    June 11 (5th Grade Only)

    5th Grade Celebration Reminders:

We look forward to seeing you all today to celebrate your 5th Grader.

Doors to the cafeteria will open at 9:30am- Guests must remain outside until doors open- Thank you!

*During the celebration- guests need to remain in the guest area of the cafeteria for the entire program, including the end performance. We have school staff who will be taking photos of each student and they will be shared with families via email by Wednesday, June 12th. The photographers will also video the end performance and it will be shared for family access as well.

Following the performance- students will return to the classrooms for last minute items and then meet families in our courtyard for the picnic celebration.

Security will be on campus to direct visitors to parking. We will need to use the back field for housing the MANY cars who will be here today.

The weather is cooperating- picnic in the courtyard after the celebration! Due to the damp ground, families may want to be sure to bring blankets and/or fold up chairs.

Students may receive their report cards from their teachers after 11:30am. If students are leaving early, 5th graders may be signed out with their teacher.

We look forward to this special day! See you soon!

    Happy Last Day of School!

It's been a wonderful school year where our students have grown and continued to develop their 21st Century skills of collaboration, communication, critical thinking and creativity. The IB Learner profile is evident in all that they do as they inquire, think, communicate, reflect, care and show they are risk takers, balanced, open minded, principled and knowledgeable.

I hope your summer is filled with opportunities for our students to continue to grow, learn and have fun!

We'll see most of you in August!

    With love,

    Winston Pierce, Principal

All students at Farmington Woods Elementary received information from WCPSS today regarding school assignments for the 2019-20 school year.

Please check your child's folder/book bag for this important information from Wake County Public Schools. There have been some changes in base school assignments so ALL families should review the information provided by the district immediately.

Information on your child's school assignment letter is based on your current address. If you have moved, please see Mrs. Nagy in the front office with an updated proof of residence document to make a change to your address of record.

It is important to note that although the school assignment indicates a grade level for the 19-20 school year- that is based on the student meeting the required standards at the end of the school year- and only used as part of the projections for 2019-20, not a determination of a child's success with promotion criteria. Decisions about grade level placement for all students in 2019-20 will occur in May/June with end of year data review.

For additional information and options related to changing your school assignment for 2019-20 review the deadlines and process outlined here: https://www.wcpss.net/changeyourschool

Reminder: Friday is Walk to School Day- 8:30am- Kildaire Plaza meet Mr. Eller and guest walkers Ms. Vitullo and Mrs. Plotkin

    October 30

Wednesday, October 31st was originally scheduled as a Teacher Workday- but as we missed learning days due to the two hurricanes this fall- tomorrow will be a regular school day for learning.

The school will not be celebrating Halloween as part of our regular school day for learning, as it is not part of our curriculum standards. No student should wear costumes or bring costume related items to school. As we promote healthy bodies and healthy brains, we reserve celebrations at school to those related to learning outcomes. WCPSS Board policy requires that food during the school day meet nutritional guidelines so please do not send candy or treats to school with your child to share.

If your family celebrates Halloween- please save those celebrations for tomorrow evening. Be safe!

Please note that Halloween candy is not considered a healthy snack for students- please continue to send healthy snacks to school after Halloween.

    Thank you for your cooperation!

    October 26- Friday Updates

A few end of the week announcements and reminders:

    • Family Gardening Day at FWES has been cancelled for tomorrow due to the weather and soil conditions. We will keep you posted if it is rescheduled or look forward to lots of family help in the spring!
    • We continue to work with the Cary Police Department- but need the cooperation of our families whether or not the Cary Police are present at carpool (they will not be present forever and drivers are responsible for following the procedures to keep everyone safe). Thank you for always following the new guidelines and for preparing for RIGHT TURN IN AND OUT to begin on Thursday, November 1st. More info and a diagram will go home in the Monday Folders.
    • Walk to School Day for November is next Friday morning with Ms. Vitullo and Mrs. Plotkin as guest walkers.
    • If your child has forgotten a jacket or other item, please check our lost and found room at the back of the cafeteria. Items are much more easily connected back to owners if the student or family's name is in the item- please label all of your child's belongings. Note- if items are left outside during recess or lost somewhere in the building it typically takes a day before they get to lost and found as our custodial staff collect items left outside or in restrooms in the evenings and place them in lost and found the next day.

Have a wonderful weekend- we look forward to kicking off the FWES PTA Global Fun Run fund raiser on Monday, October 29th with a school wide pep rally at the end of the day (note that it will be difficult to check students out between 2:15-3:00pm as ALL students and classrooms will be outside for the pep rally- please plan accordingly).

    October 17- Carpool Changes

Thank you to the families who attended and contributed feedback to the Town of Cary for consideration in how improvements to the safety of the school entrance can be made for pedestrians and cars. We appreciate the collaborative effort to develop some ideas for implementaion to get started.

Please read the udpates that will improve the safety of the arrival/dismissal of pedestrians and carpoolers to FWES each day. The first set of changes will begin immediately as we work to transition to the biggest change on November 1st. Along the way additional information will be provided to families to assist with the changes such as maps of the surrounding area and a new carpool procedure video:)

    October 10

    Good Evening FWES Families,

As many families have expressed concern over a recent change in crossing guards, I wanted to make sure all families have an overview of the recent events.

Creating smooth processes for families on our school campus during arrival and dismissal is always a priority for our school. We use our staff and safety patrol each morning and afternoon to assist with the campus flow and insure smooth transitions in and out each day.

The Town of Cary, in conjunction with the Cary Police Department, takes over the monitoring of arrival and dismissal for all areas off of our school campus, including the two crosswalks. Recently, the Town of Cary made a change in the managing of the crossing guards at the 17 crosswalks that are part of the Town of Cary jurisdiction. This change has impacted one of the two crossing guards who serves FWES. We currently have a new crossing guard at the carpool entrance to the school while the same crossing guard remains at Hampton Valley Road/Farmington Woods Drive. The sole responsibility of all crossing guards is to insure the safety of the pedestrians who are accessing the campus at the crosswalks. Crossing guards only direct traffic to stop traffic for the safety of the pedestrians crossing.

