FWES Transitions and Farewells…..
Schools staff are no different from other individuals as change is sometimes needed and changes can impact work status, too. We have a few staff who will be leaving FWES this year and moving on to new professional challenges. We are so thankful for all they have contributed to our school community and send them on their way with our appreciation and best wishes! Thank you for doing the same!

Club Sponsor Interest for 2023-24
It was so exciting in 2022-23 to begin clubs again at FWES for our students!
It is time now, to begin thinking about clubs for the 2023-24 school year. We had several this year but would look forward to adding a few more so more students can participate in these additional inquiry experiences.
Clubs are a great way to support teacher/family interests and student inquiry. Thank you for considering what you might like to share with students: Chess, Photography, Robotics, Knitting, etc. If you are interested in continuing a club or starting a new one next year, please indicate that information here.
Completing this form does not obligate you for next year but gives a starting point when there is the need for quick turn around time in the fall:) We are going to consider some scheduling options that allow for more equitable access but in the past, Clubs have been scheduled on Thursdays either before school from 8:00-8:45 or after school from 4:15-5:00pm- we may start with these proposed times but explore other times to provide more equitable access for our students.
For those new to FWES- here is a link to the list of Clubs and descriptions from the 2022-23 school year.
Are you moving? Will you NOT return to FWES for the 2023-24 school year?
So that we can best prepare with the teachers we will need next year, please notify Marcia Tracy-Dale if your student will NOT return to FWES for the 2023-24 school year.
Email her at: mtracy-dale@wcpss.net

Teacher Characteristics for 2023-24
Each year Mrs. Pierce invites families to provide her with information on the characteristics that would support their student’s success in the upcoming year. This information is used to guide in the placement of students into classrooms during the summer. All input must be received no later than Thursday, June 15, 2023.
Please note that requests that identify a specific teacher name request will be discarded, as it is most important that families share the characteristics that are beneficial to the student’s success.
Families wishing to contribute may do so using the form below:
-
Fill out the Teacher Characteristics form at this link to provide your input by June 15, 2023
We are blessed at FWES to have an incredible teaching staff who work tirelessly to serve all students well each year… there is no requirement to submit this information as any FWES teacher will be amazing for your IB Learner next year!
- For those new to FWES- here is a link to the list of Clubs and descriptions from the 2022-23 school year.
- Parent sponsors must be approved volunteers and a parent sponsored club must have 2 adults present at each meeting/activity.
- Please complete the form more than once if you have interest in more than one club.
Thank you for considering how you might share your interest(s) with our students! Follow up will occur at the beginning of the 2023-24 school year.
Are you moving? Will you NOT return to FWES for the 2023-24 school year?
So that we can best prepare with the teachers we will need next year, please notify Marcia Tracy-Dale if your student will NOT return to FWES for the 2023-24 school year.

FWES Friday Folder Updates:
FWES in Forbes Magazine! If you did not yet see this article- we appreciate the recognition of our 20 years of IB/PYP accomplishments by Jim Clash, journalist for Forbes Magazine. He reached out to these globally minded individuals to send video messages to our school and school community on our 20th birthday about the impact of our work on our students and their infinite future opportunities due to being a learner in an International Baccalaureate school (and a public school no less!).
Forbes Magazine- Cohen, Daltrey, Andretti, Brewer, Congratulate Farmington Woods School On 20 Years Of IB Excellence
These personalities' video messages are embedded in our 12 minutes of birthday greetings from many others in our local community and beyond who are connected to FWES that are being shared this week to celebrate our 20 years! You might recognize some familiar faces as you watch!
Happy Birthday Farmington Woods IB/PYP Magnet Elementary School! (video messages- 12 minutes)

