Principal's Weekly Message - Week of January 25, 2021
Start of Second Semester | The second semester began on Wednesday, January 20. Our staff is still working on adjusting our upcoming spring semester schedule. As these changes are made in PowerSchool, students will be able to see these updates in real-time. Courses, teachers, and periods may change from what is currently posted, possibly multiple times, as course enrollments are finalized, and class sizes are balanced to meet current social distancing guidelines for our classrooms. This process may take up to ten days into the second semester. Each non-Virtual Academy student will be assigned a cohort. More detailed information about our spring semester return to campus plans will be shared later since the date to return to school was moved back to the middle of February.
Driver’s Education |
Remote Classroom Sessions and Registration:
- Assignment emails for the February classroom sessions have been sent. March and April classroom sessions will be sent in the next few weeks. Reply expectations are clearly noted as are payment dates; the courtesy of a reply is requested even if you are no longer interested/available.
- If people decline or change their plans, they will move to the subsequent month’s roster to give older students the option to move to an earlier session.
- Any registration forms submitted for now will be considered for placement. Registration forms DO NOT carry over to summer registration, which is usually announced around spring break.
- Students are placed in a class based on age, oldest to youngest.
- There is a wait of 3-4 months at least, possibly more for Behind the wheel.
- Should you decide to drive privately, it will be self-funded and paperwork can be requested by your driving school from JDS per directions here: In-Out-Transfers
Behind-the-Wheel:
Driver instructors receive new rosters at the end of a month to schedule/drive the following month.
- Currently, students are being assigned to drive in July and August. Drivers instructors are still being shared across the county.
- Each driver has been trained on safety protocols and has specific directions to follow that are not negotiable. This process will require patience.
- Once BTW concludes, the driver will issue a Certificate of Completion. Please review it carefully for correct spelling and all other information.
- Then, students need to request a Driver Eligibility Certificate (DEC) from the student services office.
DMV Eligibility Certificates:
Due to our building closure, DMV certificates will be issued by APPOINTMENT ONLY during regular office hours.
Click here to make an appointment to secure your Driver Eligibility Certificate.

EOC & Selected CTE Post-Assessments Exams | The school will administer End-of-Course (EOC) tests or a CTE Post-Assessments on January 11 - January 14, please continue to read below.
The EOCs are Biology, English 2, Math 1, & Math 3. The CTE Post-Assessments are Career Management, Foods I, Foods II, Child Development, Automotive Services, Principle of Business & Finance, Foundations of Health Science, Health Science I, Equine I, Principle of Family & Human Services, Project Management, and Hospitality & Tourism.
These assessments are in-person and will require your student to report to the school. Please review the testing message above within the document.
WCPSS HS Exam Guidance | As we continue to seek avenues to best support students in these unique times, WCPSS will be using the flexibility that the state has given to all districts to amend the grading structure for state exams. Specifically, for End-of-Course (EOC) and CTE Post Assessments, we will incorporate the following into our scoring plan:
- Minimum Score of 60. The grading scale for state assessments will include a minimum possible score of “60.” The goal of this change is to ensure that no student fails the course as a direct result of their score on the exam.
- Exam Score Only Improves Course Average. If a student’s score on the state exam is lower than the combined average of Quarter 1 and Quarter 2, the student’s exam score will be curved to equal their course average. For example, if a student has an “80” average for the course prior to the exam, then their lowest possible exam score is an “80,” but they will keep any score higher than an “80.” It is important to note that the score is curved for the purpose of calculating the course average. The original EOC scale score, achievement level, and percentile will be reflected on the student transcript.
Students who do not test and have not submitted a medical exemption will receive an Incomplete (INC) for the course.
All students are strongly encouraged to take their exams and do their best. The exam is an opportunity to share what students have learned. Our hope is that the scoring structure described below allows students to do just that!
Spring 2021 Schedule Updates | Our staff will begin making adjustments to our upcoming spring semester schedule over the course of the next week. As these changes are made in PowerSchool, students will be able to see these updates in real-time. Courses, teachers, and periods may all change from what is currently posted, possibly multiple times as course enrollments are finalized and class sizes are balanced to meet current social distancing guidelines for our classrooms. These schedule changes are necessary, due in part, to our updated spring Virtual Academy/Rotation plans that each student indicated earlier this semester. The window to request to be in our Virtual Academy or assigned to our rotation model has now closed. In early January, each non-virtual Academy student will be assigned a cohort, and more detailed information about our spring semester return to campus plans will be shared.
Spring 2021 Student Parking Information | WCPSS is waiving student parking fees as long as the district remains in Plan B or C. Students that are eligible to receive a parking tag will be issued their regular assigned park with a temporary parking space number on the back of it. We will continue with our normal registration procedures for issuing parking tags (complete the form). The school will begin collecting parking forms next week as students report to school. Students will be required to come with copies of all documentation. When we move to plan A, the district will charge a prorated rate for the remainder of the school year.