Although families have shared concern about the carpool line and longer that usual waits, I would like to share that at school we have not seen an impact based on the crossing guard change. There have not been tardy students arriving late due to the carpool line nor has the afternoon carpool process been extended, with carpool ending at its regular time about 4:10pm.

As we move forward, if you access our campus through carpool in the mornings and/or afternoons, I ask that you keep these things in mind:

    • Remember to treat our new crossing guard with respect and caring as he is doing what he has been instructed to do. We would want to model for our students appropriate interactions with others. #otherpeoplematter
    • The responsibility now falls on drivers to move safely and to follow traffic laws when accessing our campus. As with the crossing guard, please treat fellow drivers with respect and care as safety is more important that slight delays due to traffic. Thank you for being patient at all times!
    • Consider your access path to our campus and determine if you can make a change that would eliminate the need for turns that are difficult- to assist you in smoothly moving in and out of FWES each day. (Please note the school cannot limit traffic direction- such as "no left turns", "right turn only" so that is not an option from the school.)
    • Please remember that the church at the corner of Seabrook and Cary Parkway offers their parking lot for families who want to avoid school traffic. You are invited to park at the church during arrival and/or dismissal and walk to FWES.

    Thank you for your cooperation!

    Winston Pierce, Principal

Walk to School Day- Friday, September 7th

Start your day with blood pumping by participating in Walk to School Day tomorrow. Meet Mr. Eller and our Guest Teacher Walkers Mrs. Williams and Mrs. Edwards at Kildaire Plaza at 8:30am- special guest walker will also be Pete the Cat! Families can walk with students to school on the beautiful local greenway. FWES sponsors Walk to School Day the 1st Friday of every month!

    Dismissal Reminders

Dismissal processes are moving smoothly for the 2nd week of the school year, but a couple of reminders will help us make sure things continue to move smoothly and everyone gets home safely.

    • Family members meeting walkers should be on the sidewalk at the front of the school no later than 3:45pm. Walkers are who have not yet left campus at 3:50pm will be taken into the office for sign out by an adult (must be 18 or older to sign out a student) from the student's locator card. If you are consistently unable to meet your walker before 3:50pm we ask that you get a carpool tag and use the carpool lane for pick up of your student.

    • Thank you for noticing the back of your carpool tag that indicates cell phones should not be used while driving through the carpool lane. Your focus on the traffic, student safety patrol and students is critical for the safety of all involved in our dismissal process.
    • Please help your child learn his/her carpool # and recognize the car that will be picking up in the line. Students are asked to look for their car once they exit the cafeteria and the line will move faster if students are able to recognize their car when it is time to walk to load.
    • Students are asked to stand on the porch until all cars have stopped moving and the lead safety patrol student releases them by telling them they can walk to their safety patrol. Please do not call for your child until they have been released when all cars being loaded have stopped moving.
    • It is exciting when you come through the line to see your student- but please do not slow down to wave at your student, as we ask you watch the traffic to make sure you are safely moving through the line to expedite our loading process.

    August 30

What a great start to the year we have had at Farmington Woods! Students are engaged in learning and have quickly gotten back into the routine and demonstrating our expectations- even our new friends!

Kindergarten Open House- Meet your Teacher! Tomorrow is our Kindergarten Open House from 1:30-2:30pm- we look forward to welcoming back our kindergartners and their families to meet their assigned teacher for 2018-19. Students are also invited to bring their school supplies with them on Friday to the Open House. PTA will be available, along with carpool registration and bus information for our kindergarten families.

PTA Go Play Save Books- 1st-5th grade students received their Go Play Save books yesterday as part of the initial fund raiser of the year. Families should either pay for the book that was sent home or return the book to school. Orders for additional books can be taken from family and friends through most of September. Thank you for supporting the FWES PTA!

Neighborhood Parking Concerns: While this week is often an exception to the remaining weeks of the year with dismissal, we have had several calls from our Farmington Woods neighbors indicating that families are not following Town of Cary parking regulations- blocking mailboxes- parking in front of driveways, etc. during arrival and dismissal. These issues are particularly worrisome to families who live on Farmstead Road as the road is narrow and there is much concern about neighbor access when vehicles are parked on both sides, but also for emergency vehicle access. Some of the more frustrated neighbors indicated they were ready to involve Cary Police- so please be mindful of being a good neighbor if you need to park. But EVEN BETTER- park and walk from The Church of Latter Day Saints at the corner of Seabrook and Cary Parkway- as they have volunteered their parking lot during arrival and dismissal each day- and also consider the use the CARPOOL LANE AM and PM!!!! The Kildaire Farms Home Owners association also recommends that if parking is needed, that our families use Farmington Woods Drive as it is much wider and can accomodate parking much easier.

    Dismissal September 4 Week

Please remember that this week we have had only a handful of our kindergarten students with us each day and during dismissal. Beginning Tuesday, September 4th we will have ALL of our wonderful kindergartners but that is likely to slow down our dismissal process as they begin to practice dismissal procedures with a much larger group of students. Your continued patience is needed- but reviewing the dismissal documents and following those procedures is the best way to insure we have a smooth and safe dismissal of our 750 students!

Have a wonderful long weekend- we are all in need of an extra day of relaxation (No School Monday- Labor Day Holiday) but will look forward to seeing you back on Tuesday!

    August 26

I am so very excited to get started with the 2018-19 school year tomorrow! Friday gave us all just a little glimpse into the eyes of our fantastic students and their families- tomorrow it starts for real!

Kindergarten Families- Please plan to check your child in on his/her staggered entry day in the FWES Cafeteria with our Kindergarten Team. We will look forward to seeing you all back on Friday, August 31st at 1:30pm when our Kindergarten Students have Open House to meet their teacher!

