Degrees and Certifications:
I am a Literacy Coach and Intervention Teacher/Facilitator at YMES. This is my third year here and my 25th year in education. Prior to coming to YMES I worked as a Curriculum Specialist for Johnston County Public Schools and a Regional Literacy Coach for the Department of Public Instruction. I also spent many years as a Special Education Teacher.
I am fascinated by the science of reading. Scientists have learned so much about the basic mechanisms that support skilled reading, how skilled reading is acquired, and the main causes of reading impairments. I am eager to support teachers in using this scientific evidence so that all of our students can grow in literacy and reach their full potential. Reading opens up a world of opportunities!
I am originally from New York State. I have traveled extensively in North America, South America, and Europe. I hope to eventually visit the other continents!
I have a wonderful, supportive husband that works for the NC General Assembly, two incredible children (my son is an engineering student at NC State and my daughter is pursuing a doctorate in bioengineering at the University of Washington), a sweet, loving mixed-breed dog, and an inquisitive kitty.
In my free time I like to participate in fitness classes, read, garden, watch Netflix, and spend time with my amazing family and friends. I also LOVE to eat chocolate truffles!
