    Monday Memo 1-27-2020 – Good evening Garner Nation; this is Principal Carter Hillman with a Monday Memo:

     

    • This Wednesday, January 29th is a Protected Teacher Workday.  School is closed to students on that day.
    • Attention students and parents:  The Annual GMHS Trojan’s 4-A-Cure St. Baldrick’s Event is scheduled for this Friday, January 31st, starting at 4:30 PM.
    • The ASVAB Exam will be given next Wednesday, February 5th for students in grades 10 through 12.  The ASVAB is for students interested in the military, seeking practice for the SAT/ACT exams or Career Exploration.  Signup is required and can be found on the GMHS website, under Career Services.
    • There will be a Student Senate meeting next Thursday, February 6th, starting at 1:50 PM in the cafeteria
    • Senior and Senior Parents: Do you have seniors who will be seeking a part-time or full-time job after they graduate?  Then the Trojan Career Prep program is for them.  Students will have the opportunity to create a professional resume, learn job readiness skills from professionals in the community during our Garner Career Prep Program, and attend the Class of 2020 Job Fair this April.  To learn more, go to the GMHS website, look under Career Services.  Permission forms are available in Room 1101 and are due by next Friday, February 7th.
    • On Saturday, February 8th, from 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM, The Princeton Review will be at the Southeast Regional Library in Garner to give a FREE practice ACT exam for students, ages 16 and over.  A Princeton Review proctor will be present.  After the exam students will receive a comprehensive score report detailing their strengths and weaknesses.  Seating is limited.  Interested students must register through the Princeton Review website.  If a student has not registered, they will not be able to take the test.  The GMHS Media Center can provide the registration link to students.
    • Parents:  Do you have a student who has a business idea that they would like to develop or who is already an entrepreneur and would like to compete for prizes?  Join us for the GMHS’ first Business Pitch Competition, which is similar to the TV show, Shark Tank.  Students will have the opportunity to work with local entrepreneurs to refine their business idea, pitch their idea to local business owners and win prizes.  Go to the GMHS website, under Career Services to learn more and to register.  Sessions start next Tuesday, February 4th.

    • Attention Dance Students: Auditions for “Next Level” dance classes for the 2020-2021 school year will take place during classes on Wednesday and Thursday, January 22nd and 23rd.
    • Students: Asheboro Applications are due this Friday, January 24th by 2:30 PM.
    • Semester final exams and year-long course midterms are scheduled starting today, Tuesday, January 21st, and running through Monday, January 27th.

Join us for GMHS' first Business Pitch Competition, which is similar to the TV Show Shark Tank. Students will have the opportunity to work with local professionals to refine their business idea, pitch their idea to local business owners and win prizes.     • The GMHS Magnet Theme Showcase is scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday, January 14th, from 6:30 to 8:00 PM.
    • Attention Sophomores: Sophomore meeting will take place this Wednesday and Thursday, January 15th and 16th, during the school day in the auditorium.
    • Seniors and Senior Parents:  The $10,000.00 SECU People Helping People Scholarship Application has been posted on the GMHS website.  One student at GMHS will win this scholarship.  Please visit the scholarship page for more details.  The deadline for this application is Monday, January 20th.  See Stacy Davidson in student services for questions or further details.

    • Workshops for the GMHS spring musical, Carousel, will occur this Tuesday and Thursday, November 19th and 21st.  These workshops are required if you intend on auditioning.  Please meet in the auditorium at 2:30 PM on Tuesday.  Workshops will last no later than 3:30 PM.  You must attend both days.  See Mrs. Hazelrigg or Mr. Wanamaker with questions or if you cannot attend the workshops.  Tech Crew applications for the musical will be available in the auditorium this Thursday, November 21st and are due back by Wednesday, December 4th. 
    • The Trojan Business Alliance is hosting its Annual Reality of Money event for 10th grade students this Tuesday, November 19th in the auxiliary gym.