Monday- Last Names A-F; Tuesday- G-L; Wednesday- M-R; Thursday- S-Z

A few reminders that will help make sure Day 1/Week 1 runs as smoothly as possible:

    • Photo Spot: On the front porch in the morning, there will be a 1st day of school sign available as a Photo Spot, for those families eager to capture the 1st day in a photo- "Say Cheese!"
    • Doors Open: Doors will open when the bell rings at 8:45am
      • Carpool will also begin at this time- the only students who should be dropped off prior to 8:45am are those serving on Safety Patrol
      • Walking students should not arrive prior to 8:45am as there is no supervision available
    • Walk to the Classroom: Families are welcome to walk students to classrooms- however, please do not plan to have a long conversation with the teacher as the teacher is responsible for all students at that time and needs to get them prepared for the day.
      • Beginning Wednesday, August 29th- only families who arrive prior to 9:05am will be allowed to proceed to the classrooms with their students. The FWES News program begins each morning at 9:05am.
      • All families who have walked to classrooms with students MUST exit the building no later than 9:15am each day for the safety and security of our students. Thank you for your cooperation!
    • Lunch Visitors: Lunch Visitors may visit starting Wednesday, September 5th! We love our lunch visitors but this first week (and including Day 1 for kindergartners), students are learning new procedures, new lunch tables and we are still adjusting our schedules. Thank you for letting us get things settled and waiting until Wednesday, September 5th before joining your student for lunch! Lunch visitors must always sign in at the front office.
    • Dismissal Processes
      • Photo ID: Please remember that a Photo ID is required of any adult signing a student out from school in the office- and only those individuals listed on birth certificate or the Blue Locator Card are authorized to have a student released to them from the office.
      • No student may be signed out of the office between 3:15-3:45pm. Dismissal, especially the first month of school is an important time where the safety of students is our priority. Office and teaching staff cannot effectively make sure students are being dismissed appropriately with interuptions the last 30 minutes of the day. Thank you for your cooperation!
      • Carpool Procedures at Farmington Woods IBPYP Magnet Elementary- please review and BE PATIENT! All students have new #s and as your child was once a kindergartner, our wonderful K students have no idea how the process works. Reviewing the Carpool Video will also give you some good reminders. It will take a long time the first few weeks- and you can help by making sure your child knows his/her carpool # and that the number tag is securely fastened to his/her backpack. Carpool Procedures at Farmington Woods IBPYP Magnet Elementary_Spanish
      • Walkers Procedures - please review and note that parents waiting on walkers should remain on the front porch and side walk until walkers are dismissed. Please remember that parking without traffic is available at the church at the corner of Seabrook and Cary Parkway- Kildaire Farm neighbors kindly ask that you do not park on Farmstead Dr or Parkview Circle but use the wide space available on Farmington Woods Drive if you are going to park and walk to the school. Students and families may not re-enter the building after Walkers are dismissed as the remaining students require the attention of staff on dismissal duty.  Walkers Procedures_Spanish
      • FWES Bus Rider Procedures- please review and note that you can follow bus dismissal information on our website bus Twitter feed. It is critical that an adult (not an elementary age sibling) be present at the bus stop in the afternoon for all Kinder and 1st graders. The bus drive will NOT let the student exit the bus at the stop if an adult is not present. FWES Bus Rider Procedures_Spanish

If you received your 1st Day Packet at Open House- or if you receive it tomorrow- please review, sign and return the following items as soon as possible:

    • Blue Locator Card
    • WCPSS Handbook Signature Page
    • FWES Go for the GOLD contract page
    • FWES PTA Volunteer Interest form

Note that the Parent Portal form in your packet requires being returned in person with a photo ID to receive your access code to Power School. Due to the volume of needs the 1st week of school in the main office, Mrs. Nagy and our office staff will be prepared to receive those forms from families beginning Wednesday, September 5th.

Tomorrow is an exciting day for all of us- get a good night sleep and we'll see you soon!

    August 22

We can't wait to see you at Farmington Woods- we are looking forward to Activating Learning in 18-19!!!!

Check out our Twitter Feed @fwesibpyp  (available on the website, too) to see how our fantastic teachers activated learning all day on Monday #fwesactivateslearning!

Class Rosters Posted: The big reveal will be Thursday, August 23rd at 4:30pm when class rosters will be posted at the front of the school. Please feel free to stop by to see who your teacher will be and then plan on coming to meet him/her on Friday morning!

Open House: Friday, August 24th is our Open House 1st-5th grade from 8:30-11:00am. Kindergarten Parents have Orientation sessions at 8:45am or 10:15am in our gym (for parents only) on August 24th.

All FWES staff will be wearing our Green FWES Shirts (thanks FWES PTA) so find us on Friday morning if you have questions. In addition, WCPSS security will be on campus to assist with parking, thank you for following their instructions and for treating our neighbors with the respect you would want in your neighborhood if you park on a neighborhood street.

    Kindergarten Families for Open House:

Open house is a VERY busy time at school. Our kindergarten teachers will have an orientation session for kindergarten parents at 8:45am or 10:15am but we do NOT encourage you to bring your child- as the day can be very overwhelming and kindergarten classrooms will not be open to visit. It is a great chance for parents to get information and to visit the various stations to get prepared for staggered entry- review the Planning for Open House document to get an idea of what you can take care of before or after the orientation session you choose to attend!

We look forward to welcoming our kindergartners to their own Open House on Friday, August 31st from 1:30-2:30pm to meet their teacher and new friends!

    June 8

Today marks the end of the 2017-18 school year. As a school community we have much to celebrate and summer will give us all time to reflect, rest and rejuvenate as we look forward to next year.

It was exciting today to celebrate our 5th graders and their completion of the PYP, including Exhibition. I teared up thinking of them as Kindergartners joining our school in what seems like just yesterday.

Our K-4 students enjoyed a day of celebrating what they have learned and the friendships formed. Dismissal today was a celebration for most but some tears were also shed by students AND adults. FWES is such a community that the thought of not seeing your "family" is hard.

