EOGs begin this week for our 3^rd, 4^th, and 5^th grade students. Please make sure students arrive to campus on time. This is critical – students cannot join the room once the testing session begins, which means they would need to test on a make-up day. Please also make sure students get a full night’s sleep so they come prepared and ready to do their best!

PTA Update - The PTA is URGENTLY looking for a Treasurer for the 2025-2026 PTA Board. This is a great way to be involved at the school and meet other parents!  Please let us know if you are interested or have questions (jennklawson@gmail.com).  

The PTA will also be holding the last general meeting of the school year during the End of Year Celebration, Thursday, June 10th.  We will be holding a short meeting at 6pm in the Media Center.  Come join us as we vote on the new board and wrap up the end of the year! 

Wake Up and Read Book Fair – Thanks to our partnership with Wake Up and Read (WUAR), MECME students received free books this week at the WUAR book fair! Thanks to Mr. Philip, Ms. McCain, and our volunteers for making this happen!

Several important updates this week! Reminder that Monday, May 26, is Memorial Day – there is no school for students on May 26.

End-of-Year Events/Signing In – We typically have an increase in families on campus during the school day for end-of-year events, like our Kindergarten move-up ceremony on June 12 and the 5^th Grade promotion ceremony on June 13. Based on guidance from WCPSS security, we will need all visitors to sign in using our Verkada system, even for these larger events. Please arrive early enough to allow time to sign in, and remember you will need a photo ID. We appreciate your patience and will work to make the process as quick and easy as possible.

Cell Phones – We have had a recent increase in issues related to student phones, especially in 5^th grade. We strongly recommend students do not bring phones to school – we do not have lockers to store them, and students are not allowed to have them turned on during the school day. Importantly, they are banned from the room during EOG testing. If needed, we may confiscate the phone and require a family member to come pick it up. Please help us by keeping phones at home.

Congrats, Ms. Pearson! – We are excited to share that Faye Pearson, one of our 1^st grade teachers, is the recipient of a 2025 Participate Learning Teacher of the Year Honorable Mention Award for her incredible efforts in the category of Leadership! She is one of only four teachers to receive an honorable mention from Participate Learning this year. Way to go, Ms. Pearson!

Purple Star Recognition – We are proud to share that MECME is one of twenty-one WCPSS schools who have received a 2024-25 Purple Star Award from the N.C. Department of Public Instruction. The Purple Star Award recognizes schools that show a strong commitment to students and families connected to our nation's military. We want to thank all members of our extended MECME family who have served, and as we approach Memorial Day, we remember and honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

General Assembly Recognition – MECME and Lincoln Heights Elementary both received a “courtesy of the gallery” recognition on the floor of the NC General Assembly this week. House Representative Sarah Crawford honored both schools for their national awards from the Magnet Schools of America this year.

Eventos de fin de año/Inscripción - Por lo general, tenemos un aumento en las familias en el campus durante el día escolar para los eventos de fin de año, como nuestra ceremonia de traslado de Kindergarten el 12 de junio y la ceremonia de promoción de 5º grado el 13 de junio. We are getting close to the end of the year! Attendance is extremely important these last few weeks, so please help ensure students arrive on time, every day. Next Monday, May 26, is Memorial Day – there is no school for students on May 26.

Water Bottles for Lunch – We have had cups available for students this year for water during lunch. The cafeteria has run out of cups, so students should bring a water bottle (please label with name) with them to school.

Thank you, Emendo – Last Saturday, a group from Emendo Consulting supported a beautification event on campus, which included cleaning out garden beds and spreading mulch. Thank you so much to these volunteers for their support in keeping our campus looking good for our students!

End-of-Year Assessments – We have several end-of-year assessments happening this week, including mCLASS for all grades and NC Check-ins for 5^th grade. Good attendance these last few weeks is so important! Thanks for your support.

Student Medication 2025-26 – There have been some updates to safety protocols for student medication for next year. Please read this attached letter (link) from Nurse Amy Kinkin that outlines these changes. She will hold office hours on Monday, August 18 from 8-11 (prior to the start of school next year) to assist with medication check-in next year. Kindergarten Camp - All families of rising Kindergarten students for the 2025-2026 school year are invited to attend Millbrook's Kindergarten Camp May 20th-23rd in our Ready to Learn Classroom. This opportunity allows you and your child to attend a 2-hour classroom experience for 4 days. It’s Earth Week, MECME! This is a big week for our school. Read below regarding the fun we have planned for this week. We also continue to celebrate Arab American Heritage and Autism Awareness throughout the month of April.

Earth Week is Coming to MECME – This week (April 21–25), we’re celebrating Earth Week with a fun-filled week of engaging conversations and activities focused on taking care of our planet! Each day will have a special theme and a color to wear that matches the day’s focus:

• Monday – Watt’s Up? Day: Learn about energy conservation. Wear yellow or orange to represent energy and light!
• Tuesday – Earth Day!: Celebrate the beauty and diversity of our planet. Wear any color of the rainbow!
• Wednesday – Water Wisdom Day: Explore ways to save water and take a pledge to protect it. Wear blue to show your love for oceans, lakes, and rivers!
• Thursday – Go Green Day!: Learn about reducing, reusing, and recycling, and plant a succulent to take home, thanks to our friends at Chiesi! Wear green to show your Earth love.
• Friday – Wild About Wildlife Day: Celebrate the amazing creatures we share our planet with. Wear animal prints or the color of your favorite animal!

