Core Recommendations 2020-21
The purpose of the Core Recommendation Matrix is to identify the most appropriate level(s) for courses where more than one level is offered (i.e. academic / honors / AP-IB.
Semester 1 grades and the Core Recommendation Matrix determine whether an administrative request or teacher recommendation is appropriate for each student.
- For students whose semester 1 grade lies in a band on the core recommendation matrix that would indicate a single appropriate next level, an administrative request for that course/level will be made on behalf of the student. (Example: a current freshmen who earns a 95% for semester 1 in academic English I will have an administrative request for honors English II entered into PowerSchools.)
- For students whose S1 grade lies in a band that would indicate more than one appropriate next level, teachers will recommend for BOTH levels and the student will choose which level to request during the course request window. (Example: a current sophomore who earns a 90% for semester one in Honors English II will be recommended by their English II teacher for Honors English III, and AP Language. During the course request window, students will request either the Honors or AP level.)
Students whose Final course grade differs significantly from their Semester 1 grade may have their course request updated to reflect this final grade and notified by email of the change.
Students who would like to request a course in which their Semester 1 or Final grade is outside the required grade boundaries published on the Core Recommendation Matrix must complete the Student Initiated Course Level Waiver form and return to student services.
Teachers who would like a student to be able to request a course in which the student’s Semester 1 or Final grade is outside the required grade boundaries published on the Core Recommendation Matrix should provide the student with a Teacher Initiated Course Level Waiver form which the student may complete and return to student services.
