Community Assistance - Wake County Health and Human Services offers a variety of programs that can provide assistance to families. Programs and assistance include benefits such as food assistance, energy assistance, childcare subsidy, Medicaid, seasonal programs, transportation, Work First/CCS and other programs. Families can apply for multiple programs with one application: NC ePASS. This application is available in many languages and interpreters are available to assist families in completing the application if needed. In-person support with program applications is available Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 4:15pm at the Departure Regional Center.

Collaborative Learning Night - Join us January 22 from 4-6pm! This event will be a drop-in event where you can visit your child’s classroom at any time for family fun learning activities. The 4th graders will be taking part in an Arts in Actions performance in the gym at 6pm.  Pizza will be provided upon arrival, and the resource center will be in the Media Center. 

Wake Pre-K Application Now Available - Families of children who will be 4 years old by Aug. 31, 2025, can apply for pre-k services for next school year starting on January 13. The Wake Pre-K application will allow families to submit one application to determine their eligibility for one of three different services: WCPSS Title I Pre-K, NC Pre-K, Telamon Head Start. Happy New Year, MECME! We are excited to welcome students back from winter break tomorrow, Monday, January 6! The updated WCPSS calendar is linked here. 

Important Dates – We have two weeks left in the second quarter, which ends on January 17. There is no school for students on Monday, January 20 (Holiday) or Tuesday, January 21 (teacher workday).

Colder Weather – With the weather getting colder, please be sure to send your student with appropriate clothing to spend time outside. As an Environmental Connections school, we hope to get students outside often, even when it is chilly!

Interim Reports – Interim reports for quarter two will be shared by Friday. Please review these and reach out to your student’s teacher with any questions.

December Attendance - With Winter Break only three weeks away, we want to stress the importance of good attendance between now and that break. Teachers have instruction planned for every day between now and December 21. Try and ensure your student has perfect attendance this month!

Magnet School Tours – We are currently offering tours to families who are interested in applying to attend MECME as a magnet student next year. If you know of anyone who might like a tour, please direct them to our website (www.wcpss.net/millbrookes) or have them contact our magnet coordinator, Randi Jones (rjones@wcpss.net).

Pajama Reading Night (Save the Date) – We will have a VIRTUAL pajama reading night on 12/11 from 6:30 – 7:30. Students will be able to join one of several links and enjoy a read-aloud with a MECME staff member. More information coming soon.

Congrats to Safety Patrol! – Congratulations to the students in our Safety Patrol, who were recognized by walking in the Raleigh Christmas Parade this weekend. Thank you for all you do to keep arrival and dismissal smooth and safe!

Student Survey (Grades 3-5) – We will be administering the WCPSS Student Engagement Survey to all students in grades 3-5. The survey is anonymous. Parents can access the survey questions either in English or in Spanish. We encourage all students to participate, but if you do not want your child to take the anonymous survey, please contact your teacher or Mr. Aldridge on Monday, November 25.

We have a full week of school this week! With so many other interruptions in November, attendance is particularly important when we are in session. We have several grades with field trips or in-school experiences that we don’t want students to miss! School will be closed November 27-29 for Thanksgiving.

Make-Up Pictures Tuesday, Nov. 19 – Make-up pictures will be taken on Tuesday. This is only for students who were absent for fall pictures on October 22 or who request a make-up picture. If you want your child to participate, please be sure to let the teacher know.

Special Education Resource Fair - Students with disabilities of all ages and their families are invited to attend one of these informative sessions. The fairs will provide information about Intellectual and Developmental Disability (IDD) eligibility and allow students and families to engage with representatives from community partners that offer various therapies, adaptive sports, specialized recreation, and other helpful services. The Dec. 4 fair will be held from 4:45 to 6:45 p.m. at Cary Elementary. The Dec. 12 fair will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at Lake Myra Elementary. More information linked here.

We hope you are having a great weekend! As a reminder, there is no school on Monday, 11/11, in recognition of Veterans Day. We want to say thank you all of the active and former members of our MECME community who have served.

Cards for Our Military – In order to further recognize, thank, and support our military members, we are partnering with an organization and will be participating in a “Military Holiday Card Challenge.” This week, students will create holiday cards that will be sent to active service members. Messages will be non-denominational and only include student first names. Teachers will also preview the cards before packaging them for postage. MECME Family Fun Fall Fest – Thank you to all who attended our Fall Fest last week! It was great time. A special thank you to Ms. Sanabria, the Family Engagement Team, and our PTA for the planning and support of the event.

MECME Family Fun Fall Fest, November 4 (4:30 – 6:30) - Join us to celebrate fall with activities for the whole family! This will be an outdoor event. There will be pizza for everyone. The Resource Hub will be in Media Center along with voting for the “Turkey Hiding” Contest. Hope to see you there!

AIG Information - If you are interested in learning more about the Academically/Intellectually Gifted (AIG) program at MECME there are two opportunities coming up. The first information session will be in room 1202 during Fall Fest. The second opportunity will be on November 6th at 3:15 in the media center. If you cannot attend the 3:15 on November 6^th there will be a repeat presentation at 5:30 in the media center. Contact Emily Lagas-Rivera (elagasrivera@wcpss.net) with questions.

Backpack Tags – It is important that all students have their school issued backpack tag attached to their backpack. This helps us ensure students go where they are supposed to go during dismissal. If your student gets a new bag and you cannot attach the tag yourself, please notify the teacher and send the tag in with the new bag.

Hispanic Heritage Book Fair - El Centro Hispano and the Hispanic Heritage Literature Organization - Milibrohispano invite the community to the 4th Edition of the Hispanic Heritage Book Fair, which will be held from November 7th to 9th, 2024. This traveling event has established itself as a vibrant cultural platform, highlighting the rich literary, artistic, and entrepreneurial heritage of the Hispanic world.