FWES Friday Folder Updates:
Administrative Assistant Appreciation Week! Our front office staff are essential to the running of our school each day. Attendance, money collection, staff payroll, sick students/injuries, medication administration, phones, intercom and everything else in between keep them busy from start to finish each day! Please take time this week to show your appreciation for Ms. Farr, Mrs. Fish and Mrs. Tracy-Dale as they are an incredible team!
National Magnet Recognition for FWES! It was my honor to represent FWES this week at the National Magnet Schools of America conference and receive two national recognitions:
-
National Certified Magnet School- there are only 163 certified magnet schools in the US and we were one of the first and just completed the process again and are thrilled to remain a certified magnet school!
-
National Merit Award School of Excellence- Annual the merit awards are given to magnet schools for not only the success of their magnet theme but their commitment to student achievement and diversity.
These recognitions would not be possible without the tireless work and commitment of our amazing staff and the leadership of Anna Goodrum, magnet coordinator. Please take time this week to show your appreciation to each person in our building for what they do to support the success of our students and our school!
Birthday Week Activities! As we cross a significant milestone of being an IB/PYP authorized school, we wanted to create a celebration week that engages students in activities that help them reflect on the unique and amazing things we do because we are IB/PYP- including our big event on Friday in taking action to make the world a better place! Thank you to the FWES PTA
-
Show FWES Spirit by wearing an FWES Shirt M-Th! PTA will provide EVERY student and staff member with a birthday FWES shirt to wear on Friday of this week to celebrate!
-
Take Action at Home! Being an IB world school reminds us all to find ways to make the world a better place. We’d love to see our students and families taking action outside of the school day- record your action (and photos if you have them) here: FWES Takes Action
-
School Activities
-
Birthday Decorations- Our halls will be decorated all week with birthday themed decorations to make sure we all feel the significance of our celebration
-
Check out our collaborative mural by our students with Mrs. Smith to commemorate 20 years…. It is stunning!
-
-
-
Birthday Bingo- All classrooms have a bingo board of 20th Birthday activities to complete throughout the week together.
-
FWES Takes Action- We have a sister PYP school in Turkey whose community was almost at the epicenter and devastated by the recent earthquakes. In communicating with the school’s PYP coordinator, they are in need of things that lift up their community by showing that others care and know of their struggles.
-
On Friday- Every homeroom will complete a brief lesson on earthquakes and the results of this natural disaster on the community. They will then create a poster that shows caring and support for the school community. These posters will be laminated and then mailed to the school to hang throughout their halls to show support from across the globe.
-
During a team meeting this week- each teacher will then also create small poster messages of support for their colleagues at the school that will also be mailed.
-
-
Oso delivers treats at lunch Friday! No birthday celebration is complete without a treat- and while we don’t allow treats for individual birthdays we decided 20 years of success deserved some treats. Oso, our bear mascot, will be delivering them throughout the lunch block on Friday! Sorry, but due to the energy likely in the cafeteria on Friday- and the need to keep all students in the cafeteria to celebrate together, no visitors will be allowed for lunch this Friday- thank you for your cooperation!

We appreciate all she has done to serve our school in her role and wish her well on her new endeavor. Her last day will be Tuesday, May 9th. If you need anything from her before then, please reach out and she will be happy to assist. Mrs. Naftel will be available to support all students and families for the last month of the year.

WCPSS Family Survey- Wake County Family Survey has been shared with families via messenger. The information FWES collects from this anonymous process helps us identify strengths and needs is very helpful to our planning process. The Family survey runs through May 12, 2023. We need your help to ensure we hear from as many family voices as possible. We are sharing the link for the survey in this communication in hopes that you will take a few minutes to help us with this important work. If you have not yet done so, please complete this survey before May 12th. surveys.panoramaed.com/wakecounty/family.

FWES Updates:
Congratulations to our 5th Graders! We saw how our 5th graders (whether they started here in K or just joined us this year) embrace and demonstrate all attributes of the Learner Profile as they chose serious global topics, researched and found a way to take action to make a difference. We saw them all being inquirers, thinkers, caring, open minded, knowledgeable and reflective in their academic achievements of the Exhibition work. In addition as presenters we saw them be communicators, principled, risk takers and balanced. We also saw how they have grown from young learners learning about the world in steps beyond their egocentric view to embrace perspectives from across the globe!

FWES Dismissal Reminders:
-
All Dismissal Changes MUST be in writing: To maintain the safety of all students any changes in how your child will go home in the afternoon must be in writing.
-
Handwritten notes to the teacher are the safest option- because if a teacher is absent, information sent to their email or through Talking Points will not be received. Handwritten notes can be given to a substitute- emailed info cannot.
-
-
Walkers must have parent waiting at 3:40pm: Please remember that walkers are dismissed at 3:40pm and it is the expectation that walkers who are meeting an adult (who do not have permission to walk alone) will have an adult ready at the front entrance by 3:40pm. Parents who are regularly late to pick up walkers may be required to use the carpool line for pick up due to the challenges that having to ring the doorbell and sign out has for the other dismissal processes that are still occurring from 3:45-4:30pm.
-
Carpool ends at 4:10pm: If you are using carpool to pick up your child, please be reminded that you need to be at school to get your child by 4:10pm each day. Thank you for making sure you plan for timing accordingly!

5th Grade Exhibition
All students in their last year of the IB PYP showcase their growth and learning as an IB Learner through an Exhibition. Our 5th graders, with the guidance of their teachers and volunteer mentors, have been working on their Exhibition since late fall. As part of the process, students select a globally significant issue that they research and then present their findings- including the action they decide can make a difference for the issue they selected.
As groups are finalizing their work to present to an audience on Exhibition Night 2023, they are also finalizing their action projects. Some action projects will be shared via Friday Folder to inform the larger community- and ask for support.
FWES Exhibition is Thursday, March 23rd (details on specific times will be shared next week)

Staffing Update: We are so proud of Elizabeth Plotkin, Instructional Facilitator at FWES, as she will be leaving FWES to become an assistant principal. Mrs. Plotkin has been part of the FWES family for 7 years and began her work with us as a part time assistant principal (funding did not allow that position to continue but we are so happy Mrs. Plotkin continued at FWES anyway). She will join a former FWES Teacher- now principal, Catherine Shearin, at Highcroft Elementary School on March 31, 2023. Please join us in wishing Mrs. Plotkin well as she continues to share her leadership talents in a school!