    • Report cards have been send home with students. If your child was absent- the report card will be in the front office with all of their belongings for pick up this summer. Report cards include the school supply list for 18-19 for each grade level, too.
    • Medications are also ready for pick up and must be picked up by June 22nd in the front office by a parent.
    • We are still missing almost 300 library books- if you run across one at home this summer- just drop it by the school or come pay for the lost book so we can replace it for other readers next year.
    • Please register and log your minutes for the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge to keep your brain active all summer.

We wish you all a safe, happy and inquiry filled summer! See you soon!

    With love,

    Winston Pierce, Principal

4th Grade EOG Score Information- WCPSS testing office has re-scored all WCPSS 4th grade student answer sheets due to the problem with the machine yesterday. 4th Graders are receiving their EOG score information today, please check the backpack for your child's EOG score information.
Report Cards: All students will receive Q4 report cards tomorrow. Report cards may be distributed to students after 11:30am.
5th Grade Celebration- Friday, June 8th 10:00am (visitors may enter at 9:30am through the outside side door of the cafeteria) followed by a picnic in the courtyard
Please see reminders below for the 5th Grade Celebration:
    • The 5th Grade Teachers have asked that students dress nicely for this special event.
    • Security will be on campus to direct visitors for parking on the back field and to make sure the fire lane remains accessible at all times. If you park in the neighborhood, please remember to follow all Town of Cary parking regulations and to be respectful of our school neighbors. A car was towed today during K-4 awards as it was blocking part of the street- please park carefully. Parking on the field is much closer to the courtyard for the picnic event.
    • The celebration event is in the cafeteria and is typically a standing room only event.  Thank you for using the chairs available for adults and in particular elderly or handicapped individuals. Due to limited space and fire regulations, taking younger FWES students to the event cannot be allowed, as we would exceed the capacity, however, siblings may be signed out to attend the picnic with the family if desired. The chairs at the front of the cafeteria will be reserved and marked for our 5th grade students.
    • Celebration items should not be brought into the cafeteria but can be presented to the student during the picnic event (such as flowers, balloons, etc.)
    • Following the celebration event, families are invited to join the entire 5th grade team in the FWES Courtyard for a celebration picnic. Families should bring their own picnic items for lunch, including folding chairs and blankets if desired. The picnic is a great time for photos and celebrating.
    • All students must be signed out with his/her teacher before leaving campus. If you are planning to take your child home following the picnic, please sign the student out on the green sheet that your child's teacher will have with them.
    • Teachers will have final report cards and can distribute them to students who are being signed out after 11:30am.
    June 6

EOG Day 3 is tomorrow, Thursday, May 31st- 5th Grade Science EOG 9:20am-1:30pm
5th graders may have free breakfast.
5th graders must arrive on time as students may not enter testing settings after test materials have been distributed.
30 minute delayed lunch schedule for K-4 classrooms.
Quiet conditions in the building throughout the testing time block.
Additional 3rd and 4th graders will also be participating in Make Up Testing tomorrow.
Thank you for your cooperation throughout this testing window!
    May 28
Hoping you all have had a nice long weekend and are finding some indoor fun today!
The State EOG format changes annually. While in years past, the completion of the test and collection of materials had been about 1:00pm- with the new format of a separate answer sheet for each test (in the past there was one answer sheet per student for all tests taken)- more time is needed each day for student to bubble in their name and other information before the test can begin. The ending time for most students will be about 1:30pm for the initial 180 minutes scheduled for each test- however, please note that students may test for up to 240 minutes and we had about 15 students who worked for another hour after a lunch break on Friday. We appreciate your cooperation with these 2/3 days each year and the changes that occur in our school schedules.
EOG Day 2- Tuesday, May 29th
3rd-5th Graders will take the Reading EOG tomorrow morning from 9:20am*-1:30pm**
*3rd-5th Graders may have free breakfast each EOG morning

*3rd-5th graders must arrive on time as they may not enter a classroom after test materials have been distributed- so they would have to participate in make up testing.

**3rd-5th graders may not leave a testing space until all materials are collected and counted. Students may not leave school prior to this time for their classroom and this year it seems that it is closer to 1:30pm before all materials are collected, counted and accounted for to release the testing setting. Thank you for your cooperation!

No visitors are allowed for lunch for any student at FWES on EOG Days due to K-2 students eating in classrooms and a fluctuating schedule for 3rd-5th graders.

Movement in the halls will only be for testing supervision and any emergencies.

For students who were absent, make up testing will begin on May 30th.

The 5th Grade only EOG Science Test will be on Thursday, May 31st- 9:20am-1:30pm.

    May 24

EOG Day 1- Friday, May 25th

3rd-5th Graders will take the Math EOG tomorrow morning from 9:20am*-1:00pm**

3rd-5th Graders may have free breakfast each EOG morning

*3rd-5th graders must arrive on time as they may not enter a classroom after test materials have been distributed- so they would have to participate in make up testing.

**3rd-5th graders may not leave a testing space until all materials are collected and counted. Students may not leave school prior to this time for their classroom and it is typically 1:00pm before all materials are collected, counted and accounted for to release the testing setting. Thank you for your cooperation!

No visitors are allowed for lunch for any student at FWES on EOG Days due to K-2 students eating in classrooms and a fluctuating schedule for 3rd-5th graders.

Movement in the halls will only be for testing supervision and any emergencies.

We will continue with EOG Testing Day 2 on Tuesday, May 29th and EOG Testing Day 3 (5th grade only) on Thursday, May 31st.

Your cooperation with the many adjustments needed these days is appreciated!

    2nd Grade Families Only:

    Hello 2nd Grade Families,

Typically at this time of year we have asked the families of our 2nd graders to make a language choice selection as they move into 3rd grade- choosing either Chinese or Spanish for language instruction in our specials rotation.

The class size law will require that we have 7 3rd grade classrooms for 2018-19 and with only 1 Chinese teacher and only 7 days in the rotation, it will be physically impossible to provide 2 days of Chinese instruction for our rising 3rd graders next year.

