Degrees and Certifications:

Mrs. Johnson

My name is Meg Johnson and I teach English as a Second Language (ESL) at Yates Mill Elementary School.  I attended UNC Chapel Hill on a NC Teaching Fellows scholarship, and graduated in 2003 with a B.A. degree in Elementary Education with a concentration in ESL education.  I earned my National Board of Professional Teaching Standards certification in 2009. I have taught 2nd grade, 4th grade, and am excited to be teaching ESL here at YMES again this year…my 20th year of teaching!

I live in Cary with my husband (also a WCPSS teacher) and our 8-year-old daughter.  Our furry family member is a retired racing greyhound. My other passions besides teaching are visual arts, sewing, crafts, singing, running, ice skating, camping, and spending time with my family and friends.

As an ESL educator, I engage multilingual students in learning activities to build speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills.  I work collaboratively with YMES teachers to help every child grow throughout the year in their language learning.  It is my belief that each and every student must feel safe, valued, and represented in our school in order for learning to occur.

I am currently learning a second language myself, as I am studying and practicing Spanish.  Puedo hablar y entender el Español bastante bien. ¡Ser bilingüe es un superpoder!

Please contact me with any questions.  I am here to support our YMES students and their families!