MUSIC COMPOSITION (click here to hear the original composition)
Primary (K-2nd Grade)
3rd Place-Niamh Romero, Farmington Woods Elementary, Cary
Title: Invisible Voice
Artist Statement: I composed this song because at school we read a book called Invisible Boy. I loved that book so I called my song Invisible Voice. I liked the book as the boy feels no one can see him but when a new boy comes to class, he is kind to him when the rest of the class makes fun of the new boy. I feel that this song is very generous and kind and a little bit sad because the invisible boy feels a little sad. I feel happy when I play my songs on my keyboard.
SPECIAL ARTIST WINNERS
Outstanding Interpretation
Ayoub Abaraouz, Farmington Woods Elementary, Cary
Title: Me
Artist Statement: See me happy.
VISUAL ARTS
Intermediate (3rd-5th)
1st Place-Nayeli Percy, Farmington Woods Elementary, Cary
Title: Different is Beautiful
Artist Statement: Some people think that being different means they are weird in a bad way, but I believe that everyone is different and that is beautiful. I recorded myself saying “Different is beautiful” and created the sound wave out of clay to “show my voice”. I was inspired by a conversation that I had with my mom about how my friends’ personalities remind me of different colors because they are all so unique and that is what I love about them.

FWES Updates:
Career Day Apr 14, 2023 9:30-10:30am in the Cafeteria
FWES Counseling Department is hosting its Annual Career Fair in April and the counselors would love to partner with parents and guardians to expose students to a variety of careers in order to jumpstart their thinking about the future. If you are interested in volunteering please click on the link below and either Ms. Sinclair or Mrs. Naftel will reach out to you to provide you with more information and next steps. After polling the 5th grade class, the top requests from our students are to hear from volunteers with experience in the following career fields:
Single Subject Acceleration (SSA) Requests for 2023-24: Please review the overview linked here, along with the required documents and timelines. Mrs. Rowe will hold virtual parent meetings on March 2nd at 6:00pm or March 3rd 12:00pm to share more information and answer your questions.
WCPSS Deadline to request testing for traditional calendar schools is Friday, March 24th at 4:00pm. No late requests will be accepted.
Snacks During School Day: A reminder to families that students are given time each day to eat a snack while at school. On most days, snack is done while students are also working on instructional activities. Families are asked and reminded to send a snack with your student each day. We are aware that some days a snack may be forgotten and teachers will try to have extra snacks available, but they are not guaranteed to be available. It is the family responsibility to send a daily snack for their student.
If you want to help provide extra snacks to your child’s classroom for forgotten snacks, we ask that you use the list of items below to send in to the teacher. The school and teachers ask that extra snacks should match our healthy snack guidelines:
-
Cereal Bars
-
Pouch Applesauce (no spoons needed)
-
Raisins
-
Granola Bars
-
Pretzels
Please do not send chips, cookies and other items that do not support mid-day nutritional needs of our students as they do not meet the during the school day nutritional requirements of WCPSS Board Policy 6140 (Section C-3 that requires all snack items available during the day to students- which would include shared snacks in classrooms- comply with smart snack guidelines). We will not be allowed to share these items with students during snack time and will return them to families.
WCPSS Dress Code Reminders:
Please review the information from WCPSS Policy 4316 related to student dress code and in particular the section related to head coverings:
g) Head coverings (including hats, hoods, sweat bands, and bandanas) are generally prohibited in the school building. However, students may wear head coverings in the school building as an expression of sincerely held religious belief (e.g., hijabs or yarmulkes) or cultural expression (e.g., geles) or to reasonably accommodate medical or disability-related issues (e.g., protective helmets).
Thank you for helping support this policy for your student each day- especially as it relates to wearing hats, hoods, sweat bands and bandanas in the building. Teachers and administrators will provide students with gentle reminders when the policy is not being followed and your partnership is appreciated. Hats, hoods and sweatbands are welcome when students are outside the building, as indicated in the policy.

Campus Work Day This Weekend (Rescheduled to Sunday, February 26, 1-3pm due to weather)
We will be starting in the bus loop parking area with cutting away plants that don't belong, picking up sticks, and refreshing the pots in front of the school. Some courtyard jobs will include weeding, planting a small bush, and repairing a portion of the amphitheater hill that's missing some dirt. If there's a good turnout we will tackle the overgrown hill by the art classroom as Mrs. Smith's classroom window has been obstructed by weeds and vines for a while now.
Bring gloves, tools, and a water bottle. No bathroom access will be available.

