside them as a "walker", it is recommended that you consider using carpool drop off, as staff may not have contact with students to hold a hand or give a hug to help them walk to their classroom. 

    All individuals on campus must wear masks (including adults with students) and maintain 6 ft social distancing. Please be mindful of younger siblings and keep them with your family at all times. 

    Supply Lists for F2F Families: It will be important that due to Remote/Asynchronous learning days, that F2F students have supplies at school AND at home for learning. If you are able, updated supply lists are linked here for getting your child the things they need at school. Due to safety, supplies cannot be shared in the classroom so if you want to send extra supplies for teachers to have on hand for students who may forget to bring supplies or run out during the day, that's great, too. 

    **The one addition for all students K-5th is a pool/beach towel for school. We are going to try to eat outside on as many days as possible and to help students maintain social distancing and provide them a nice spot for eating, we are asking each to bring a large towel to use during the week. It will be sent home with students each Friday for washing and returning the following week. If you have an extra for students who may not bring them, thank you for sharing! 

    Technology Guidance for Families: All students returning to the FWES campus are expected to bring their WCPSS Chromebook- CHARGED- each day. It will return home with the student daily for access to homework and on remote learning days. 

    *At FWES, students without a WCPSS Chromebook checked out to them at home- will be assigned a FWES Chromebook that will be used only by that student while on campus. While the WCPSS document references, bring your own device, we have found that WCPSS systems and other resources sometimes do now work well on non-WCPSS devices- so we are not going to sponsor BYOD when students return. 

    Kindergartner Arrival and Pom Pom Pathway to your Classroom: Our kindergartners did a great job the last three weeks, but not to worry, we will maintain our Pom Pom Pathway for a few more days as a reminder to Cohort 1 and 2 students! Watch the video linked here and your child will just follow the Pom Pom pathway to get to the purple kindergarten hall to find their teacher and their classroom! We can't wait to see them! 

    Sick or Symptomatic Student Information for F2F Families: The information below can be found in the FWES Handbook but is important information for families to review and understand- as the process this year will be VERY different. 

    Students showing ANY signs or symptoms listed- MUST go home IMMEDIATELY. Please make sure you have a plan for how to pick up your child quickly if he/she is ill during the school day. School staff are not trained medical personnel and their first responsibility is to insure the safety of our school community. Students who complain of illness will be treated as if there were an illness present to keep our school safe. Your understanding and cooperation is paramount to maintaining a safe school for students and staff. 

    Update: Siblings of any student showing or complaining of symptoms are also required to go home when the student leaves campus and to follow the same 10 day guidance for remaining at home. This WCPSS updated information was shared with families in an email the week of November 6th. 

    We are experiencing a Global Pandemic and there are no exceptions, except for those listed in the information below that require medical professional documentation. Families are asked to closely monitor students each morning and keep them home if they show ANY signs of illness or not feeling well. The best news is that if a child is at home, but able to learn- we are able to connect them to a Virtual Academy classroom so they do not miss learning or assignments, until they can return to campus! 

    Classrooms of students who have been sent to the Care Center with symptoms will be quickly relocated so the room can be cleaned and sanitized- as soon as all required sanitation procedures are completed, students will return to the classroom. The Care Center will also be sanitized after each student has been picked up. 

    New for 2020-21

    All WCPSS schools will have a Care Center set up in a classroom for sick students to be supervised and socially distanced

    • Students exhibiting illness during the school day will be immediately escorted to the FWES Care Center (not the health room)
      • FWES Care Center is on the Green Hall in a room facing the Green Top
      • Family members pick up students will park in the bus lot and bring Photo ID to the back door of this classroom to sign out and pick up a sick student. Signs will indicate the location of the Care Center as you walk up the ramp from the bus log.  
    • Students exhibiting ANY contagious illness symptom or symptoms of COVID according to the DHHS guide (see below) MUST be immediately picked up from school. 
    • Students who leave school sick must remain home for 10 calendar days unless confirmation of an alternative diagnosis from a health care provider that would explain the COVID-19-like symptom(s) is provided. 

