The Design Principles are designed to help transform classrooms to become student-centered, personalized learning environments that align with the knowledge, skills and abilities required for success in jobs and higher education.
“Innovation is step one to improving school performance,” said Tony Habit, NC New Schools President. “Sustaining that change over time through continuous learning and improvement is how schools can achieve excellence. Others can learn from the disciplined approach to improvement exemplified by these schools.”
The recognized schools were selected based on demonstrated use of a variety of innovations outlined in the NC New Schools/Breakthrough Learning design principles to foster student centered learning, including a culture of collaboration, and a personalized approach to support college and career readiness. Qualitative measures related to student growth and performance on the ACT and other measures were also taken into account as an indication that innovation is leading to strong student outcomes in each school.
