Candidate invitations were sent via student email on Tuesday, 2/16/21. Candidates must upload their Leadership, Service, and Signature documents to the Candidate Information Form included in the invitation email by Friday, March 12, at 2:18 pm. Candidates must also fill out the Faculty Input Form as soon as possible. Candidates should follow up with the three teachers/coaches/club advisers they selected, as faculty members must submit their recommendations by Friday, March 12, at 2:18 pm.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we understand that students have not had the same access to service and leadership opportunities as in years past. The Faculty Council has adjusted requirements for 2021 accordingly. These adjustments have not been detailed on the AFHS website, but they are explained when students access the Candidate Information Form attached to their invitation.Candidacy is open to students in grades 10 and 11. Invitations to submit candidate information will be sent via WCPSS email in mid-February. New members will be inducted in the spring of the current school year and will begin official membership the following fall.
Prior to consideration for membership, students must meet the following standards for scholarship, service, leadership, and character:
A student must have a cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.6 or better on a 4.0 scale. Candidates will be identified by meeting this standard.
A student must have a minimum of three (3) leadership positions in at least two (2) organizations. These positions must be held during grades 9 through 11. Leadership is characterized as an office or position of responsibility in which one directs or motivates others. These roles must be verifiable and the signature of an adult supervisor is required.
Examples of leadership include, but are not limited to: elected officer for the student body, class, or club; committee chairperson; team captain; or other community leader.
While exercising leadership skills is commendable, this cannot be considered a leadership position. For example, if you choose to set a good example, lead, and motivate others on a sports team, you are exhibiting leadership skills, but you are not in a leadership position.
A student must complete ten (10) or more hours of documented community service. This service must take place during grades 9 through 11. Students must be serve in organizations both school sanctioned and outside of school. Participation must be verifiable and the signature of an adult supervisor is required.
Service activities are those that are done for or on behalf of others (not including family members) for which no compensation (monetary, academic credit, or other) has been given. Team, class, or club expectations do not count as service (setting up for sports events, lighting for Tech Theater, etc.).
The faculty council uses two forms of input. First, school disciplinary records are reviewed. Second, three (3) members of the faculty are solicited for input regarding their professional reflections on a candidate’s service activities, character, and leadership.
Students are selected for membership by majority vote of a five-member principal-appointed faculty council. The chapter adviser is not a voting member of the faculty council. Once inducted, new members are required to maintain the same level of performance (or better) in all four criteria that led to their selection.