    Students who are not feeling well in the morning should not report to school. Students who do not pass health screenings will not be allowed to enter the school building. With the many safeguards in place, it is still possible that students may get sick during the school day. Students exhibiting any illness symptoms connected to COVID or other communicable illness will be immediately escorted from the classroom to the school’s Care Center. 

    Sample illness symptoms from the CDC in children under 19 years of age may include: 

    headache, 

    fever, 

    chills, 

    shortness of breath (not related to asthma), 

    sore,  throat, 

    cough, 

    runny nose, 

    gastrointestinal issues (stomach ache, diarrhea, nausea), 

    discharge from eyes,

    ear aches, 

    loss of taste or smell, etc.

    Students in the Care Center will be socially distanced and monitored by trained school staff members and/or our School Nurse. The family and/or emergency contacts will be contacted by office for immediate pick up of the student from school. 

    Families must immediately pick up sick students from the school’s Care Center. FWES Care Center is located on the Playground side of the school. Parents picking up students from our Care Center will park in the bus parking lot and follow signs to the outside door of the care center for signing out of the student.

    Students showing ANY signs or symptoms listed- MUST go home IMMEDIATELY. Please make sure you have a plan for how to pick up your child quickly if he/she is ill during the school day. The best news is that if a child is at home, but able to learn- we are able to connect them to a Virtual Academy classroom so they do not miss learning or assignments, until they can return to campus! 

    Classrooms of students who have been sent to the Care Center with symptoms will be quickly relocated so the room can be cleaned and sanitized- as soon as all required sanitation procedures are completed, students will return to the classroom. The Care Center will also be sanitized after each student has been picked up. 

    New for 2020-21

    All WCPSS schools will have a Care Center set up in a classroom for sick students to be supervised and socially distanced

    • Students exhibiting illness during the school day will be immediately escorted to the FWES Care Center (not the health room)
      • FWES Care Center is on the Green Hall in a room facing the Green Top
      • Family members pick up students will park in the bus lot and bring Photo ID to the back door of this classroom to sign out and pick up a sick student. Signs will indicate the location of the Care Center as you walk up the ramp from the bus log.  
    • Students exhibiting ANY contagious illness symptom or symptoms of COVID according to the DHHS guide (see below) MUST be immediately picked up from school. 
    • Students who leave school sick must remain home for 10 calendar days unless confirmation of an alternative diagnosis from a health care provider that would explain the COVID-19-like symptom(s) is provided. 

    Students who are not feeling well in the morning should not report to school. Students who do not pass health screenings will not be allowed to enter the school building. With the many safeguards in place, it is still possible that students may get sick during the school day. Students exhibiting any illness symptoms connected to COVID or other communicable illness will be immediately escorted from the classroom to the school’s Care Center. 

    Sample illness symptoms from the CDC in children under 19 years of age may include: 

    headache, 

    fever, 

    chills, 

    shortness of breath (not related to asthma), 

    sore,  throat, 

    cough, 

    runny nose, 

    gastrointestinal issues (stomach ache, diarrhea, nausea), 

    discharge from eyes,

    ear aches, 

    loss of taste or smell, etc.

    Students in the Care Center will be socially distanced and monitored by trained school staff members and/or our School Nurse. The family and/or emergency contacts will be contacted by office for immediate pick up of the student from school. 

    Families must immediately pick up sick students from the school’s Care Center. FWES Care Center is located on the Playground side of the school. Parents picking up students from our Care Center will park in the bus parking lot and follow signs to the outside door of the care center for signing out of the student.

    Due to the closure of all WCPSS Schools today 2 hours early- 

    Farmington Woods will close at 1:45pm.

    Families should prepare for students to arrive to bus stops 2 hours early from their normal arrival at home. 

    Families should prepare for carpool pick up between 1:45-2:05pm. 

    The YMCA After School program does not operate when schools are closed early. Parents with students enrolled in the after school program should plan for a 1:45pm pick up of students at school.