While we are disappointed, we have planned for the most win-win situation we can manage with time and personnel.

In 2018-19, ALL 3rd grade students will continue to attend 2 Spanish classes in a rotation but will also receive 1 Chinese language class in that same rotation. Students will be exposed to basic vocabulary and culture during this regular lesson.

Our 2018-19 3rd graders will be given the language choice as they transition to 4th grade for 2019-20.

Thank you for your support of our IB program and its emphasis on developing international mindedness through our foreign language programming.

    Hello to our FWES Families,

I am very excited to announce that Farmington Woods IB/PYP Magnet Elementary School has been selected as one of Top Five Magnet Schools of Excellence in the United States by Magnet Schools of America. All of the top five schools are included in the organization's selection of the National Magnet School awards! The awards will be announced at the national Magnet Schools of America conference in late April, 2018.

As part of the award selection process, a team from Magnet Schools of America will be visiting FWES sometime soon (date TBD) to see the wonderful work of our teachers, the involvement of our families and the engagement of our students. We will be working hard the next few weeks to prepare the building for the visit and look forward to highlighting the things that make our learning environment unique and special.

As I learn more information about the upcoming visit and how you can support our success in this process I will be sharing our needs. Please take time to recognize our wonderful staff and especially Anna Goodrum, our magnet coordinator for creating and IB/PYP program that permeates all that we do!

We are incredibly fortunate to have you and your family as part of our school community as you are a key factor in our school's success!

    Thankful for the FWES Community,

    February 27

    Good Afternoon Farmington Woods Families,

I want to take a moment to thank those of you who have taken the time to talk with your children about events of the past two weeks. I recognize this has been a challenging time for many as we work to ensure the safety and security of our children.

I cannot emphasize enough the messages you have heard about the importance of student relationships with adults.

We use and practice various safety procedures from lockdown drills to constant camera surveillance. But students are often the first to know when a threat is made. If they see something, they must say something. Working together, we can quickly assess most situations and stop rumors from spreading.

Some of our children are also demanding a voice in this issue. We should not be surprised if some choose to engage in organized activities in response to national calls for action.

Our priority is to ensure student safety as we strive to create learning opportunities for your children regardless of their views. If your child elects to participate in an activity, please urge him or her to stay on campus. Students who leave campus without permission are subject to consequences at the principal’s discretion.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. I have obviously spoken with many of you already and I am most grateful for your input. As challenging as it is to have these conversations, we can all learn from them and become a stronger community in the process.

    Winston Pierce, Principal

    January 29

This time of year is when we see a variety of illnesses pop up with our students. While we want them at school, for the health and safety of our entire school community, please note that the following conditions require that your child be picked up from school:

    • Temp of 100 or more (cannot return until they are fever free for 24 hours without medication– if your child leaves during the day for a fever, he/she may not return the following day as it will not have been 24 hours without fever)

    Happy Thursday FWES Families!

With the possibility of a wintry mix tomorrow afternoon, I wanted to share important winter weather information and reminders:

    • Major news services will share any information about schools- FWES cannot contact families- if there is winter weather, please check major news services for detailed information about any school impact.
      • WCPSS will use School Messenger to also send notifications directly to parents in text and email form (like this one)
    • Students will be sent home from school using their regular dismissal process if school is dismissed early. Parents wishing to change that transportation method should either come to the school office to write a note or pick up their child directly-- or let the teacher know in a written note.
      • Typically with weather events, there is not time for school staff in the office or classrooms to check email- so an in person check out or note to the teacher that morning are the best ways to communicate those changes.
      • If someone will be signing your child out from school or picking them up in carpool without a carpool tag, they will need to show ID at the school office and they also must be listed on your child's card as having authorization to pick up your child. The school cannot release a child to anyone, other than the parent, who is not listed on the card and has ID to verify their identity.
    • If WCPSS cancels all after school and evening activities- The FWES After School Program WILL NOT operate. Students will be dismissed at 3:45pm based on the dismissal information provided by the parent to the After School Program.
      • If your child uses another after school program such as YMCA, KinderCare, etc. , families should check with the agency for their weather policies. If WCPSS cancels after school activities, we have found that many other child care centers do the same. It will be important to provide information on how your child should be dismissed at 3:45pm.
    • If WCPSS were to cancel after school and evening activities on Friday, December 8th- the Family Evening Concert will be cancelled and the PTA will work with the Number Drummer to secure a date in the future for his performance and this special event.

Typically, I don't send this information until January but all of a sudden winter weather is here!

If we have our normal schedule on Friday, December 8th- please remember that we will have a 30 minute delayed lunch due to the performances in the morning.

Hoping we don't have to make any adjustments on Friday, but wanted to be prepared just in case. Thank you!

    Happy Thanksgiving!

Tomorrow is also the last day to turn in PTA Spirit Wear Orders.

Fridays are always Spirit Day at FWES- wear your FWES shirts or blue/yellow tomorrow to show school spirit!

    September 26

We continue to inspire learning as we pass the midpoint of the 1st quarter. All students should have brought Interim Reports home with them yesterday. K-3 and some 4th/5th graders will also have a copy of the Beginning of the Year literacy screening report. Both documents will provide you information on your child’s progress with the required standards of Quarter 1 (find them in the Monday Folders this week).

Please make sure you have a note on your calendar that Friday this week- September 29th- is an Early Release Day and students will be dismissed at 1:15pm. On Early Release Days, WCPSS dismisses schools 2.5 hours early to provide teachers time for professional development. Please make sure you are at the bus stop, waiting on your walker and in the carpool line 2.5 hours earlier than you normally are to make sure your child is picked up on time. If there are any changes in transportation- they must be shared with  your child’s teacher in writing.

