NC Department of Public Instruction Information for FWES- School Designation TSI-AT

The NC Department of Public Instruction continues to monitor schools and student progress in an effort to sustain closing achievement gaps for all subgroups. Schools are monitored and identified by End of Grade test score proficiency. Based on our EOG growth scores, FWES was recognized as Exceeding Growth for the 2017-18 school year; however, NCDPI identified our school in 2017-18 as having one subgroup needing improvement in proficiency on EOG tests: Students with Disabilities (SWD). As one of 103 WCPSS schools that have at least one subgroup identified through this state process, FWES will continue to work diligently to close achievement gaps for all students.

All schools identified across the state are required to notify parents through the letter attached below. Please review the information and parent resources linked in the letter and if you have any additional questions or concerns, please contact our school.

    December 3

Happy December to All! It is a busy time of the year for families but also at FWES as we continue to engage students in learning that will last a lifetime each day. We thank you for continuing to support your child's school success by making time for nightly reading and homework assignments. It is also important that students arrive to school on time each day and are allowed to stay through the 3:45pm bell so that their learning time is maximized. Thank you!

Parents as Partners at FWES: As we work to involve families as our partners for learning, we appreciate your participation in Parent Conferences in November. To help us continue our work to partner with families, please take 5 minutes to complete the survey at the link below to share your thoughts about Conferences and our Positivity Project implementation.

Parents as Partners Survey- Conferences and Positivity Project, Fall 2018

Volunteer Status and Card Update: WCPSS has a backlog of individuals who have registered/re-activated as volunteers and therefore there is a delay in the updating of the volunteer data base. We cannot distribute our annual volunteer cards until the database has been updated. Until that time- please use your 2017-18 card and if you did not have an FWES card last year- please be patient as Mrs. Moore verifies your status. If your status has not yet been processed, you will not be permitted to attend field trips or volunteer in the school/classroom during the school day. Thank you for your patience and understanding as this process ensures the safety of all of our students!

    Dismissal Reminders:

    • Transportation Changes: For the safety of students- transportation changes should be made using a written note to the teacher the morning of the change. Please note that there are days when teachers cannot check their email until after dismissal to please DO NOT use email to notify your child's teacher of a change. In addition, the front office staff cannot take transportation changes over the phone- as there is no way to verify the identity of the person on the line.
    • Early Sign Out from School: As is shared in our school handbook, the end of the day is a busy time at FWES and to maintain appropriate attention to dismissal procedures, the office staff will not allow students to be signed out of school after 3:15pm each day. As indicated above, we want students to stay through dismissal at 3:45pm to keep learning. If you do need to sign your child out early for an appointment, please arrive prior to 3:15pm.
    • Walkers: Students who are dismissed as "Walkers" will need to exit campus with an adult between 3:45-3:50pm. If you are driving to pick up your walker, please allow time for parking and getting to the school campus- as the traffic at dismissal can be challenging to manage. Walkers who are not connected with an adult by 3:50pm will be brought into the office and a parent must come into the school and sign them out in the office. Students who are regularly being signed out in the office may be required to use the carpool line. Thank you for being on time for dismissal!
      • Reminder- No dogs are allowed on campus during arrival or dismissal for student safety. Please remain off campus if you walk with a dog to pick up your student at the end of the day.
    • Carpool: Thank you for your cooperation with the new entering and exit procedures for Carpool. At this time, afternoon carpool is completed by 4:07-4:10pm each day. Please make sure you arrive prior to 4:10pm to have your child loaded into your car at carpool. Families arriving after 4:10pm will have to come into the school to sign out students in the main office. Thank you for showing that #otherpeoplematter by understanding that school staff have meetings, trainings and personal appointments after their day at work!

Happy Labor Day FWES- with so much information this week, electronic folders are going out today to give you extra time to read:)

Welcome Kindergarten Families! We are thrilled to have ALL of our students with us this week as we welcome our full kindergarten class to FWES to officially start their year.