    All 4th and 5th Graders will continue to remain at home and access virtual learning. 

    Cohorts 1 and 3 students PreK, ECS, K-3 will remain at home and access virtual learning November 2-13.

    Getting Ready to Return to FWES! There will be many things that are the same, but many that will be different as our students return, especially as it relates to the Safety Protocols in place. Please take time to watch the videos provided by WCPSS WITH your student and help them understand the expectations when they are in any school building this year. We will also be highlighting these videos on our FWES News this week, so tune in to see them again:)

    Medication Drop Off: Thank you the families who dropped of medication on Thursday and Friday. If you have medication to drop off at school- it can only be accepted between 9:30am-3:00pm due to the requirements of staff to support health screenings, arrival and dismissal processes. If you arrive during the arrival process, you will need to wait outside, social distancing in a mask until 9:30am. Thank you!

    Reminder that all medication requires the signed doctor's order (Rx medications and any required over the counter medications).

    All riders must present to the driver or complete on line- the Parent Attestation Form that provides your assurance that your child's temperature will be taken at home each morning and that he/she will not get on a bus if they are not feeling well.

    Please take time to review the documents linked and watch the videos about the procedures for both processes. 

    No adults will be allowed to move beyond the screening stations set up- only students allowed on the front porch to enter the school. Please make sure your child is aware that you cannot walk with them. If your child may struggle to separate from you if you are standing beside them as a "walker", it is recommended that you consider using carpool drop off, as staff may not have contact with students to hold a hand or give a hug to help them walk to their classroom. 

    All individuals on campus must wear masks and maintain 6 ft social distancing. Please be mindful of younger siblings and keep them with your family at all times. 

    Supply Lists for F2F Families: It will be important that due to Remote/Asynchronous learning days, that F2F students have supplies at school AND at home for learning. If you are able, updated supply lists are linked here for getting your child the things they need at school. Due to safety, supplies cannot be shared in the classroom so if you want to send extra supplies for teachers to have on hand for students who may forget to bring supplies or run out during the day, that's great, too. 

    **The one addition for all students K-5th is a pool/beach towel for school. We are going to try to eat outside on as many days as possible and to help students maintain social distancing and provide them a nice spot for eating, we are asking each to bring a large towel to use during the week. It will be sent home with students each Friday for washing and returning the following week. If you have an extra for students who may not bring them, thank you for sharing! 

    Technology Guidance for Families: All students returning to the FWES campus are expected to bring their WCPSS Chromebook- CHARGED- each day. It will return home with the student daily for access to homework and on remote learning days. 

    *At FWES, students without a WCPSS Chromebook checked out to them at home- will be assigned a FWES Chromebook that will be used only by that student while on campus. While the WCPSS document references, bring your own device, we have found that WCPSS systems and other resources sometimes do now work well on non-WCPSS devices- so we are not going to sponsor BYOD when students return. 

    Kindergartner Arrival and Pom Pom Pathway to your Classroom: Kindergartners are new to the FWES campus and we know families may be worried about how they will find their classroom and teacher- no worries!     FWES Mid Week Updates:

    • Tomorrow- Wednesday, October 28th is an Asynchronous Learning Day for ALL students. Face to Face students remain at home and with all other students, access learning through their Google Classroom. 
      • Reminder that attendance is taken based on the assignments turned in tomorrow. 
    • Breakfast AND Lunch are free for ALL students this year! If your child would like to eat a school breakfast or lunch, they are invited to do so every day. October Menu

    • Library Book Pick Up Time Change: Books can now be picked up, after you get an email that they are ready:), between 10:00am-2:00pm each school day. 

    F2F Third Grade Students Beginning of Grade Reading Test: All of our F2F 3rd graders will be taking the state required BOG-Reading, each Thursday morning of their cohort attendance beginning at 9:30am- thank you for making sure your child is on time to school each day, but especially on those Thursdays:)

    We are excited to begin to welcome students back to our campus next week. There will be rotation of K-3 cohorts for the first 3 weeks; then the rotation of 4th and 5th graders will begin.

