• Wireless Communication Device Expectations

Apex Friendship High will enforce WCPSS Board of Education policy and state law restricting the use of cell phones and other wireless communication devices during class time.

What's the goal of this policy?

We want to promote positive digital habits, improve student focus in classrooms, and support student well-being by reducing distractions during the school day.

    What are the details?

Students and families can view an overview of our plan for implementing this policy at AFHS using this link.  Overall, please note the following details:

    • Students CAN use their devices in appropriate ways during arrival, departure, bus routes, lunch, and when transitioning between class periods.

    • Students CANNOT use their devices during class time including Pat Time and homeroom.  Primarily this focuses on use of cell phones and earbuds / headphones.  All students are expected to store these devices in their backpacks during class time.

    • Where students are not meeting expectations, they will be redirected by the teacher.  Where that is ineffective, students can either have their device(s) confiscated or be removed from class.

Both the policy and the team at AFHS recognize some necessary uses of these devices.

    • Students will be permitted to use their devices in moments of emergency as safety and wellbeing always come first!

    • Students who have accommodations related to an IEP or 504 plan can use their devices as perscribed in those plans.

    • Students may use their devices for medical needs.  We ask that parents alert the school of these needs proactively so as to avoid redirection that is not necessary.

    • Teachers do have discretion to permit students to use devices for teacher-identified instructional activities where the devices are helpful to the instructional goals.

    Overall Reminder

At AFHS, we are committed to students having the best opportunity possible to focus on their classes and accomplish their academic goals -- both now and in the future.  Our implementation of this required policy / law will always focus back on this compelling why.  No doubt, implementation will have "growing pains" and we will make adjustments as needed.  Updates and FAQs will be added to this page as necessary.
