Community Service Guidelines for the 2021-2022 School Year

  • Community Service Hours Requirement

Due to the continuing impacts of Covid 19 on our community, the 25 hour service requirement for the 2021-2022 school year will be optional for all students. Although completing hours will not be required for any students, students will be permitted to submit hours for credit with the Broughton High School Community Service Program.

    • These changes are in additon to the removal of the 25 hour service requirement during the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 school years.
    • Students will not be required to complete or make up these past hours at any time.
    • Students are able to earn a silver graduation cord according to the hours breakdown below.
    • Students are able to earn recognition as a top 20 senior in the service program.
    • Seniors graduating in 2022 will not be required to have any credited service hours to be eligible for graduation.
    • The deadline for underclassmen service hours will be Friday, May 6, 2022 at 3:00pm. The deadline for seniors to submit hours is Friday, April 1, 2022 at 3:00pm.

Additional Guidelines for the Submission of Hours

Community service hours should be entered into the new community service program, x2Vol. Students will log in using their student email address. For more information about how to log in and enter hours, please consult the x2Vol Student Guide.

Service hours must have been performed for a NON-PROFIT, 501c3 organization. Non-profit agencies include organizations such as the SPCA, Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity, any public school, church activities, public libraries and many more. When in doubt about whether an agency is a non-profit, please ask someone at the agency.

Verification Process – When entering hours in X2Vol, Broughton students will be required to submit one of the following items for verification: 1. A verification letter from the agency that verifies the student’s name, the dates, and the number of hours served. The letter must be on agency letterhead. Students will be able to upload a picture or digital file of the written verification. 2. An email address for non-profit agency contact. The email address must contain the name of the agency to be accepted. Service submitted with a personal email address will be denied. Submissions in X2Vol that do not meet these requirements will be returned to the student for correction before hours can be credited. Students will receive a message when hours are accepted, denied, or returned to them for correction.

Students may submit hours from the previous school year. We will make every effort to verify all hours submitted. However, due to the extended program pause, it may not be possible for all submissions from prior years to be verified.

Service hours for BHS donations (canned food, BHS pantry, coat drive, etc.) will be available to students for a MAXIMUM of 5 hours per year (1 hour for every $5 spent) with a submitted receipt.

The maximum number of hours per day/per event will not exceed 10 hours. Travel time is not included in volunteer hours.

Students may not earn service hours for class sponsored activities such as Prom, Float Building, or Queen of Hearts.

Silver Honor Cord for Graduation Students who perform at least 25 additional hours of community service over their requirement for their years at Broughton may earn a silver cord to wear at graduation. The silver cord designates the recipient as a Community Service Honors Graduate.

Student Privileges such as receiving off-campus lunch passes and parking passes, student government participation, Honor Society participation, Service Club participation and participation on the Homecoming and Queen of Hearts Courts are contingent upon successful completion of hours for each year.

The deadline for underclassmen service hours will be Friday, May 6th at 3:00pm. The deadline for seniors to submit hours is Friday, April 1st at 3:00pm.

Parent approval for volunteering is only required when students are doing service off-campus.

Please noteGroup Forms for community service will no longer be available. If a BHS staff member has students volunteer in a group, each student should submit the hours in X2Vol and include the teacher’s email address for verification of the hours.
