    March 16 Updates

    Good Afternoon FWES Families!

WCPSS and FWES continue to work through this current global crisis with a focus on maintaining the health and well-being of the global community of which we are all a part. It is not easy and flexibility will be essential along the way.

On Tuesday, March 17th- The FWES campus will be available from 12:00-5:00pm to families in order to retrieve any personal items that are essential.

If you have an essential item you need to retrieve from our campus- please review the information below about the procedures that will be taken:
    • All individuals who need to access the campus must sign in and out at the front entrance of the school. For the safety of all, please limit the number of individuals who come to the school.
    • Visitors will be escorted to the needed location after signing in to retrieve essential items. Due to the limited number of staff available on Tuesday, families may have to wait outside until a staff member is available for sign in and escort to the classroom.
      • There will be no access to the Inquiry Center, Maker Space or other common areas of the building.
    • From WCPSS: Schools will continue to safely store student medications.
      • If you have an essential medication you need to pick up- please email Mrs. Pierce at awpierce@wcpss.net before 12:00pm on Tuesday, March 17th with information on the time you plan to arrive to pick up the medication.
      • Medication sign out requires an extensive process and staff with required training. Mrs. Pierce will respond to your email about the availability of staff to assist you at the time you are planning to arrive. If staff will not be available at the time you need to arrive, additional arrangements can be made with WCPSS Health Services for assistance in retrieving your child's medication and Mrs. Pierce will assist in making those arrangements.

Resources for supporting practice of your child's learning are available on their Wake ID Portal. WCPSS is working on additional resources to be shared at the end of this week. We hope that your family will use this time to enjoy each other, continue to use the important practices of hand washing regularly (especially before eating each meal and snack) and maintaining social distancing and avoiding large gatherings of people. We encourage all students to read each day and enjoy the outdoors!

Staff may not be available in this next two weeks to respond to phone calls or emails. Thank you for monitoring FWES WebsiteWCPSS Coronavirus Site and your own texts and emails for updated information from WCPSS and FWES as they become available.

It is our hope that our FWES Community stays well and that we will see you all again very soon!
    With love,
    Winston Pierce

    March 15

    Good Morning FWES Families,
As you know by now, all public schools in NC will be closed for the next two weeks. At this point, that is all we know and can share. Of course there are many additional questions that WCPSS are continuing to work on the next steps for students, staff and families. Please be patient as I am confident that as more information is available it will be shared as soon as possible.

Staff may not be available in this next two weeks to respond to phone calls or emails. Thank you for monitoring FWES Website, WCPSS Coronavirus Site and your own texts and emails for updated information from WCPSS and FWES as they become available.

The next two weeks will count as WCPSS Spring Break and cover all of the remaining workdays and banked instructional hours (all days when students would not normally be in attendance at school). We hope that your families will use this time to enjoy each other and continue to use the important practices of hand washing regularly (especially before eating each meal and snack) and maintaining social distancing and avoiding large gatherings of people. We encourage all students to read each day and to use other resources on their Wake ID Portal to enjoy practicing skills they have been learning in reading and math.

It is our hope that our FWES Community stays well and that we will see you all again very soon!
    With love, Winston Pierce

¡Hola a Todos!

    Happy Friday FWES Families!

Today, as part of our emergency/security procedures, our school held a Code Red Drill. WCPSS Security and Cary Police Department were on campus to assist us during the drill.

Our students and staff did an excellent job following the guidelines and procedures during the drill. The only issue that was shared by Cary Police is that some students in classrooms with a substitute today did not follow procedures appropriately and were not responding to substitute directions during the drill. I would appreciate it if you would remind your child that in such an event- drill or otherwise- it is for their safety that students must follow procedures and directions from any school/volunteer adult.

It is important that, as with fire drills, that we practice emergency procedures to be prepared in the event that we were to need to use them to stay safe.

