Winter Break Message from Superintendent Cathy Moore
December 20, 2019
Wake County Public School System Parents,
As we approach the well-deserved winter break, I would like to share some exciting news about a wonderful accomplishment. On Dec. 13, we announced that a record number of our teachers - 158 - have achieved national board certification this year.
This is not an easy achievement. Only about one-third of teachers who attempt board certification are successful the first time they apply. The application process involves hundreds of hours of intense analysis to determine how specific teaching practices benefit students.
In WCPSS, we are extremely proud of our 11,000 teachers. They are caring and accomplished. Many of our teachers have sought higher education, most of them while teaching full time. Nearly four in 10 of our teachers have earned master’s degrees. Some have doctorates.
Our teachers are called upon to speak at local, regional, state and national gatherings featuring experts in various fields of education. And all of our teachers are encouraged to work together collaboratively to share ideas and to embolden their students’ collective learning experiences.
Perhaps most importantly, there are thousands of teachers who will be remembered fondly – even loved – by your children for the rest of their lives. Because they have had the kind of effect that will, indeed, last a lifetime.
It’s the time of year when we reflect on the people and ideas we most cherish. Teachers are at the top of my list, right next to my family. Why? Because as a former teacher myself, I know firsthand what motivates our educators. I know how hard they work. And I know how determined they are to make sure your child “gets it.”
Working together with you, I have no doubt your children will grow and thrive.
Please have a safe and happy holiday season!
