First Day of 2021-22 School Year for Multi-Track Year-Round Schools is July 8
It’s beginning to look a lot more like pre-pandemic times, as 35 multi-track year-round schools open their doors on July 8 to the largest numbers of students attending school in person since March 2020.
While schools will certainly be full of energy and excitement for the 2021-22 school year, certain health guidelines will remain in effect, including the requirement to wear face coverings indoors.
Approximately 94 percent of students will be attending school in person once all schools are in session by late August. This is by far more than at any time since March 2020.
Approximately 10,000 of the district’s 160,000 students are registered for the WCPSS Virtual Academy for 2021-22. This compares to a high of 85,500 during the 2020-21 school year.
Here are additional 2021-22 start dates for schools on various calendars.
- Modified-calendar schools - Monday, July 26
- Track 4 year-round schools - Monday, Aug. 2
- Leadership academies - Wednesday, Aug. 4.
- Early Colleges - Thursday, Aug. 5 and Monday, Aug. 10
- Traditional-calendar schools - Monday, Aug. 23.
To note for the 2021-22 school year:
- Due to current health guidelines, students, staff and visitors will be required to wear face coverings indoors on days that students are in school buildings.
- Face coverings also are required on school buses and vendor transportation.
- Face coverings are optional for outdoor activities for everyone.
- The USDA has approved that all meals will be served free of charge to all students ages 18 and under nationwide during the 2021-22 school year. This includes breakfast and lunch.
- Big Bus Food Truck will continue services this summer.
- Curbside meals will continue through the summer and as we near the opening of traditional calendar schools, we plan to transition to select regional school locations for the 2021-22 school year for Virtual Academy students and other children in the community age 18 and younger.
- Families should be familiar with students’ bus routes.
- The Here Comes the Bus app helps families with determining when the bus will arrive and if there is a substitute driver.
- There will be approximately 475 WCPSS yellow school buses on Wake County roads the morning of July 8, along with thousands of students waiting at bus stops, so we ask everyone to take extra care making their way to work.