    Schedule Reminders This Week:

    Tomorrow, Thursday, October 22nd is an Asynchronous Day at FWES. Students will have assignments posted in Google Classroom for completion during the day, but they will not have their regularly scheduled live meets. Tomorrow is the last day of Q1, so there may also be assignments in your Google Classroom that teachers need for completing Q1 grading, so thank you for making sure to review your Google Classroom. Teachers will be taking attendance based on the assignments completed and submitted tomorrow. 

    Friday, October 23rd is a Teacher Workday- there is no school at all for students:) Enjoy the long weekend! 

    Schedule Reminders for NEXT WEEK- beginning Monday, October 26th

    Due to the return of F2F students, there are a few adjustments to Virtual Academy and Face to Face daily schedules that have been made and will begin on Monday. Please look carefully at information your teacher may share with you about changes needed. These changes will help all teachers on a grade level align as closely as possible. 

    Students in Virtual Academy may also notice the addition of some additional students from their grade level during the live lesson components as track out students in 2nd-5th grades will access lessons with VA students and VA teachers on the grade level, but follow up with their homeroom teacher on their work and any small group lessons and support needed. Again, please read information from your child's teacher carefully this week. 

     

    Additional School Updates:

    There will be no library book pick up on Thursday or Friday of this week. Stay tuned for updated information on pick up procedures once our F2F students return to campus.

    Please wish Ruth Riddick well as her last day at FWES will be on Thursday, October 22nd. She has been working toward the goal of becoming a teacher and will be taking a teaching position near her home in Harnett County. We appreciate all of her work at FWES and send her our best wishes in her transition to her new role. What a life long learner!

    Important Arrival and Dismissal Information

    School staff will be reaching out today to families who have not yet completed the Dismissal Transportation form, as it is critical we know how your student is to be dismissed at the end of the school day. Thank you for your assistance so we are prepared! h

    In preparing for Dismissal- we have added videos to each guide for families AND students to watch to understand the procedures when they arrive and dismiss from our school campus. Please review each document as it applies to your student or family. A reminder that no adults may enter the school building, so students need to be prepared to walk alone into the school. We will have special procedures for kindergarten students and all adults will be wearing red FWES shirts for easy recognition by students should additional assistance be needed to locate a classroom.

    Cafeteria Information

    Free and Reduced Lunch Applications- Families who received free/reduced lunch last year or who believe they are eligible this year are asked to complete this form. If the form is on file for F2F or Virtual Acacemy students if the student returns to school, it is not needed. 

    Families who have dietary preferences (such as vegetarian, no pork, etc.) or documented medical needs for students should reach out directly to Wendy Howell (temporary cafe manager) at CNS414@wcpss.net to let her know. 

    Breakfast and Lunch will follow the WCPSS Menu with occassional changes based on food availability. Note that meals will be served as written, there will not be a variety of choices in entrees, fruits/vegetables or milk due to the needs to individually package meals. 

     

    Student Health Safety Protocols and Parent Signature Form  wrong link was posted 10-21-2020-oops!

    Please take time to review the extensive document linked above related to the required health safety protocols for all students returning to any WCPSS school. The last page requires a parent signature and should be submitted to the school. Note- Teachers will be sending a copy of the signature page home with all students on their 1st day of school for families to sign and return. If you print at home, please send to school with your student on their first day of school.

    Please review the updated supply list for students returning to FWES. Please note that if at all possible, students should have a pencil box/pouch at home AND at school with the same supplies- so that they don't have to bring them back and forth daily. 

    *All grade levels have asked for student to bring a pool/beach towel to school with them, to use for eating lunch outside and for sitting on the floor should they choose to work.

    As we begin to prepare for your child's return to the FWES campus, we need to prepare our processes to insure that once they arrive, they are able to also get home safely. 

