    Monday Memo 10-0142019 – Good evening Garner Nation; this is Principal Carter Hillman with a Monday Memo:

     

    • Attention Parents:  For the safety of your students, you are reminded that student drop-off, in the morning, is from the right lane only.  Dropping your students off in the left lane has students walking through traffic.  Both lanes are assessible for pickup in the afternoon.  Thank you for your cooperation.
    • This past Saturday the Mighty Marching Trojans traveled to Jacksonville to compete in the 22nd Annual White Oak High School Band Classic.  The group competed in the 2AA category against three other high schools.  They took 2nd place in Percussion, Visual Performance and Music, as well as in the Drum Major category.  Congratulations to the Mighty Marching Trojans.  This Saturday they will be participating in the Fuquay Varina Festival of Bands.
    • Attention students:  If you have signed up for PSAT or ASVAB testing, both will take place this Wednesday, October 16th.  The PSAT will at 7:30 AM in the auxiliary gym.  ASVAB testing will begin at 7:20 AM in the School Cafeteria.
    • Seniors:  Senior portrait makeup day will be this Wednesday, October 16th in the media center.   During this session, seniors will take their drape and casual photos.  This is the only makeup day.  Yearbook photos are free, but they will offer $15.00 session fee at the time of pictures.  This is the sitting fee for more poses and to have proofs sent home.  All forms or payment will be available.  Please remember, all senior photos must go through Prestige portraits for the yearbook so plan accordingly.  Appointment times will be listed in the main lobby the week of pictures.
    • Seniors:  All senior quotes are due this Friday, October 18th.  Students can find QR codes in the common areas on each floor to complete the form.  For further information, please contact Mrs. Easton.
    • The BETA Club will be practicing for its Induction Ceremony on Tuesday, October 22nd, starting at 2:30 PM in the Auditorium.
    • Attention Sophomores:  The second round of Personal Project meetings is scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, October 23rd and 24th, in the Media Center.
    • The Trojan Business Alliance is hosting our Annual Reality of Money event for 10th grade students on Tuesday, November 19th, and we need volunteers to help the students navigate purchasing decisions.  Our volunteers enjoy this activity as much as the students.  Please go to the Career Services webpage to access the signup.

    Monday Memo 10-07-2019 – Good evening Garner Nation; this is Principal Carter Hillman with a Monday Memo:

    • Attention junior and senior parents:  Schools are required to release families’ private information to military recruiters unless you “opt out” in writing asking the school not to release your child’s information to the military recruiters.  A military “opt out” form is located on the Career Service webpage.  Please print, complete, and return to Mrs. Daughenbaugh, Room 1101.
    • This past Saturday, the Mighty Marching Trojans completed in the Heart of Carolina Invitational Marching competition at Wakefield High School. They competed in the 1A Category against three other high schools.  The team won second place in Percussion and Visual Performance, first place in Music and General Effect, and they brought home first place, overall, in the Class 1A competions.  Congratualtion to our Mighty Marching Trojans on an outstanding performance.
    • Students:  Career Services would like for all students to complete the Career Interest Survey so you will have the opportunity to receive invitations to participate in activities and field trips that target your career interest.  The survey can be found on the Career Services webpage.
    • Students and Parents: The 2019-20 Homecoming week is scheduled for this week, October 6th through the 11th.  Please go to the GMHS webpage to review the school calendar for the listing of events for the week.
    • The GMHS Fine Arts Department is proud to announce the Improv Troupe Performance tomorrow evening, Tuesday, October 8th, starting at 7:00 PM in the Drama Studio.
    • Attention parents:  This Wednesday, October 9th is a Protected Teacher Workday.  There is no school for students on that day.
    • Picture retakes for underclassmen will be this Thursday, October 10th, from 7:30 to 1:00 PM in the small gym.  Forms will be provided during students’ 2A classes or in the front office.  Picture day schedules will be posted in the main lobby the week of pictures. Please see Mrs. Easton if you have further questions.
    • WRAL-TV and Explorer Post 5 will be having an information session for parents and students this Thursday, October 10th, at 7:00 PM at the WRAL-TV studios, located in Raleigh.  The program is for anyone between the ages of 14 and 20, who wants to gain valuable experience in television productions through hands-on clinics, workshops, and job shadowing.  Membership is limited and requires an application.  Please go to the Career Services webpage for more information.

    • Attention 10th and 11th graders: Governor’s School is a summer experience for academically accomplished students.  Students may attend and study in an academic or arts discipline.  This opportunity is available to current 11th grade students in all academic areas and current 10th grade students for the arts areas only.  The selection process is highly selective, and students must meet high academic standards to be eligible.  Students, in both grades, who are interested in learning more about Governor’s School and the eligibility process should see Mr. Bondurant or Mrs. Pettis in Student Services.  Please visit the Governor’s School website for more information:  www.ncgovschool.org.