FWES Updates:
-
Safety Support Needed: Only Use Parking Spots in Lower Lot: If you are coming to FWES to pick up your child as a “Walker” but you drive to the campus; you MUST park in a parking spot in the lower lot and walk to meet your student. Student safety is our first priority and as there is no supervision or crosswalk available to the lower lot, it is not safe for your child or other students when families do not park in designated spaces.
-
Students are dismissed at 3:40pm and families should be ready to meet them on the sidewalk at that time- not waiting in the parking lot.
-
Students who have permission to leave campus and walk without an adult will be required to remain on the sidewalk and walk to the crossing guard- and not allowed to enter the parking lot to meet a parent.
-
Thank you for your cooperation in keeping all students and pedestrians at FWES safe at dismissal each day!

Cary Chamber of Commerce Honor A Teacher Nominations- “Teaching Excellence”
Excellence in teaching – we know it when we see it. It can be the teacher who spends extra time with the students who need it most, or the teacher who is creative enough to inspire a real love of learning in a student. Perhaps it’s a teacher who cares enough to be involved with their students beyond the classroom. Whatever their methods, certain teachers make a real impact on students and their learning abilities.
We would like to recognize one such teacher and we need your help. The Cary Chamber of Commerce has been a leader in supporting education in our community through numerous programs and activities. One of the most critical needs of Wake County schools is that of attracting and retaining the best classroom teachers. With the Cary Chamber of Commerce's Honor a Teacher Program we hope to help our school system in meeting that challenge.
Building on the success of the Discovery Award first sponsored by the Ashworth family in 1991, followed by the Clara Knoll Award in 2000 by Barry and DJ Mitsch, the Cary Chamber has secured sponsors to develop a teaching awards program for all schools in the Cary Area.
We are asking our community to nominate teachers for this award. Included with your nomination, please describe why you feel this particular teacher deserves this award. Nominations must be submitted no later than Friday, February 17 at 5:00pm. These nominations will then be narrowed down to finalists that will be interviewed by a designated committee.
Use the link below to nominate a deserving FWES Teacher:)

She knows our students, school routines and procedures and is excited to be with us through the end of the year. Visitors for Lunch- Important Safety Reminder- We love having families come to have lunch with your student at school. It is such a special time for the student and we’d encourage all parents to try to come at least once in the school year. As a reminder, you do not have to be a registered volunteer to come for lunch- however, what that means is that you may ONLY take your student to a picnic table or tables in the hall for lunch. Additional friends from a classroom cannot join you for lunch. You are welcome to sit at the tables with your student and their friends in the cafeteria. Thank you for your cooperation!

Cary Chamber Honor a Teacher Nomination 2023
Nominations are accepted until 5:00pm on February 17, 2023.

In the last month we have welcomed almost 20 new students and families to our school community. We are happy to have you with us and please reach out to your teacher and/or the front office if you have questions or need support.
Some important documents that may assist you in your transition to FWES include:

FWES School Supply List 2022-23 by grade level
WCPSS Parent/Student Handbook 2022-23
FWES Family/Student Handbook 2022-23- version 10-20-2022

FWES Birthday Celebration Options- January Reminder (please read as no food is allowed)
FWES Family Resources for 2022-23
FWES Transportation Procedures and Information
FWES Dismissal Reminders:
Changing Dismissal Transportation:
**Any and ALL transportation changes must be communicated in writing with your child’s teacher. While email, Dojo and Talking Points work very well for most communications- please note that if your child’s teacher is out at a training or out sick, no one will see or read your message.
The best option is to write a hand written note and send it to school with your child if their transportation will change in the afternoon- that allows any adult in the classroom to get the message and plan for the need.
**Regular and consistent dismissal processes for students is the best way for students and teachers to manage daily dismissal and ensure the safe and correct dismissal of all students. Please avoid changing dismissal patterns on a daily basis for the well being of your student and the student’s safety at dismissal.
Dismissal Reminders:
-
Buses and other District Vehicles- Thank you for your patience and understanding when there are route changes that result in a late arrival home for your student. The district is working to fill vacancies and monitor arrival times, but we know it has been very late for some students and families.
-
Please follow our Twitter Bus Feed FWES Family Student Handbook 2022-23 (10-20-2022).pdf
-
There is usually only one person in the office to answer the door, phone calls and communicate with staff waiting with students on buses. There will be times when no one can answer and your patience continues to be appreciated.
-
-
Please download Here Comes the Bus to see your child’s bus GPS in live time to know when to expect the bus to arrive with your child at home.
-
Reminder- Kindergartners and 1st Graders MUST have an adult at the bus stop or the drive will not let them exit the bus and will then bring them back to the school.
-
-
-
Walkers- Walkers need to be met at the front of the school no later than 3:45pm in the afternoon. Students who have not connected with an adult by 3:45pm will be sent back to class and adults arriving will be required to show photo ID and sign out the student in the office.
-
The lower parking lot is for bus traffic only- if spaces are not available, cars may not block the flow of traffic for buses to dismiss. Please do not park unless there is an available space.
-
*Regular late arrival to walkers may result in families being required to use carpool
-
-
Carpool-
-
Cars MUST display the FWES Carpool Tag until your child is loaded! Please do not take the tag down after Mr. Eller radio’s your number. Our safety patrol and staff on duty will not allow a student into a car without a carpool #.
-
If you do not have a tag, you will be required to go to the office WITH a photo ID
-
-
Carpool Ends at 4:10pm- As with walkers, if you are going to use carpool, please arrive at FWES no later than 4:09PM to pick up your student.
-
No Left Turn at FWES Entrance during Arrival and Dismissal
-
Please review the Carpool Procedures Video to be reminded about the procedures and Cary Police recommendation to prohibit left turns into the FWES campus during arrival and dismissal. Thank you!