EOC & Selected CTE Post-Assessments Exams | The school will administer End-of-Course (EOC) tests or a CTE Post-Assessments on January 11 - January 14.
Your child’s teacher will notify your student which day this should report to school. Bus transportation will be provided if needed for students on their respective testing day(s). Bus routes will be posted by Friday, January 8. Students who are assigned can also see stop information in their individual power school accounts. Breakfast and lunch will be provided, free of charge. Student drivers will be able to park on campus without a tag, free of charge during exam week. Please be on time for exams. For information on how state exam scores will be factored into your child’s final grade, please see this link in this message. The week of January 11, there will be new protocols for everyone. We ask students to remain in the vehicle until told to exit for those coming through the carpool. Students in carpool will be screened while in the vehicle. Please be patient as we work through this new process. Expect delays, so arrive early to be on time. Students riding the bus will enter the atrium building, where individuals enter the building for the auditorium and gym where they will be screened.
If you have concerns about sending your student to the school for in-person testing, please complete this form. The form will close at midnight on Monday, January 4, to allow the school time to make testing adjustments. The information provided will assist the school in determining if they can accommodate your request.
The grading scale for state assessments will include a minimum possible score of “60.” This change aims to ensure that no student fails the course as a direct result of their score on the exam.
All students are strongly encouraged to take their exam(s) and do their best. The exam is an opportunity to share what students have learned. We hope that the scoring structure described above allows students to do just that!
PIF Warrior Recognitions for September-November 2020 | The following students are being recognized by PIF and will receive a ten-dollar gift card and certificate.

These schedule changes are necessary, due in part to our updated spring Virtual Academy/Rotation plans that each student indicated earlier this semester. The window to request to be in our Virtual Academy or assigned to our rotation model has now closed. In early January, each non-virtual academy student will be assigned a cohort and more detailed information about our spring semester return to campus plans will be shared.
Spring 2021 Student Parking Information | WCPSS waives student parking fees as long as the district remains in Plan B or C. Students who are eligible to receive a parking tag will be issued their regular assigned park with a temporary parking space number on the back of it. We will continue with our normal registration procedures for issuing parking tags (complete the form). The school will begin collecting parking forms after Winter break. When we move to plan A, the district will charge a prorated rate for the remainder of the school year.
2021-2022 Traditional School Calendar | The WCPSS Board of Education approved the 2021-2022 traditional school calendar. Please view the calendar before making plans for the next academic school year.

If a student fails more than one class, then the student will have to surrender his/her NC driver’s license to the NCDMV. If you need to confirm receipt, please email the student’s name and full birthday and I will check.
Behind the Wheel (BTW) will be a wait of 3-4 months due to people dealing with the consequences of the Covid-19 virus and lifestyle considerations. The driving instructors must be utilized throughout the county; there are fewer of them due to their own health concerns and increased responsibilities at home/school. Should you decide to drive privately, it will be self-funded and paperwork can be requested by your driving school from JDS per directions here: In-Out-Transfers
Behind-the-Wheel:
Drivers receive new rosters at the end of a month to schedule/drive the following month. Drivers are still being shared across the county. Each driver has been trained on safety protocols and has specific directions to follow that are not negotiable. This process will require patience. Once BTW concludes, the driver will issue a Certificate of Completion. Please review it carefully for correct spelling and all other information. Then, students need to request a Driver Eligibility Certificate (DEC) from the student services office.
DMV Eligibility Certificates:
Due to building closure, DMV certificates will be issued by prior arrangement with the school.

East Wake High School Required TSI-CU Notification | North Carolina's Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) State Plan identifies schools for targeted support and improvement when schools have student subgroup(s) that are consistently underperforming. Schools with one or more subgroups receiving an 'F' letter grade in the accountability system for the most recent and previous two years are identified as Targeted Support and Improvement-Consistently Underperforming (TSI-CU). The 2019–20 TSI-CU list, uses 2017–18 and 2018–19 data to identify schools with consistently underperforming subgroup(s). There are 1,464 schools identified on the 2019–20 list. TSI-CU schools receive support from the local school district.
For additional information on the identification of these schools please refer to the identification business rules on the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction website or the North Carolina ESSA State Plan found at: www2.ed.gov/admins/lead/account/stateplan17/ncconsolidatedstateplanfinal.pdf.

Title 1 Information
Greetings East Wake Parents, as we promised we have Title 1 specific documents and information to share with you this week:
It is vital that all parents apply for free/reduced lunch even if your student does not eat it. Our school’s Title 1 funds help all our students even those that don’t qualify for free and reduced lunch and we as a school depend on it.
Through August 31, all students may receive meals at no cost. Beginning September 1, students will pay for meals based on their meal benefits eligibility. Applications can be completed online at www.MySchoolApps.com, or a paper application can be requested by calling 919-588-3535. Students eligible for reduced-price meals will receive their breakfast and lunch at no cost for the 2020-21 school year.
All Title I Parent and Family Engagement information is in English and Spanish on the East Wake High School Homepage under the tab, ‘OUR SCHOOL’ within the subtitle Title 1 and F.A.C.E Center. (F. A.C.E. stands for Family and Community Engagement).