    • Those interested in attending Homecoming planning meetings, there will be two meetings this week, tomorrow, Tuesday, September 24th, and Thursday, September 26th.  Both meetings will take place at 2:30 PM in Room 4118.
    • There will be a meeting for those interested in learning more about a trip to Peru.  The meet will take place this Thursday, September 26th, from 6:00 to 7:00 PM in the Media Center.
    • The NC State’s FLAMES Program for girls interested in Computer Science is accepting applications.  The program is free, but you must apply by this Saturday, September 29th.  If interested, please visit the GMHS Career Services webpage to apply and find out more about the program.
    • Attention students and parents, Monday, September 30th is a Protected Teacher workday.  There is no school for students on that day.
    • ChickTech is accepting nominations for girls interested in learning more about careers in Technology and Computer Science.  The program is free and nominations close on Tuesday, October 1st.  Find out more about the program on the Career Service webpage and see Mrs. Daughenbaugh, Room 1101, to be nominated.

    Tuesday Memo 9-3-2019 – Good evening Garner Nation; this is Principal Carter Hillman with a Tuesday Memo:

    • Attention Parents: Monday Memos will be broadcast, via phone, each Monday throughout the school year, unless there is no school on that day.  Monday Memo notifications can also be found on the GMHS webpage under “Principal Message” located in the blue ban under the rolling photos.
    • Students: Blue Crew T-Shirts are currently on sale.  Order forms are available in the front office.  Order forms must be returned to Mrs. Cottengim, Room 4118, no later than the end of the day, Monday, September 9th.
    • Improve Troupe auditions will be this Thursday and Friday, September 5th and 6th, after school in the auditorium, weather permitting.  Please see the Drama Twitter for updates or changes due to weather.  Also, an interest meeting for working backstage for the fall play will be this Friday, September 6th, after school.  The rain date for this meeting will be Tuesday, September 10th, same time and location.
    • Underclassmen Picture day will be next Monday, September 9th. Students should have received picture forms in their 2A classes.  Extra forms are available in the main office.
    • Auditions for the Fall Play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, will be September 10th, 11th, and 12th, after school in the auditorium.  See the Drama webpage or the Drama Twitter feed for more details.
    • ACE Mentor will host its information session for high school students interested in the field of Architecture, Construction Management or Engineering on Tuesday, September 10th at Athens Drive High School.  To learn more about the ACE Mentor Program, go to the GMHS webpage, look under Students, then Career Services.
    • Attention Junior and Junior Parents: Jostens will be on campus next Tuesday, September 10th, during lunch periods to take Class Ring orders.  If your student has not gotten a Class Ring Packet, they can pick one up in the front office.
    • Junior and Senior Parents:  Jostens will be hosting its Parent Night for Class Ring and Graduation Product orders on Tuesday, September 10th, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM in the GMHS Main Lobby area.
    • Seniors, Jostens will return to campus on Wednesday, September 11th during lunches to take Graduation Product orders.
    • Garner Magnet High School will host its back-to-school Open House event on Thursday, September 12th from 6:30 to 8:00 PM.  This is an open forum event where students and parents can move freely about the building to meet with teachers.
    • Attentions students interested in participating in Powder Puff this fall:  Powder Puff sign ups will be on Friday, September 13th, in Room 4118 at 7:00 AM.

    Summer Memo 2019:  Good evening Garner Nation; this is principal Carter Hillman with a summer memo as we are moving closer to the opening of the 2019-20 school year:

    •  First day for students is next Monday, August 26th.  We are excited for the start of the 2019-2020 school year.
    • Junior and Seniors:  This is a reminder that there is no off-campus lunches during the first few days of school in order to make certain all processes and staff are secured.
    • Students and Parents:  This is a reminder that all schedule change requests are to be completed online.  The link is on the GMHS website.
    • Any student who was not able to pick up their parking pass today will need to see Mr. Pruette on the first day of school during your lunch period.  He will have a table set up in the main lobby.
    • Parents:  If you are planning to drop off and pick up your student during the first week of school, please keep in mind that the opening of school is the heaviest traffic time of the school year.  The carpool entrance is at the back of the school near the corner of Coldwater and Spring Drive.  The front entrance is for staff and visitor parking only.  Drop off is in the front of the school only.  Please use the right lane for dropping off students in the morning.  We will use both lanes in the afternoon.
    • All students are required to have their student IDs visible at all times, starting day one.  For returned GMHS students who have lost their ID, a replacement ID is $5.00.  For new students coming to GMHS, the initial cost of an ID is $10.00. 
    • Attention parents of students who ride a school bus:  You must register your child to ride the bus each year.  Please visit the Wake County website, under Transportation you will find the “rider application” that needs to be completed for your student to ride the school bus.  This needs to be completed today.
    • Students interested in signing up for the PSAT on Wednesday, October 16th, should visit the GMHS webpage, under News and Announcements, to sign up.  The cost is $17.00.