Finishing the 1st Semester in 3 weeks!
We will hit the middle of the school year on January 26, 2023. Now that we are back to school consistently in January, our amazing teachers will begin completing end of quarter assessments along with Middle of Year (MOY) benchmarks in Reading and Math for all students. Every piece of data that is collected is used by teachers and teams to plan lessons to meet the needs of the students.
Thank you for returning to a routine that involves school and school practice/homework activities:
-
Arriving on time to school and staying until dismissal
-
Coming to school prepared with materials needed for learning
-
Completing at least 1 Dreambox lesson a day on the Chromebook (more is better, but at least 1 a day will support positive growth for students)
-
Reading nightly for at least 20 minutes

Winter Break December 22-January 2, 2023- Students and Staff return on Tuesday, January 3, 2023!
FWES Friday Folder:
Annually, FWES celebrates the gift that lasts a lifetime in December- the Gift of Reading! Beginning December 12th- each classroom will designate 30 minutes of time for students to read self-selected books and teachers will read, too. For younger grades, this time might include read alouds and listening to stories, too. The only homework during the gift of reading is to read at least 20 minutes each night and record that time on a reading log (a gift to families, too:) Each day will have a theme experience to add an element of fun, too!
A hard copy of the theme days will be sent home, along with a reading log, on Friday, December 9th. Returned completed reading logs/online verification form will enter student names into a drawing to win books to take home to enjoy over winter break.
Gift of Reading; Reading Log 2022
Registered volunteers will be invited to join classrooms on Thursday, December 15th during a designated hour block to read to the class or small group of students. Please use this form to express your interest in coming in to read as part of the Gift of Reading.
Gift of Reading Guest Reader- Thursday, December 15, 2022 Must sign up by December 12th!!!!
Bedtime Stories:
Wednesday, December 14
Join Ms. Zaccardi tonight at 7 pm for a Bedtime Story! Bring your stuffed animal and snuggle up in a cozy spot to hear a read aloud. Click on https://bit.ly/FWESbedtime to join. You’ll be able to view it anytime from 7 pm until Monday morning (12/19). See you at bedtime!
NO LEFT TURN INTO FARMINGTON WOODS DURING ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL
Please be reminded that there should be no left turn into or out of the FWES driveway during arrival and dismissal. Unfortunately the tree company who removed the large tree that fell during the hurricane ran over our sign… but we are working to replace.
For the safety of ALL, especially pedestrians, the Cary Police Department indicates there should be no left turns. The crossing guard is not a traffic policemen and cannot direct traffic, so we really need our FWES families to follow the procedures. Cary Police has been notified of the concerns shared by many drivers and pedestrian families and may be patrolling the area in the next several school weeks.
Thank you for contributing to the safe arrival and dismissal of our students and families!
Permission Forms for Semester GOLD Celebration were sent home today

New flat panel interactive screens are arriving next week to FWES and will be installed in classrooms:) This WCPSS provided technology is a welcome upgrade as our projectors, Promethean Boards and other tools currently in place are not working consistently for teachers. FWES PTA Global Fun Run Fund Raiser begins Monday! One of the reasons our PTA was able to support the school's need for projection devices the last two years- when we did not have funding or resources to replace devices is due to their fund raising efforts. The Global Fun Run event is the primary fund raiser for the FWES PTA and funds raised support projects and needs throughout the school community and to support the IB mission and School vision. Thank you for your support of our PTA as a partner in supporting our school's success!

PTA Reflections Entries Due (see more info below)
FWES Updates and Information:
Reminder- Photo ID is ALWAYS required for entry into the building
As we send our thoughts to those families who lost loved ones last night in our community due to violence, it is important to revisit and remember that our school will do all we can to maintain safety of our campus for students and staff.
Beginning late last year after another horrific event, it was recommended that schools require ID before entry is allowed to maintain safety. At FWES there is nothing more important than the safety of our wonderful school family and we took that recommendation seriously- and continue to do so each day.
Thank you for your cooperation with office staff who may recognize you but are checking ID for EACH and EVERY person before allowing entry as a process for the safety of your student and all others.
Hug your family close this weekend!