Our inspiring staff work tirelessly to create engaging learning environments for your students each day. They are the most amazing group of professionals I have ever worked with and we feel fortunate to have our families as our partners. Please use the link “Inspiring Learning” to share with us any information you can about how anyone on our staff has inspired your child so far this year. The information you contribute is shared (without student/family names) in front of the whole staff to honor our staff for their work.

We are looking forward to a special visit Wed-Fri this week from the IB Global Center staff and a video crew on Thursday. We are one of only 3 schools world-wide getting this visit to capture PYP in action (1 school in Thailand, 1 in Qatar and 1 in Cary, NC, USA). What amazing recognition for the work of our school community each day to develop life-long learners! Please note that if you are visiting for lunch or walking with your child to class on Thursday, you may be asked to be part of the video. The finished products will be used with the roll out of the enhanced PYP curriculum components in the Fall of 2018.

    September 23
    September 20
Reminder- Tomorrow- Thursday, September 21st is a Teacher Workday- there is no school for students in honor of Rosh Hashanah the Jewish New Year.
We'll see you back on Friday!
    September 19

We enjoyed seeing so many of you at our Curriculum Night event last week and hope you got a better idea of what exciting learning is in store for your child this year!

Please make an important calendar note that Thursday, September 21st is a Teacher Workday- there is no school for students THIS Thursday.

Dismissal Cooperation Appreciated! Thank you to our “walker” and carpool families for your cooperation with school staff about dismissal procedures. The procedures are in place to maintain the safety of all students. A few reminders:

    ·        Transportation Changes should be made in writing through a note to the teacher (do not use email to communicate changes during the day as teachers may not get to read until after dismissal)

    ·        Walk in Transportation Changes at the end of the day are reserved for only emergencies

    ·        Students may not be signed out in the office after 3:15pm. Thank you for allowing Mrs. Moore and our other office staff to focus on end of the day procedures and dismissal.

    ·        Please remember that although as a “walker” your child has been dismissed at 3:45pm- the classroom teachers and other school staff are continuing to supervise the dismissal of the remaining carpool students, bus riders, day care vans and after school students until about 4:25 each afternoon. We ask that you not request to return into the building to retrieve lost items (unless it is a critical item like glasses, retainers or winter coats in cold weather)- as the teachers are still responsible for student safety during dismissal. Please wait until the next day for left items.

    From the PTA:

Go Play Save Orders are due by Friday, September 22nd- if you are not purchasing your book- the book should also be returned to school by Friday.

Family Skate at Jelly Beans for ONLY FWES families will be Saturday, September 23rd from 5:15-7:00pm- The $6 cost will also allow your family to stay and keep skating when Jelly Beans opens at 7:00pm.

Spiritwear Orders are currently being collected with Friday, September 29th as the due date for the Fall Order.

    September 11

We continue to appreciate your cooperation with our many school procedures! Each are in place to help support the safe and effective operation of our school community.

There are many items in the Monday Folders this week. Two items that I’d like to draw your attention to include 1) Curriculum Night information for this Thursday, September 14th that is aligned with our 1st General PTA Membership Meeting to review and vote on the PTA budget and projects for the year- your participation in both events is important in order to create a strong partnership and 2) PTA Membership on-line registration- not only PTA Membership that is required for voting rights at meetings but also paying for your child’s agenda. We have over 300 students in 2nd-5th grades who have not yet paid for their agendas, thank you for your attention!

Farmington Woods IB/PYP Magnet Elementary School has been nationally certified by the Magnet Schools of America (MSA) Standards of Excellence Certification Program.  There are only 55 schools in 12 states that received this recognition in this first year of the new program. We are proud of the work of our amazing staff and the collaborative culture of our school community that supported our ability to achieve this status. We are glad to have you as part of our FWES family! Read more here: WCPSS Magnet Certification Recognition 2017

The PTA Go Play Save fundraiser is in full swing. Please send back any book you do not wish to purchase. If you wish to purchase it, send in $30 in the envelope provided. If you have other family and friends who are interested in purchasing a book- please submit orders and payment for additional books. All orders are due by Friday, September 22nd. See Monday folders 8-28 for more information.

FWES will not be offering clubs to students in the Fall 2017 semester. Our teachers have some additional focus areas in the classroom due to State and Local policy implementation and time to provide effective instruction is at a premium. We will revisit the before school club concept in the Spring Semester. 5th graders may sign up for Ringers and Singers, 4th/5th Graders may apply for FWES NewsCrew, 5th graders may sign up for Dismissal Crew and 4th/5th graders may apply for Safety Patrol. Mrs. Long and Mrs. Williams will be working to share information with families about supporting the Green Thumb needs on our campus and securing interested students and families.

Healthy Brains/Healthy Bodies Reminder- Students’ birthdays are recognized school wide and in the front office each day. We are working to eliminate the celebration of birthdays with large sweet items at school. Please consider other options such as the Birthday Book in the Inquiry Center or healthy treats for a classroom on your child’s birthday. More information and ideas can be found here: Healthy Active Students at FWES

Please mark your calendar that Thursday, September 21st is a Teacher Workday- No School for Students and Friday, September 29th is an Early Release Day- Students are dismissed at 1:15pm.

We look forward to seeing you all at Curriculum Night on Thursday night- time with your teacher, time to visit specialists/special areas teachers and time to be involved with PTA!

    September 4 (Kindergarten Only)

We are very excited to have all of our kindergartners with us at FWES tomorrow!

Walking students to the classroom: Please be reminded that at FWES we allow families to walk to classrooms with students between 8:45-9:15am. Parents must leave the building before the 9:15am bell. Instruction at FWES starts promptly at 9:15am and parents may not linger in the classroom or outside the classroom door. If you choose to walk with your child, please note that you should not use that time to talk to the teacher for a mini-conference, share changes in transportation, etc. Teachers are working to get all students settled and ready for learning. Parents are also reminded that we will be working to build your kindergartner’s independence, so please work to assist them the first few days but then transition to a goodbye in the hallway and let your child put his/her things away independently. Thank you for your cooperation so that we can maintain this family friendly time of our day!