    Please use the link below to let us know how EACH of your FWES students will be leaving school each afternoon when they attend school. Teachers will need to know to prepare dismissal plans prior to student arrival, so we ask that you complete the form no later than October 20th.

    Custodian Appreciation Day- Friday, October 2nd- Our custodians are working so hard to keep our school safe and clean and will continue 10-fold when students return.     Updated Walker Dismissal Procedures for 2020-21

    As we prepare for dismissal of our walkers, we will be instituting a new procedure for walkers, in order to maintain safety of all walkers. There are several new processes that will be in place and are explained in detail on the document linked above. Two of the most important are highlighted below: 

    • Adults of "walkers" MUST be on the porch at 3:45pm as we must maintain social distancing during the dismissal process and cannot release all of the walkers at one time- so all parents should be present to meet students when they are dismissed and as they come out to allow other students to then be dismissed. If a student exits the building and does not see their parent waiting, the child will be sent back to his/her classroom to wait. Parents arriving after 3:45pm for walkers will need to show ID through the front door buzzer system and wait on the child to return to the front from the classroom and then wait for a school staff member to have the parent sign out the student. It is very important that if you choose for your child to be a walker, that you arrive to school on time each day.

     

    • The other major change is that walkers will NOT be allowed to leave the front porch/sidewalk area of the school without parental permission to walk alone. K-1 students may not be given permission to walk alone, unless they are walking with an older sibling from FWES. The Walker Permission Form below can be completed if you want your child to be allowed to walk off of the FWES front porch/sidewalk area without an adult. Students with this permission will be given a tag upon their return to school to put on their book bag to indicate permission- so adults on duty will allow them to walk on their own. Please note that FWES staff do not supervise beyond the porch/sidewalk area and students should be able to make safe personal decisions to have this permission given. 

     

    Library Book Pick Up Updates for September: 

    • Book pick up is Friday, September 25th from 8-9am and 11:30-12:30pm for those who have received an email that their books are ready
    • Books reserved by Tuesday, September 29th at 12:00noon will be included in the bags when students pick up instructional materials on Sept. 30th and Oct. 1st
      • Families may also return books during that pick up process, too. 
    • Due to instructional materials pick up- there will be NO BOOK PICK UP ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 2nd.

    New Library Book Pick Up Procedures October 5th-22nd

    • When books are ready for pick up, an email will be sent to the parent letting you know that the books are ready for pick up. Do not come to FWES until you have received the email notification that the books are ready. 
    • Books ready for pick up will be on the FRONT porch (change from bus loop) Monday-Thursday from 8am-4:00pm 
    • Families may come to FWES any time between 8am-4pm to pick up your bag of books- they will be labeled with student name. Books may also be returned at this time. 
    • Once we know more about the return to school schedules for Plan B students, we will make updates as needed and share those updates with families.

    I apologize for any glitches your family may have experienced this week watching the FWES Morning News. Apparently there were some updates in Google and You Tube that have kept us from being visible for some devices and families. 

    We are going to try something new today and hope it works:) 

    I am going to use Google Meet Live Streaming for the FWES Morning News Broadcast. 

    To Watch- you must be logged in through the Wake ID Portal to view. You will NOT be able to view if you are outside the portal access. 

    • Log in to your Portal
    • Go to the School Website icon to open the FWES website (looks like books and says My Website)
    • Find the FWES Live News image and then click where it indicates to click to view the news

    I will hopefully be there at 9:05am for you to watch tomorrow's news. While I tested it out last night with Mrs. Plotkin, please be patient if I stumble as I learn a new system:)

    I hope this message finds you having had the most spectaular outdoor weekend we have had in months! 