The contest begins at the school level. FWES students enter in the appropriate division: Primary (PreK-2nd), Intermediate (3rd -5th) or Special Artist (ECS). Winning art will move up to County level competition, then potentially to State and Nationals! All submissions will be made digitally and entries are due by Oct 28, 2022. Many thanks offered to all of you who have reached out about my status as a Finalist for WCPSS Principal of the Year. While I was not the chosen winner at the event Thursday evening, I can tell you I believe I won 12 years ago when I was appointed the principal of Farmington Woods IB/PYP Magnet Elementary. Our school is such a special place and each day it is a joy to come to work! The staff welcomed me this morning and then there was a pom pom parade after the news where I got to see all students- and was able to hold back my tears of joy until the end- as they held signs and cheered for me. There is no luckier principal than me! Thank you all so much for your support- it is truly a community effort!
With love and appreciation, Winston Pierce
Well before I was selected for this honor and the event date was known, I scheduled a brief vacation- so while it truly is a joy to come to FWES each day- I will be away from the building M-W of next week and return on October 13th. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding!

From Lost and Found committee:
With the hustle and bustle of the school day students tend to misplace some of their belongings. Items that have been left behind get placed in our Lost and Found. Our Lost and Found is getting quite full with items that have been misplaced, including many items from last year!
We would like to ask you all to have your student visit the lost and found area this week and next to see if their belongings are there.
The deadline to pick up items remaining in the lost and found is 10/7. After this date remaining items will be donated to make room for new items.

Yom Kippur
Yom Kippur—the Day of Atonement—is considered the most important holiday in the Jewish faith. It’s a high holiday that follows Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. This year, it was observed from sundown Tuesday to sundown Wednesday.
What to say? Even if you’re not Jewish, it is respectful to share well wishes to your friends and colleagues who do observe. It’s a time of fasting, thinking, and self-examination, so it’s not exactly a “happy holiday.” A simple Yom Kippur greeting: "Have an easy fast"

FWES Friday Folder Updates and Information:
Thank you Mrs. Grice! We are so thankful that Mrs. Grice has been part of the Farmington Woods community for almost 40 years. She started as a dedicated volunteer and then became the Media Specialist. She has helped countless children find books that became their favorites and encouraged others to dive into content to do research on their inquiries. In addition, she has been a mentor, sounding board and resource to staff in so many ways.
Mrs. Grice is retiring on Friday, September 30th and while she will miss this place that is like a 2nd home; she is looking forward to spending more time with her family and grandchildren.
We appreciate her work and are excited for her to begin a new book series with this next chapter!
*Mrs. Grice respectfully does not want a large celebration or send off and as a school we will respect her wishes. If your family would like to wish her well and thank her for the difference she has made, please consider donating a book in her honor to the Inquiry Center or send cards, notes and/or pictures that she can add to her home library to remind her of the difference she has made for so many!
College Shirt Day! IB learners never stop learning and many of our IB learners will continue learning after high school graduation in college. To begin those conversations and learn about the many college options, FWES will sponsor College Shirt Day the last Friday of every month. We encourage our staff and students to share college shirts and to talk about them with others.
Of course FWES spirit wear is also welcomed on any Friday, too!

Hispanic Heritage Month- As FWES celebrates the wonderful diversity of our school community, we will be recognizing Hispanic Heritage Month on the FWES News with information and student sharings. Classroom will also incorporate learning experiences, too. The link above provides families with some information and activities that can be done at home to learn together about the Hispanic Culture- have fun with it the next month!
Pencil Box open Tues and Thurs beginning September 20th! Our school has a pencil box that is open between 8:45-9:05am each Tuesday and Thursday. The Pencil Box has school supplies like pencils, erasers, notepads and other items that are school appropriate. Prices run from $.25 to $3.00 (for larger items like pencil pouches). It is exciting for students to shop for their preferred items to add to their classroom school supplies:)
Notes for the Pencil Box:
-
Cash only is accepted for purchase
-
Students must be in the line for shopping by 9:05am- those after 9:05am will be sent to their classroom and need to try to arrive earlier another day
-
The initial several weeks typically create long lines and there can be many students who don’t get a chance to shop due to the length of the line but rest assured that the lines get shorter and the novelty wears off and there are still 33 more weeks of shopping left in our school year at the Pencil Box!
-
-
If items become a distraction in the classroom- teachers may as students to put them in the bookbag and keep them at home- such as a mobile phone shaped eraser that a student might pretend talk on during the math lesson:)
Welcome Kindergarten Lunch Visitors! We have now had our two weeks to establish procedures and routines with our kindergartners and would welcome visitors to join them for lunch at the class assigned lunch time:)
Lunch Visitor Reminders:
-
For Kindergarten visitors- if your child is struggling with separation and/or the length of the school day…. We find that having a visitor at lunch DOES NOT HELP and we ask that you wait until your child is more prepared for your visit. It may be important for all kindergartners that you explain the rules from Mrs. Pierce- that you can meet them in the cafeteria and will have to leave the cafeteria when they line up to go with their teacher back to the classroom- to help any misunderstanding by our students. Tell them is it Mrs. Pierce’s rule to put it on me:)
-
ID will be required to enter the building
-
All visitors must sign in at the office and wear the visitor badge visible while in the building
-
Lunch visitors may only go to the office and cafeteria- lunch visitors may not go to the classroom before or after lunch
-
Lunch visitors can join their student at the lunch tables or take THEIR student outside to a picnic table or eat at a tall table in the lobby. No other students may go with a family to eat lunch outside of the cafeteria.
-
The cafeteria is not equipped due to supply shortages to feed visitors for lunch. Please plan to bring your own lunch from home.