Please plan to join us tomorrow, Saturday, October 12th for our Fall FWES Campus Clean Up from 8:30-10:30am- Dynamite Darius from the Apex Global Fun Run team will be on campus to help, too! We'd love to have the whole family join us!

Have a wonderful fall weather weekend!

September 2 (1st-5th Grade Families Only)

Just a quick reminder for 1st-5th grade families....

All last week, we had about 30 kindergartners on campus each day for the staggered entry process, giving them all a chance to learn more about the school with lots of adult support.

Starting tomorrow- all 127 of our kindergartners will return for their official start to the school year! Remember the excitement? It is a wonderful day to launch their life-long learning:)

However, with 127 kindergartners also comes their families and all of them together learning procedures and expectations for arrival, dismissal and events during the school days.

It is important to know that arrival and dismissal tomorrow (and this week) will be impacted with the addition of 127 more students- your patience is appreciated.

As a P2 school- we teach our students #OtherPeopleMatter- please be caring and patient as there will be fewer parking spots, families who are not exactly sure what to do in the carpool lane, students who don't yet know their carpool number and will need to be pulled over and many adults who will take extra time to insure that all K students arrive and go home safely (of course, along with all students, too).

    Kindergarten Starts Tomorrow!!!

We are so excited to have all 127 of our kindergarten students with us at FWES tomorrow. I hope your students are as excited as we are:)

Preparing for tomorrow, here are a few reminders:

    • Triumphs and Transitions- 9:15-9:45am for Kindergarten Parents after drop off: Join our school counselors to learn about supporting your child's transition to kindergarten and how to celebrate all the successes (triumphs) they will experience throughout the year. The event will be in the cafeteria.
    • PTA Coffee Chat- 9:45am FWES Lobby; All of our PTA leaders were once kindergarten parents, too. They want to welcome you to FWES and offer you an extra cup of coffee tomorrow. They will be located in the lobby as you enter the Counselor event and then be available afterwards to answer any parent questions you might have as you transition, too:)
    • Carpool and Walkers- Each day last week, we had only about 30 kindergartners for staggered entry. Tomorrow we will have 4 times as many kindergartners as walkers and carpoolers. Patience will be essential during the dismissal process.
      • Walkers-
        • Arrival- parents are invited to park and walk with your child to their classroom tomorrow- and any day of the school year at FWES. Parents are asked not to try to talk to the teacher or give important information during the arrival time- as the teacher's primary responsibility is getting all 18-19 students settled to begin their day. All parents must have exited the school each by no later than 9:15am. Beginning the week of September 9th, parents will not be allowed to go past the front lobby after 9:05am- so please arrive early if you want to walk to the classroom on a regular basis:)
          • Reminder that cars should never pass the cars lined up for carpool on Hampton Valley Road- it is a double yellow line and the Cary Police monitor traffic in the area regularly
        • Dismissal- please arrive in plenty of time to be on the front porch of the school no later than 3:45pm. Remember that there will be much more traffic than there was last week- so please plan accordingly.
      • Carpoolers- Please watch the Carpool Video to be reminded of the process and traffic pattern. Right turn in and Right turn out ONLY during arrival and dismissal. Please plan for your arrival to enter Hampton Valley Rd from Cary Parkway.
        • Arrival- Safety Patrol and additional staff are on duty to walk with any kindergartner dropped off in the carpool loop as needed until they are comfortable finding their own way to their classroom.
        • Dismissal-
          • Make sure you have your FWES carpool tag displayed and that your student has the carpool number tags hooked on his/her backpack to assist with dismissal- helping your child learn the carpool number is also a great help
          • Remember that if you need to assist your child with a seatbelt or booster seat after they are loaded- please pull up and over into the pull over area past the stop sign to provide assistance, so that the carpool lane can continue to move and load students.
      • Review Bus Procedures- Thank you for making sure that once a bus tag is placed on your child's back pack that it remains there for the entire year. It is required for a student to board the bus as it contains emergency information for each student that is important for student safety.  Bus Procedures- Spanish   Bus Procedures- Arabic
        • Please review Bus Routes for 19-20 !
        • Monitor your student's ride home to see where the bus is by registering for Here Comes the Bus! App The school cannot see bus travels so each family must register individually to see their student's assigned bus.
        • Expect bus routes to be delayed the first week or two of school as drivers learn students and stops.  Here Comes the Bus is the best way to track your child's bus on its way to your child's stop.
    • Lunch Visitors: Please wait to plan to have lunch with them until the week of September 23rd- to provide your child the opportunity to learn procedures for the cafeteria and to practice these procedures with new friends:)
    • Volunteers: We hope you all will choose to support our school through the many volunteer opportunities available. All adults who are volunteers must register through the volunteer registration system. The system can take 2-3 weeks for your background check to be processed, so please register as soon as possible. You can register in the front office at the volunteer computer.