Helpers for drop off carpool: For those students ready for carpool drop off in the morning already- we will have 5th grade students ready in the main lobby to assist kindergartners in walking to their classrooms these first two weeks of the school year. Between the 5th graders and the adults stationed at every intersection, there is plenty of support to get them to the classroom.

Parent Session on 9/5 at 9:20am: Kindergarten families are reminded of a special event just for adults supporting kindergartners and the transition to a large school environment- Triumphs and Transitions- at 9:20am on Tuesday, September 5thin the FWES Cafeteria. Join our School Counselors and other kindergarten parents to work together to celebrate your child’s transition to kindergarten!

No Lunch Visitors Until September 18th: To help your child and our teachers with the transitions, we ask that families wait until the week of September 18th before coming to have lunch with your child. There are many new procedures and processes that students need to learn throughout the day and the transition to the cafeteria and back is one of the biggest. We need to have time to establish those routines with all students before having visitors. Thank you for your cooperation!

Dismissal- Procedures will work the same way they did for your staggered entry day. Thank you for following the Walker and CarpoolCarpool Video procedures if you participate in those types of dismissal. Carpoolers should have the blue carpool tag attached to their backpacks to assist as they work to learn their carpool number. After the child is loaded, cars who need to assist the child with booster seats or seat belts are asked to then move up and over in the pull over area to complete those procedures- to allow the line to continue moving.

*Important dismissal reminder- ANY and ALL dismissal changes must be submitted to the teacher in writing. If your child is a carpooler but you want them to be a walker, you must write a note to the teacher the morning of that day. DO NOT send the teacher an email to change transportation, as there are days when teachers only get to check email before the school day and after the end of the day. We DO NOT accept transportation changes over the phone at the main office, so please plan ahead.

Snack Reminders: As part of our Healthy Brains, Health Bodies work at FWES- students may have a water bottle with them at school during the school day for hydration. Water is also the only beverage allowed in the classroom. If you want your child to have a snack- send one food item, no juice or beverage other than water.

Expect your child to be pretty tired this week- they will have a busy, fun filled day each day at FWES!

    September 4

I hope you are enjoying a wonderful long weekend. After the first full week of school we all needed a little extra time to catch up this weekend.

From the PTA- Thank you for your support with the Go Play Save fundraiser. If your family is not going to purchase your book- or sell it to a family/friend- please return it to school.

A few reminders going into this week for all families:

Forms to register for the Parent Portal will begin being accepted on Tuesday in the front office. Photo ID verification at the school is required for this registration- so please bring your completed forms and your photo ID.

2nd-5th Graders who have not paid $3 for agendas should send it to school by Tuesday, September 5th.

Our Lost and Found is getting full already. Please make sure all items- including lunch boxes and water bottles are labeled with your child’s name so they can be returned.

Kindergarten staggered entry was last week- with only 30 kindergartners at school each day. Tomorrow, all 120 students will be coming to school- we can’t wait for them to have their official 1st day of kindergarten and be with us each day! Expect parking to be challenging on Tuesday morning and we encourage all non-kindergarten parents to use the carpool lane for drop off😊.  As they return it is important to ask that all families following parking laws if you need to come to the school.

It is also important to remember that it will take longer to help more kindergartners in our carpool line and we expect it may slow the line down a bit for a week or two- as they learn their number and learn to recognize their car from the front porch.

We appreciate your empathy and patience for the kindergarten students and their families as they learn procedures and routines at school- as you all were kindergarten families when you started, too.

    August 31

What a great week we are having with your children back in our building! Thank you for your patience and cooperation with carpool and buses- each day we have been improving, so hang tight with us.

Please be reminded that we cannot change your child’s transportation in the afternoon without a written note from you. For the safety and security of our students, we do not take transportation changes over the phone- so if your child will not be going home their normal method, you must send a written note to the teacher. It is important to note that teachers may not have time to check email during the school day- so email is not an effective way to communicate time sensitive information and should not be used for timely information about transportation changes.

As part of our Healthy Brains, Healthy Bodies focus at FWES, tomorrow morning is our monthly Walk to School Day event. Please meet Mr. Eller at Kildaire Plaza (Starbucks) at 8:30am to walk with your child to school. Students cannot walk without an adult, but it is a great way to get the heart pumping and oxygen flowing to start your day- oh, and our students, tooJ.

2nd-5th Graders who have not yet paid $3 for their agenda, should do so by tomorrow. Teachers will begin using agendas next week and need all students to have one. $3 may be sent in an envelope to your child’s teacher- child’s name on the outside; or payment may be made through the PTA MemberHub site: https://fwespta.memberhub.com/login

1st-5th Graders are bringing home a Go Play Save coupon book today with information on how the book can be purchased as part of a PTA fund raiser. If your family chooses to participate, you may purchase the book and take orders for additional friends and family through September 22nd. If your family is not going to participate, you will need to return the coupon book to school as soon as possible. More information was in the electronic Monday folder and is included with your copy of the book today.

    August 31 (Kindergarten Only)

We invite our kindergartners and their families to return to Farmington Woods tomorrow for our Kindergarten Open House event. Teacher assignments will be posted at the front windows of the school at 1:15pm and Open House will be from 1:30-2:30pm. We will open the doors at 1:30pm and ask families to wait outside until the doors are opened.

Students are encouraged to go ahead and bring their school supplies with them tomorrow so they are not loaded down on Tuesday and teachers can get them organized prior to the start, too.

PTA will be available at the Open House for membership, volunteering and spiritwear. We will also have carpool tags if you need to sign up to participate in our carpool lane. Review Carpool Procedures.

For families interested in meeting students as “walkers” (out the front doors onto the porch), please also review the Walker Procedures

    August 28
Monday Folders are available for your electronic review. This week, all families will receive many paper documents due to the need to have them completed and returned to the school. Beginning September 5th- only those families for whom we do not have an email address will receive paper copies of most folder items. Please make sure you have shared your email and cell phone # with our school so you can stay informed.
    August 27

We were so happy to see many of you at Open House on Friday and can't wait to start another amazing school year on Monday!