Lunch Visitors (1st-5th September 12th and Kinder, September 19th)- We have been working for the last two weeks with our 1st-5th graders to establish routines and procedures in the cafeteria. We are ready to invite families to join us for lunch as your schedule might allow for 1st-5th graders only. Kindergarten families can begin the week of September 19th.
Some lunch visitor reminders:
-
You must sign in at the office and you are only allowed to walk to the cafeteria. Volunteer clearance is not required for a lunch visit- so all are welcome- just know you must only go to the cafeteria to meet the class and leave from there- you may not go to the classroom before or after lunch.
-
There is no option for adults to purchase lunch in the cafeteria at this time- so please bring your own lunch for your visit. You may bring a lunch for your child, too.
-
No food may be brought to be shared with other students.
-
-
Families may sit at the class assigned table in the cafeteria or may choose to take YOUR student out to the picnic tables outside the cafeteria to have lunch.
-
No other students may accompany you outside.
-
Thank you for your cooperation and we hope you can join us soon!

And - if something comes up and you can't make your weekly watering commitment, no problem! Just let us know as soon as you know and we will arrange for coverage - or arrange for a swap. FWES Friday Folder Updates and Information
FWES School Day Security Update:
It is our responsibility to keep our campus secure and safe each day. As we approach the 1st day of school, it is important to review and consider how we can work together to keep our campus safe each day.
Procedures at FWES for 2022-23:
-
FWES has had an additional 40 security cameras installed during the summer to allow maximum surveillance of indoor and outdoor campus areas.
-
Photo ID will be required for ALL visitors before being allowed access to the building. Please make sure you bring a photo ID when you visit FWES this year!
-
Photo ID will be required at the door before entry is allowed for signing students in/out from school at the front office.
-
During dismissal, families without carpool tags or who are late to pick up students from walkers and/or carpool must show photo ID to have a student signed out. Please bring ID when coming to FWES for dismissal.
-
-
Entry to the building while waiting on dismissal walkers will not be allowed. Please make sure bathroom needs for young children are taken care of before coming for dismissal.
Thank you for your cooperation with school staff each day as we maintain a secure campus for students and staff!
Updated Technology Security, too:
-
Email firewalls have been blocking email delivery to many school staff, particularly emails generated from yahoo.com accounts and organizations to who send large batches of email through a program. If you send an email and do not hear from a staff member in 48 hours, please try to send again and call the school to check on it:) There are several steps needed to allow emails that get blocked to be able to go through- so your patience is appreciated.
-
No streaming outside of building :( In the 2022-23 school year, the FWES Morning News can no longer be streamed outside of our in school network. If you want to watch the news it will be broadcast in the Lobby each morning!
Transportation Information- procedures with video links to show process!
FWES Walker Permission for 2022-23 (2nd-5th grade only)- complete if your child is a walker after school and has permission to leave campus without being with an adult to walk home. Complete no later than Sunday, August 28th at 12:00noon!
Got Questions Sessions- If you have questions or inquiries about FWES to start the year, please join us at one of our Got Questions Sessions this week to get a live school team member to assist you. These sessions are not intended to be conferences, but a way to get answers to your quick questions.
Habrá intérpretes disponibles en cada sesión.
Birthdays at School Reminder: A quick reminder that birthdays are not celebrated during the school day. Please do not send cupcakes or cookies or other items to school for your child’s birthday.
FWES is a Nationally Certified Magnet School!
Excited to share that FWES has once again is proud to announce that it has been recognized as a nationally certified magnet school. Bus Routes for the 2022-23 school year will be posted on Friday, August 19, 2022. There will be support available related to bus routes at both Open House Events on August 25 and 26 at FWES for questions.
Bus Cautions and Reminders: There is a shortage of bus drivers, so many routes have been adjusted to try to accommodate all riders- your bus route and stop may be different this year. In addition, due to many buses across the district making two runs (pick up students- drop them off- then back to FWES to get a 2nd route)- the TIMES for AM and PM may be adjusted significantly for your bus. There is also the chance that on some days, there may not be a driver for a route. Consider your back-up plan if you are notified that your students’ route will not run so we can still see them at school!
*Changes may be made before August 29th- so please check regularly!