    As I prepare for this 2nd week of full day virtual learning, I realized there were a few information items I forgot in Friday's message: 

    • Mr. Pestana, our FWES music teacher, had his last day at FWES on Friday, September 4th. He is excited to return full time to graduate school and we wish him all the best! 
      • Our new music teacher has been recommended, but there is a process at WCPSS Human Resources required so it will be a few weeks before we have a replacement ready. In the meantime, our Technology and Counselor departments will be "in" your child's Music special until we can begin music again. Don't be surprised when you see them... your child still goes to "Music Google Classroom" when it is their class day for Music:) 
    • School Improvement Team Members: If you are interested in joining the Farmington Woods School Improvement Team, we would love to hear from you. The school improvement team (SIT) meets monthly to monitor school wide data and make decisions to positively impact the growth of all students. The team is comprised of members from all teaching teams in the building, our administrators and parents.  The parent representatives are voted on by the PTA general body at the first general body meeting. If you are interested in joining the SIT or have any questions, please email Elizabeth Plotkin (eplotkin@wcpss.net) by Wednesday, September 9th.  We look forward to hearing from you!

Please make sure you put your child's name on a piece of paper (large letters, please) that you can show on arrival to help us get the bag of supplies ready to go with your child's teacher. If you want students from another grade- please also include those names on the paper so we can gather the additional materials from the cafeteria and have them ready for pick up. 

    The Campus Map for Pick Up outlines the traffic pattern to expect tomorrow- with a reminder that the PTA will have Art to Remember items from Spring, 2020 in the pull over area at the bottom of the sidewalk in the parking.

    Communication from FWES: We are working hard as things change from day to day to get the information out to our FWES families the best we can. Please read the information that is sent and share it with your friends, too! We have to work together this year!

    For those interested- the log in will take students to a Google Classroom platform- and until our kindergarten teachers teach students what to do and how to access, it would not be helpful:) They have plans during our Orientation time to help kindergartners get set up with Wake ID and Google Classroom.

    Mrs. Pierce's Video Message (14 minutes)

    Hey FWES Families! 

    Virtual Academy registration is closed and cohort information is due to schools this week. We will follow WCPSS directives on when and how families are to be notified of cohort assignments. 

    As a reminder- we will have class assignments made the end of Orientation Week 1 and teachers will begin reaching out to families on Thursday afternoon and Friday to share the information. Based on our preliminary data we are able to keep all students at FWES with an FWES teacher for 2020-21. To best provide for instructional flexibility, most students will be assigned to a primary teacher but also have a co-teacher assignment in the grade level, too. This arrangement allows for coverage during teacher absences and for teachers to work together to differentiate for students, much like is common when we are in the building and teachers may share small groups of students to best meet common learning needs. 

    Pep Rally- We can’t wait to see you Friday!!! 3:00pm our staff will be ready to greet you in our two parking lots- please enter- right turn only- from Hampton Valley road and then exit right turn only to go through the 2nd parking lot- exiting with a right turn only to help with the flow of traffic!

    FYI: Special Education webinar for parents on Tuesday 

    We are inviting all parents of students who receive Special Education Services to watch a webinar regarding the upcoming school year on the WCPSS YouTube channel at 6 p.m. on Tuesday. Topics covered will include: the opening of school in an online environment, implementation of IEPs and special education services. The video will be closed captioned in English and Spanish. During the webinar, parents will be invited to share questions and feedback through an online form. Answers will be provided later in an FAQ.

      • FWES News Live Streamed Daily 9:05am (must have Wake ID to log in to view- may have to wait until device pick up to view- working on how to make that happen for everyone with WCPSS Tech Services this week:)
      • Morning Meetings Daily 9:15-9:45/10:00am- all grade levels, all students
      • Beginning August 31… full school day schedule. Live times (2-3 hours a day) by grade level will vary be shared with families on August 17th to allow for planning daily schedules while all students are learning virtually. Schedules may be adjusted when students return to the building and those updates will be shared at that time. 
    • Think about how you’ve been an IB Learner and how you might share what you’ve been doing to show the Learner Profile while you’ve been away from FWES
    • Get excited to see your friends and our amazing FWES teachers!

    8-6-2020  Technology Survey Responses Needed from FWES Families

    As I shared in the latest update, schools are required to have responses to the WCPSS Technology Survey from ALL families- even if you don't need technology for the 2020-21 school year to access virtual learning. 