    Tuesday Memo 11-12-2019 – Good evening Garner Nation; this is Principal Carter Hillman with a Tuesday Memo:

     

    • The GMHS Fine Arts Department is proud to announces the Fall Play, William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.  Patron night will be this Wednesday, November 13th.  Public performances will be this Thursday, November 14th through Saturday, November 16th.  The play begins at 7:00 PM in the auditorium.  Cost of admission is $7.00 per ticket.  Please note on Friday, November 15th, there is a home football playoff game.  It is recommended that those coming to the play park in the staff parking lot located by the school cafeteria.  That entrance will be opened.
    • The Garner Community Stars on Stage Event is scheduled for tomorrow, Wednesday, November 13th, at South Garner auditorium, starting at 6:30 PM.  This event bring together the talents of all Garner schools.  It's a great evening of music and entertainment.
    • All Senior casual and formal portrait proofs must be selected for the yearbook by this Thursday, November 14th or the computer will randomly select it.  If you have difficulty selecting proofs on Prestige Portraits website, students can stop by Mrs. Easton’s classroom, Room 3110, before or after school to make their selections.
    • Career Services will be hosting an information session for parents and students to learn more about the NC Triangle Apprenticeship Program this Thursday, November 14 at 9:15 AM at GMHS in Room 1301.  This program provides students with the opportunity to gain work experience and college degree.  If your student likes to work with their hands, then this program may be for them.  Parents and Students are encouraged to attend. 
    • The Garner Trojan Football team will host a first round State playoff game this Friday, November 15th, against Wakefield.  Game time is 7:30 PM and the cost of admissions is $8.00.  No Garner passes or teacher passes will be accepted for State playoff games.
    • The Trojan Business Alliance is hosting its Annual Reality of Money event for 10th grade students next Tuesday, November 19th, and we need volunteers to help the students navigate purchasing decisions.  Our volunteers enjoy this activity as much as the students.  Please go to the Career Services webpage to access the signup.

    • Freshmen Parents and Students: Freshmen will be receiving the Signs of Suicide (SOS) curriculum in Healthful Living classes this week through Wednesday, October 30th.  If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Creecy in Student Services.
    • This past weekend the GMHS Marching Band competed in their last competition of the season at Corinth Holders High School.  21 Bands competed overall with 6 bands competing in the 2A category.  In 2A your Mighty Marching Trojans took 1st place in Visual Performance, 3rd Place in General Effect, and 2nd Place overall.  Congratulations to the Mighty Marching Trojans on a successful season.
    • The BETA Club Induction Ceremony is scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday, October 29th, starting at 7:00 PM in the auditorium.
    • Sophomores and Sophomore Parents:  All 10th grade students will take the state-mandated PreACT this Wednesday, October 30th.  Students with IEPs or 504 plans will have received a letter last week that must be signed and returned if the student wishes to use accommodations on this practice exam.  Please contact Ms. Ireland with any questions regarding the PreACT.
    • The GMHS Fine Arts Department is proud to announce its Fall Band Concert this, Wednesday, October 30th, at 7:00 PM in the auditorium. 
    • Thursday, October 31st is a makeup day for earlier inclement weather; it is a regular school day for students and staff.  This day will be an A day on the schedule.
    • Attention students: Those who are planning to dress up on Thursday, October 31st need to keep in mind that outfits must follow the WCPSS Dress Code Policy.  No masks or full-face paint will be allowed on campus.
    • Friday, November 1st is an Unprotected Teacher Workday.  There is no school for students on that day.
    • There will be a GMHS Student Government meeting on Thursday, November 7th, starting at 1:50 PM in the school cafeteria.
    • There will be no school on Monday, November 11th, due to the Veteran’s Day Holiday.  School will be closed for students and staff.
    • The Trojan Business Alliance is hosting our Annual Reality of Money event for 10th grade students on Tuesday, November 19th, and are in need of volunteers to help the students navigate purchasing decisions.  Volunteers enjoy this activity as much as the students.  Please go to the Career Services webpage to access the signup.