FWES PTA Updates and Information for Families:

FWES needs a new representative to participate with Mrs. Pierce and report back to the PTA and families from the 4 scheduled meetings in 2022-23 (Sept. 13, Oct. 24, Jan. 23 and March 20).
If you are interested, please read the guidelines from WCPSS School Board policy linked below AND email Sarah Barrett, PTA President at president@fwespta.org by September 1st to share your interest and confirm your understanding of the attendance requirements and responsibilities. We will begin work in September to organize and determine appropriate details and would hope that clubs could begin in mid-late October.

Mrs. Pierce’s Message (click for video message summarizing Friday Folder Information)
*Note that Google Meet had a glitch and it cut off right at the end of the PTA info. I added my concluding comments below:)
Please be aware that we are currently updating all information and documents for the 22-23 school year. There are MANY updates due to the lifting of COVID procedures and restrictions and these updates take time. Our goal is to have as much updated as possible and loaded to the FWES Website by August 1st; however, we will load them as they are ready so you can check the website throughout July.
Before School Registration is with the Taylor YMCA and the program and registration information is in the Parent section of the FWES Website and available now.
After School Registration materials are being updated for 2022-23 and dates for registration at FWES are being determined. We will have all of that information available by August 1st. There will be an online "line up" to register process and then in person days prior to the start of the school year (likely the week of August 8th) for bringing payment and registration documents. The program does require paper completion of documents and a check/money order, so registration must be in person.
Be sure to follow us on Twitter @fwesibpyp to meet the new staff joining our team this year. We will start sharing their photos and information next week!

Apply for free and reduced-price school meals for 2022-23
- All students currently receive free school meals supported by federal funding due to the pandemic. This funding is set to end on June 30, 2022. In order to receive free or reduced-price meals for next school year, families need to submit a meal benefits application.
- All families must complete an application for the 2022-2023 school year starting July 1 in order to receive benefits. Please allow 10 business days for processing.
- K-5 Breakfast $1.50 and lunch $3.00
- 6-12 Breakfast $1.75 and lunch $3.25
Volunteers in 2022-23-
All approved volunteers in the 2021-22 school year do NOT need to reactivate to volunteer in 22-23. If you are an approved volunteer- you received an email from Mrs. Pierce on Thursday, July 7, 2022 sharing your status with you.
If you DID NOT get an email from Mrs. Pierce- you are not yet an approved registered volunteer and will need to complete the process to be a volunteer.
The new system takes longer than in prior years, so those family members interested in getting involved early- like PTA help with Open House, PTA projects, classroom extra hands, library helpers, etc… should register during the summer months if at all possible.
Registration must be completed at a WCPSS Work Location, like FWES or another school or central office if it is closer to your home or work. Please review FWES Office Hours before planning a trip to the school to register.
*Note that WCPSS Employees are also required to register if they plan to volunteer in a school with their personal children.
WCPSS Volunteer Information for 2022-23
Club Sponsor Interest for 2022-23- We are hoping to get some clubs up and running again in the 2022-23 school year. We have been fortunate in the past to have parent and grandparent volunteers give their time to provide an inquiry experience to our students before or after school. Please review the information in the link and let us know if you would be interested in this wonderful volunteer opportunity. Filling out the form is not a commitment but we will reach back out in September with all the details to begin to confirm with all those who are interested. We will aim to begin clubs mid to late October, 2022.
*If you are not an approved volunteer and want to help with clubs- please see info above about Volunteer Registration.

Participate International Teachers- Furniture or Household Goods Donations
I am very excited to share that we will be welcoming 3 new Participate (formerly VIF) teachers to our staff for the 2022-23 school year. These teachers are international teachers who obtain NC Teaching Licensure and a specialized work visa to travel, live and teach in the United States. We are welcoming teachers from Scotland, The Bahamas and Honduras next year!
These teachers will arrive on August 5th to NC with two suitcases…. And then have to begin the process of finding a place to live, getting a drivers license/bank account/social security number AND figuring out how to set up a household (furniture, kitchen supplies, towels, etc.) from scratch. All of this and be ready to start work at FWES on August 17th.
We have had luck in the past in letting our school community know that we will be taking gently used household items in good condition to share with our new teachers to help them get on their feet. Feel free to share the need with your neighbors and friends if they are cleaning out, too- but a reminder we are not a thrift store and only need good condition and clean items. We invite you (or your friends) to bring it to FWES and let us store it in the cafeteria this summer until our teachers arrive. Please call the office (919-460-3469) before coming or to schedule a drop off time so we have someone present. If you cannot come between 8:30am-3:30pm- we can set up an evening or weekend drop off time, too.
- Used Items in good condition to consider donating:
- Furniture (living room, dining room, office/desk/chair, dresser/chest, side tables- no mattresses please)
- Lamps, Mirrors, Wall Art
- Clean Dishes, Glassware and Silverware
- Clean Pots, Baking Pans and Utensils
- Good CLEAN Condition counter appliances (Coffee Maker, Electric Kettle, Toaster, etc.)
FWES Looking for a full time K-5 Instructional Assistant- Use the WCPSS Applitrack system to let us know if you might be interested or if you know someone great- send them our way! Thanks!