    This morning FWES received a list of over 250 students from whom we do not have a response on the WCPSS Technology Survey. 

    We are going to begin calling all of these students' families today- to ask you each of the Tech Survey Questions:) And we will have to keep calling....

    If you miss our call or you KNOW you did not fill out a survey about your technology devices in your home- or you just want to be safe and fill it out again- we have added our own survey below to capture the four responses needed and we can then complete the task of filling in all the blanks on our FWES student list.

    FWES Follow Up on WCPSS Tech Survey   Need responses from EVERY family, even if you do not need technology support. 

    We will check our survey results regularly throughout the day and if we get your responses we will try to avoid calling, but there may be some overlap in timing and appreciate your understanding.

    August 3, 2020 FWES Family Updates

    Getting There!!

    FWES Virtual Academy enrollment is 407 students or 58% of our FWES students. We are working very hard to look at “class” configurations and as I have said, we may have to have co-teachers to insure that all FWES students remain with FWES teachers. 

    ALL WCPSS Schools are still waiting on the information from transportation and student assignment where students are assigned to cohorts for the 3 week rotation based on bus needs and making sure siblings K-12 are also in the same cohort. Once that information is received, we will be able to assign any remaining FWES Plan B students to cohorts. 

    AFTER all students in Plan B are assigned to cohorts, we will begin to configure classrooms and teachers. Considering today’s date, the many other tasks required to get school ready for staff to return and the painstaking process to assign students one by one to cohorts and then one by one to classrooms- we are planning to spend the first week of Orientation with students working with the entire grade level team to get re-acclimated to our school community and to each other:) We plan to have classroom assignments (with the one, two or possibly three teachers) and teachers ready by Friday, August 21st. 

    Families will be contacted about classroom assignments:) We will spend Week 2 of orientation building classroom community and getting supplies ready for distribution.

    Device Pick up August 17th week- not at FWES but handled at designated WCPSS High Schools. Watch email for details from WCPSS

    Orientation activities week 1 will be with whole team- teacher assignments will be made by Friday, the 21st- teachers will reach out- we may have co-teachers in order to keep students with FWES students and teachers- but it looks like we can be created and keep you here! We will spend week one building school community and doing school wide types of orientation.

    Orientation activities week 2 will be focused on classroom orientation and building classroom community with students and teachers. Expectations and curriculum content will be shared, along with the chance for students to get materials they need for learning. Mark your calendar for Instructional Materials Pick Up Dates below!!!

    A few FWES Updates- Deadlines Approaching:) 

    WCPSS Technology Survey and NeedsPlease make sure EVERY family completes the survey- even if you have a device for learning. The district is trying to account for every student to make sure they can access learning this year so even if you have a home device or a device you borrowed in the spring, please fill out the survey. 

    Considerations for requesting a device:

    • All students in a home need their own device for learning- not shared with a parent or a sibling
    • iOS devices such as tablets or phones are not appropriate for on line instruction

    Survey deadline is tomorrow, July 29th- please complete for K-5 students at Farmington Woods! 

    Recordatorio: Favor de completar la encuesta sobre las necesidades de tecnología antes del 29 de julio.
    Estamos solicitando a todas las familias con un estudiante en los grados del Kínder al 12vo grado que completen esta encuesta para cada estudiante, independientemente de su escuela, ya sea que haya aplicado a la Academia Virtual, para indicar si tiene un dispositivo o si necesita un dispositivo.     Virtual Academy Registration- Window closes at 5pm on Wednesday, July 29th

    • Last opportunity to register for Virtual Academy for 2020-21 school year
    • Families who have already registered and need to make a change in their registration must contact Mark Beamish, Virtual Academy contact at FWES at mbeamish@wcpss.net before 5pm on Wednesday, July 29th.
      • Requests for changes received after 5pm on July 29th will be handled individually in the order they are received and based on the availability of the change requested- particularly those requesting to return to the Plan B- as class size limits must be managed according to the state requirement.