Be ready when your child gets home to hear about their amazing first day!

Some questions you may want to ask to get students talking about their day (it often helps if you engage them in an activity while asking the questions such as completing a puzzle, building with legos, playing with figurines, drawing, etc.):

    • What made you smile today?
    • Tell me an example of kindness you showed/saw.
    • What did you do that was creative/fun?
    • What made your teacher smile?
    • Who did you sit with at lunch?
    • What was the hardest rule to follow today?
    • Tell me what you look forward to tomorrow.

    August 29

    Hello Kindergarten Families!

We have had a great week meeting our new students and are working this afternoon on classroom rosters and teacher assignments. Teacher assignments for our kindergartners will be posted at the front of the school tomorrow- Friday, August 30th at 1:15pm. We will look forward to seeing and hosting you and your child from 1:30-2:30pm at our Kindergarten Open House to Meet your Teacher! If you have them, please bring your school supplies to the open house, too. We will have carpool tags, bus information and PTA representation at our K Open House, too, if you need them!

The first full day for ALL kindergartners will be Tuesday, September 3rd and it will be an exciting day! If you choose to walk your student to the classroom, please note that our School Counselors will be hosting a Transitions and Triumphs event for Kindergarten Parents on Tuesday, September 3rd at 9:20am in our Cafeteria. It is a time to meet other kindergarten parents and to learn about how to support your child in the transition to kindergarten triumphantly!

As you may know, we LOVE to have families come join us for lunch in the cafeteria at Farmington Woods- however, we do ask that you not come have lunch until the week of September 16th. Our kindergartners need to learn cafeteria routines and procedures before we have visitors with them. We have also found that as they are transitioning to a full day of school and may be tired- the separation from a visiting family member mid-day is also a challenge- so waiting at least two weeks gives them a chance to be much more well adjusted to the school schedule:)

    See you tomorrow!

    August 25

To prepare for Day 1- lots of reminders are below! See you soon!!!

First Day of School for 1st-5th Graders is Tomorrow! Monday, August 26, 2019

Kindergartners with the last name A-E will also attend FWES tomorrow:)

We were so excited to have seen so many of you on Friday at Open House! The smiles and energy in our building has us ready to Unlock Learning on Monday for everyone! If you were not able to come to Open House- class teacher assignments are posted at the front of the school (feel free to swing by today to know where to go in the morning). Staff on hall duties tomorrow will also have a list to assist students as needed.

1st Day of School Photo Spot! There will be a sign on the front porch that can be used for your 1st Day of School Photos tomorrow and again on Tuesday, September 3rd for our Kindergartners:) Get those smiles ready!

Arrival and Dismissal Reminders for Day 1: Getting our 750+ students home safely each day requires many processes and procedures. Your cooperation with all of the procedures is required each day of the school year. If you have any questions about the procedures, please email Mrs. Pierce and Mr. Beamish.