    Summer Memo 2019:  Good evening Garner Nation; this is principal Carter Hillman with a summer memo as we are moving closer to the opening of the 2019-20 school year:

    • For those students interested in participating in a fall sport, the opening day for these seasons is this Thursday, August 1st.  Students are required to have completed all WCPSS and GMHS paperwork AND have an up-to-date sport's physical.
    • Freshmen students and parents:  Thursday, August 8th, from 1:00 to 3:00 PM is the Freshmen Open House in the auditorium.  Freshmen will be receiving their schedules on this day and touring the school building. Parents are welcome to participate in the information sessions.
    • Student parking information is now on the GMHS webpage.  Please continue to check for updates as to when passes are to be distributed.  Lunch pass information will be posted soon.
    • Attention parents of students who ride a school bus:  You must register your child to ride the bus each year.  Please visit the Wake County website, under Transportation you will locate the “rider application” that needs to be completed for your student to ride the school bus.  This needs to be completed no later than Friday, August 16th to ensure your student has a seat on a school bus for the first day of school.
    • Reminder that student schedules will not be finalized until Monday, August 19th.

    Graduation Memo 6-06-19:  Good evening Garner Nation; this is Principal Carter Hillman with a special memo concerning the upcoming Graduation Ceremony:

    • Monday, June 10th is the Garner Magnet High School graduation.  The ceremony begins at 8:00 PM at the Raleigh Convention Center.  Seniors need to arrive by 7:00 PM to prepare for the ceremony.  A reminder that the cost of the parking deck is $7.00.
    • The Garner Magnet High School graduation ceremony, scheduled start at 8:00 PM on Monday, June 10th, will be streamed live via the WCPSS webpage.  The link will be posted on the WCPSS website. Click on the name of the school under the Upcoming Events section. Click on the view live stream link. GMHS will also put a link to this event on the GMHS webpage. The links will be added as the graduation date get closer. Garner Magnet High School graduation is officially set for 8:00 PM on Monday, June 10th.  We hope that this streaming affords the opportunity for all Garner Nation to be a part of the 2019 graduation ceremony.

    Tuesday Memo 5-28-2019 – Good evening Garner Nation; this is Principal Carter Hillman with a Tuesday Memo:

    •  Attention IB Seniors and Parents:  The IB DP Cording Ceremony will take place tonight, Tuesday, May 28th, starting at 6:00 PM in the auditorium.
    • Attention Parents and Students, the Spring Final Exam schedule is posted on the school website.  Exams begin tomorrrow Wednesday, May 29th and conclude on Thursday, June 6th.  For EOC testing on June 4th through June 6th, students can request an Early Release from school, once testing has been completed for the day.  These are the only days GMHS will allow for Early Release.  Students can pick up these forms, that required a parent signature, in the main office.  They need to be returned no later than tomorrow, Wednesday, May 29th, by 2:00 PM.
    • Students and Parents:  During the first four days of testing we want to let you know the locations that will be available during the 55-minute lunch period (from 10:25 to 11:20 AM).  The cafeteria is available for student lunches.   The gym is available, but no food is allowed.  The library is open for quiet study, no food is allowed.  The Central common areas, near the administrative offices, are available for quiet study for students who brought a lunch from home.  Finally, off-campus lunch passes are valid for the full 55-minute lunch period.  A reminder for those leaving campus, you must return on time from lunch or you will be completing exams during the make-up times on June 7th through June 11th.
    • Attention Seniors: The Senior Picnic is scheduled for this Thursday, May 30th, from 2:30 to 5:00 PM at Trojan Stadium. 
    • Seniors and senior parents, please mark your calendar to two important graduation dates.     • The GMHS Choral Banquet is set to take place tonight, Monday, May 20th at First Baptist Church, starting at 6:00 PM.
    • The GMHS Public Safety Academy Awards Night is also scheduled tonight, Monday, May 20th, starting at 6:00 PM in the auditorium.
    • The GMHS Dance Awards will take place tomorrow, Tuesday, May 21st, starting at 7:00 PM in the auditorium.
    • Attention all GMHS Student Athletes:  Sports physicals for GMHS student athletes will be offered this Wednesday, May 22nd starting at 6:00 PM at Raleigh Orthopedic, the Garner office, 1325 Timber Drive East.  The cost is $20 cash or make check payable to the Garner Trojan Club.  You will need a reservation form and a completed Wake County Participation Form for the physical.  Forms are on both the WCPSS and GMHS websites, or you can pick up from Mr. Guerrero in Room 1513A.
    • Parents and Students are invited to attend an informational session on the ACT and SAT exams at the Southeast Regional library in Garner this Wednesday, May 22nd, starting at 6:30 PM.

    • Attention Parents and Students, the Spring Final Exam schedule is posted on the school website.  Exams begin on Wednesday, May 29th and conclude on Thursday, June 6th.  For EOC testing on June 4th through June 6th, students can request an Early Release from school, once testing has been completed for the day.  These are the only days GMHS will allow for Early Release.  Students can pick up these forms, that required a parent signature, in the main office.  They need to be returned no later than 2:00 PM on Wednesday, May 29th.