We’re excited for a wonderful week of learning and action as we help our students understand how they can make a difference for our planet.

• Viernes – Día de la Vida Silvestre Salvaje: Celebre las increíbles criaturas con las que compartimos nuestro planeta. ¡Usa estampados de animales o del color de tu animal favorito!

Estamos emocionados por una maravillosa semana de aprendizaje y acción mientras ayudamos a nuestros estudiantes a comprender cómo pueden marcar la diferencia para nuestro planeta.

Día de campo, 2 de mayo - Nuestro evento anual del día de campo es el viernes 2 de mayo (fecha de lluvia 5 de mayo), ¡y necesitamos su ayuda! Por favor, revise este folleto con consejos y enlaces para ser voluntario o donar. Este siempre es uno de los favoritos de los estudiantes, ¡y no podemos esperar!

What a week for MECME!!! We won a major national award, and we learned we have a WCPSS Teacher of the Year finalist! More on both below. Reminder that Friday, April 18, is a holiday, and there is no school for students.

MECME Wins Prestigious Award – We are thrilled to share that, at a national conference in Nashville, TN last week, MECME was awarded the Donald R. Waldrip Magnet School of Merit Award of Excellence from the Magnet Schools of America (MSA). This is the second most prestigious award given by MSA and places MECME as one of the top two magnet schools in the nation among almost six hundred schools (elementary, middle, and high). This award belongs to the entire MECME community, and we look forward to celebrating with you! Read more about the award here (link).

Brandy Garrett – WCPSS Teacher of the Year Finalist – Our very own Ms. Garrett (3^rd Grade Teacher) has been named a WCPSS Teacher of the Year Finalist! Ms. Garrett is one of ten teachers (out of over ten thousand!) to be named a finalist! We could not be more proud of her! Watch the announcement on Facebook here! (link).

Culture Matters Event (4/24) - Save the Date - You're invited to “Culture Matters” on Thursday, April 24, from 5:30–7:00pm at Millbrook Exchange Park! Join us as we learn about different cultures found at MECME through information and recipes, enjoy our "Farm Stand," play structured park games with your peers, and enjoy a family picnic as we come together to celebrate our school community. EOG Schedule – End-of-Grade tests begin Monday, June 2. Students in grades 3, 4, and 5 will take tests in math and reading, and 5^th grade students will take a science test. EOGs have been added to the website calendar here (link).

Evento Culture Matters (4/24) - Reserve la fecha - ¡Está invitado a "Culture Matters" el jueves 24 de abril, de 5:30 a 7:00 pm en Millbrook Exchange Park! Horario de EOG – Los exámenes de fin de grado comienzan el lunes 2 de junio. Los estudiantes de 3º, 4º y 5º grado tomarán exámenes de matemáticas y lectura, y los estudiantes de 5º grado tomarán un examen de ciencias. Las EOG se han añadido al calendario del sitio web aquí (enlace).

We have exactly one quarter remaining in the school year. We hope you have a wonderful Spring Break and students return ready to finish the year strong! The building will be closed from Monday, March 31 through Friday, April 4. Students return on Monday, April 7.

Hive Hustle Fun Run – Our first “Hive Hustle Fun Run” PTA fundraiser was a great success! We have raised $13,431 of our $14,000 goal. Thank you so much for your contributions and support of MECME! Don’t forget we are still accepting donations until April 9 (bit.ly/mecmefunrun). The student signs were awesome, and students had a great time at the run on Friday. A huge thank you to Meg Hughes, Danielle & Nate Larkin, Jenn Lawson, and Amy & Dustin Overby for their work in organizing and managing the fundraiser and event.

End-of-Grade Assessments – Students in grades 3-5 will take end-of-grade assessments (EOGs) in reading, math, and science (5^th only). EOGs will begin the first week of June. We will share the testing schedule once finalized.

Nos queda exactamente un trimestre en el año escolar. ¡Esperamos que tengan unas maravillosas vacaciones de primavera y que los estudiantes regresen listos para terminar el año con fuerza! El edificio estará cerrado desde el lunes 31 de marzo hasta el viernes 4 de abril. Los estudiantes regresan el lunes 7 de abril.

Hive Hustle Fun Run - ¡Nuestra primera recaudación de fondos de la PTA "Hive Hustle Fun Run" fue un gran éxito! Hemos recaudado $13,431 de nuestra meta de $14,000. ¡Muchas gracias por sus contribuciones y apoyo a MECME! No olvides que seguimos aceptando donaciones hasta el 9 de abril (bit.ly/mecmefunrun). Los carteles de los estudiantes fueron increíbles, y los estudiantes se lo pasaron muy bien en la carrera del viernes. Evaluaciones de fin de grado -  Los estudiantes de 3º a 5º grado realizarán evaluaciones de fin de grado (EOG) en lectura, matemáticas y ciencias (solo 5º). Los EOG comenzarán la primera semana de junio. Compartiremos el cronograma de pruebas una vez finalizado.