If you were not able to join us for Open House, please note that there are several pieces of information that were collected that your child's teacher will ask you to complete on Monday evening and return. Most importantly is the Yellow Card as it is used for emergency contacts and illness. There is also additional information teachers may need from you and we ask that you assist them in gathering starting the year information. If you are able to join your child with a quick visit to the classroom on Monday morning between 8:45-9:15am, you can access much of this information and briefly meet your child's teacher.

Parking on Monday morning will be a challenge and families are once again reminded that the church at the corner of Seabrook and Cary Parkway has offered their parking lot for easy parking. Families are always welcome to walk students to the classroom in the mornings, but are reminded that teachers are responsible for students from 8:45-9:15am and cannot stop to conference with parents. Parents must have exited the building by the 9:15am bell. Thank you for your cooperation!

The dismissal process the first few weeks of school can take longer, as we consistently work to insure the safety of our students. We carefully check bus tags, carpool #s and other dismissal information on each of our almost 800 students. We know that your time is valuable, but your child's safety is more valuable and we appreciate your patience as we insure all students are safe each day.

As this process is critical- we will not sign students out early in the main office between 3:15-3:45pm as we are finalizing many items for dismissal. Thank you for your cooperation!
An additional safety reminder is that any changes in transportation for your student must be submitted in writing and may not be taken over the phone. Please make sure you write a note to the teacher if your child's normal transportation will change on a day or permanently.

Parents choosing to meet students as "walkers" should wait on the front porch of the school until walkers are dismissed. Walkers who park and walk to meet students are asked to arrive EXTRA EARLY to be sure you have time to park and that your child is picked up between 3:45-3:50pm. We cannot start the carpool line until the walkers have left campus. Once with your child, please use sidewalks and appropriate pathways to exit the campus. A reminder that no dogs are allowed on our campus during arrival or dismissal.

Bus riders should expect routes to take longer as drivers learn students and stops and verify that students are exiting at the correct stop. Please note that no K or 1st grade student will be dropped at a bus stop unless a parent is present- so please wait at the bus stop for your child. Families with your child's ID # may also downloade the Here Comes the Bus app to track the bus progress.

Carpool families are asked to work with your child to learn the new carpool # for 2017-18 and to be patient in the line as it will seem to move extremely slowly the first few weeks. We will not allow parents to walk up and ask that students be dismissed from the cafeteria (carpool staging area) during the process, so please stay in your car and be patient. To be reminded of what the carpool process looks like from the car and procedures that need to be followed, you may access the FWES Carpool Dismissal Process video for additional information and reminders

With your cooperation and our students enthusiasm for starting the year, we are all set for a fantastic day tomorrow! See you soon!

    August 26 (Kindergarten Families Only)

    Hello Kindergarten Families!

We hope you are ready for a great week of Staggered Entry for our entering kindergarten students. This process allows us to bring in smaller groups of students for one full day of school. Parents should plan to bring kindergartners to school on their staggered entry day and walk with them to the check in table to share information about lunch and transportation home. The child will then stay at school the entire day and get to experience kindergarten fun!

The schedule for Staggered Entry attendance day is based on the students' last name. Please see below:

    Monday, Aug. 28th : A-F
    Tuesday, Aug. 29th: G-L
    Wednesday, Aug. 30th : M-R
    Thursday, Aug 31st: S-Z
Friday, September 1st 1:30-2:30pm Kindergarten Open House/Meet the Teacher- Please plan to bring your child with you to this event to meet their teacher, see their cubby and to see classroom friends. School supplies may also be brought to this event to avoid overloaded backpacks on Tuesday, September 5th.

Monday, September 4th- No School- Labor Day Holiday

Tuesday, September 5th- 1st Day for ALL Kindergartners

We tend to have a large number of kindergarten families participate in the carpool pick up process at dismissal in the afternoon. To help you prepare for that process and understand how it works, we have created a demonstration video that we hope will support your understanding of the process.

Please note- the carpool line and process takes MUCH longer the first few weeks of the school year as students get new carpool #s and have to learn to listen for new #s. While it can take longer, we will not allow parents to walk up to take students from the carpool area during the carpool process. If you wish to change the method they go home from carpooler to walker, you can do that in the front office, but we ask your patience as the more practice students get the faster the process will move for everyone.

Parking Reminder for Open House tomorrow: WCPSS Security will be available to assist with directing you to parking on the back field and the church parking lot at Seabrook and Cary Parkway has also been gracious to allow us to use their lot for school events. The Kildaire Home Owners Association has shared many complaints about our school families parking on grass, blocking driveways and parking on both sides of streets so that other vehicles cannot pass. In the spring, Cary PD was called to issue tickets. We don't want anyone to leave Open House and find a ticket, so please park as if it were your house and your street. Thank you for being good neighbors! See you in the morning!

We want YOU to be our volunteer:) Returning approved volunteers must renew their registration at any WCPSS school before October 31st- this also applies to families new to FWES who were approved volunteers at other schools (you will reactivate and indicate FWES as one of your schools for 17-18). • Email and text notifications- The School Messenger system allows schools to share important information with families through email and text messages. If you are not getting one or the other, it is likely that we do not have you correct contact information or for text messages, you did not choose to "opt in" to receive them. Please contact the main office at 919-460-3469 and we will work to assist you so that you can stay informed throughout the year.
    • Kindergarten families should have received information on Kindergarten specific items for Back to School in the mail- if not- please contact the office so we can verify your mailing address.
    • ALL FWES families will receive the full Back to School mailing the week of August 7th with LOTS of information to help you prepare to come back and know what to look for during Open House on August 25th.
    • Keep Reading! We are at 214,000+ minutes and are 88th in the nation for reading this summer with the Scholastic Summer Book Challenge. Be sure to log your minutes and those students reaching 1500 and/or 2000 minutes will receive a special recognition at the start of the school year!