    • Students will be dismissed the method identified by the family at Open House. Changes must be made in writing- not email or phone call to the school. Thank you!
    • Arrival: Doors will open for students or family access to the building when the bell rings at 8:45am. Please remain outside until the bell rings.
    • Dismissal: Families arriving for afternoon pick up also need to remain outside until students are dismissed. Students will begin moving for dismissal when the 3:45pm bell rings. The front office is the most busy from 3:15-4:00pm making sure students are dismissed safety and may not be able to assist families during that time.
    • Expect lots of traffic and limited parking-Many families choose to walk students in to the school on Day 1. It will be a challenge:)
      • Follow Cary Parking Laws: Cary PD will be monitoring. Please do not block our neighborhood driveways/mailboxes and park only on one side of the neighborhood streets so there is room for emergency vehicles to pass if needed.
        • The Church of Latter Day Saints- Corner of Seabrook/Cary Parkway for Overflow Parking: We have permission to use the church parking lot during arrival and dismissal. To avoid the traffic issues on Hampton Valley road during arrival and dismissal- please use their lot and walk to and from the FWES Campus.
    • Review Carpool Video if you plan to use AM or PM Carpool- Thank you for reviewing the video and following our carpool procedures to maintain safe drop off and pick up each day for students and staff. Carpool Procedures    Carpool Procedures- Spanish
      • RIGHT TURN IN AND OUT ONLY! During arrival and dismissal, cars are only allowed to take a right turn into our campus from Hampton Valley Road and a Right Turn out upon exiting. Thank you for cooperating with this traffic pattern designed by our Cary PD for safety.
      • Students may NOT be dropped off prior to the start of the carpool lane at 8:45am- Note that you may see our Safety Patrol Students dropped off prior to 8:45am but other students may not be dropped off.
      • Cars are NOT allowed to pass stopped or lined up cars on Hampton Valley Road during arrival and dismissal as the road has a double yellow line. Cary PD issues tickets for passing cars. If you are not a carpool vehicle, please wait patiently in line for access to the campus parking lots if needed (or use the Church lot referenced above)
      • Please make sure your child's carpool # is on his/her book bag (in the envelope was a tag and zip tie to be used for attaching)
      • If you do not yet have a carpool # for 19-20- you MUST have a school issued tag to use PM Carpool. Tags will be available each morning from 8:45-9:10am in the lobby if you need one. They will also be available again to K families during K Open House on Friday afternoon.
      • Expect Carpool to be pretty slow the first 2-3 weeks of school as students learn their carpool #s and as our new families learn the procedures. The process will speed up dramatically as students learn their numbers and we typically are finished by 4:10pm daily at that point.
    • Review Walkers Procedures for AM and PM- Thank you for reviewing the procedures for walkers so that we remain safe for all!
      • Walkers may only enter the school from the front doors in the AM. Walkers must not arrive to the front porch before 8:45am as there is no supervision.   Walker Procedures- Spanish
      • PM Walkers-
        • If you are meeting a walker- you must meet them on the front porch of the school or across the street- students will not be allowed to walk to cars parked in parking lots.
        • Leave PLENTY OF TIME for parking and meeting your student as it is crowded and there is a back up of vehicles on Hampton Valley Road at dismissal that you cannot pass.
        • Students who cannot be met by a family member or picked up by 3:50pm daily will need to use the carpool process at dismissal. Students not picked up by 3:50pm will be waiting in the office for parent sign out- ID will be needed.
        • Please remember no pets are allowed on campus- if you have a dog with you- you must remain off campus to meet your student
      • Please review Bus Routes for 19-20 as many routes and stops have changed!

Be ready when your child gets home to hear about their amazing first day!

Some questions you may want to ask to get students talking about their day (it often helps if you engage them in an activity while asking the questions such as completing a puzzle, building with legos, playing with figurines, drawing, etc.):

What made you smile today?  Tell me an example of kindness you showed/saw.  What did you do that was creative? What made your teacher smile? Who did you sit with at lunch? What was the hardest rule to follow today? Tell me what you look forward to tomorrow.