Monday Folder information is information generated from the School Office and/or the FWES PTA. Additional information about your grade or classroom specifics will be sent home each Monday from your child's teacher. There is a lot of information this week from all of us, as is typical at the start of the school year. Thank you for reading through it all to partner with us and stay informed at FWES!

To assist our Spanish speaking families we will have Spanish speaking support each morning in the main lobby from 8:45-9:10am.

    Updates this week:

    • Blue Student Locator Cards: The blue cards are used at the front desk as contact information for ill or hurt students and are a very important safety document. Only those individuals listed on the card (including the parents listed on the front) are allowed to sign students out or pick them up from school. If you have not yet returned your Blue Card- please send it to school tomorrow. Thank you!
    • Security Procedures at FWES: Please review the document in Monday Folders this week to familiarize yourself with our school's safety and security procedures when it comes to access to the building/classrooms and checking students out from school. The safety of our school is our 1st priority and your cooperation is appreciated.
    • FWES Go for the GOLD: We spent time last week with all 1st-5th graders reviewing our behavior expectations through our Go for the GOLD. Thank you for partnering with us to insure that we can maximize learning time each day for all students by encouraging students to Go for the GOLD. Please return your GOLD contract signed by you and your student if you have not done so already.
    • Walk to School Days at FWES: As part of our commitment to growing Healthy Brains and Healthy Bodies, our school sponsors a Walk to School Day each month to encourage physical activity with students and families. We will Walk to School the first Friday of each month and this year there will be at least 2 Guest Teacher Walkers joining the group each month. Friday, September 7th is our September Walk to School Day! Meet at Kildaire Plaza at 8:30am (Corner of Farmington Woods/Wrenn Dr and Kildaire Farm Rd- Starbucks is being remodeled there) and join Mr. Eller, Mrs. Williams and Mrs. Edwards, our guest teacher walkers, to walk the beautiful greenway to Farmington Woods! For new families, students may not walk without an adult family member- so grab your walking shoes and join us!
    • FWES Staff Activate LearningHas your student had a great start to the year? Want to share about an FWES staff member who has Activated Learning for your student- or you feel deserves recognition? Please use this link to share feedback about our wonderful school staff members- FWES Staff Activate Learning! The information submitted will be shared with the staff member in a special certificate presented at our next staff meeting.
    • Before/After School Programs: At this time, we do not have additional staff available to work either program and therefore will not be able to accept additional families from our waitlist. We are still seeking to fill 2 Instructional Assistant positions and if either of those individuals would be interested, after being hired, in working M-F in either program- we could begin to accept additional students. This information would be at least 3-4 weeks away. If there are any changes, we will let you know.
    • PTA Go Play Save: Thank you for supporting the PTA's initial fall fundraiser by purchasing the Go Play Save Book that was sent home- or if you are not interested, please return the book to school. If you need more books- the large white envelope can be used to order additional books. Final orders and payment for books are due on Friday, September 28th.
    • Neighborhood Parking Concerns: While this week is often an exception to the remaining weeks of the year with dismissal, we have had several calls from our Farmington Woods neighbors indicating that families are not following Town of Cary parking regulations- blocking mailboxes- parking in front of driveways, etc. during arrival and dismissal. These issues are particularly worrisome to families who live on Farmstead Road as the road is narrow and there is much concern about neighbor access when vehicles are parked on both sides, but also for emergency vehicle access. Some of the more frustrated neighbors indicated they were ready to involve Cary Police- so please be mindful of being a good neighbor if you need to park. But EVEN BETTER- park and walk from The Church of Latter Day Saints at the corner of Seabrook and Cary Parkway- as they have volunteered their parking lot during arrival and dismissal each day- and also consider the use the CARPOOL LANE AM and PM!!!! The Kildaire Farms Home Owners association also recommends that if parking is needed, that our families use Farmington Woods Drive as it is much wider and can accomodate parking much easier.

     Monday Folder Items:
