Mr. Grant and Ms. SykesAll about Mr. Grant
I am honored to be serving in my fourth year as the principal of Washington GT Magnet Elementary School where I taught and both of my sons attended. I have been an educator for 28 years and my goal is to engage and challenge every child in a thriving learning community. I believe a strong, healthy school is one where a passionate and skilled staff works in collaboration with actively involved parents and our broader community to prepare our students to be well-rounded leaders in the 21st century. I am proud to be part of such an amazing and diverse community of learners.
I have a B.A in political science with a minor in economics from Tulane University in New Orleans, LA. After briefly interning on Capitol Hill, I taught elementary school in an inner city Catholic school in Washington, DC. I earned a master's degree in elementary education at Syracuse University. In the early 1990's I moved to Raleigh where I taught at Durant Road Year Round Elementary School for 5 years and Washington GT Magnet Elementary for 10 years. During that time I was a mentor teacher and became a National Board Certified teacher. After 19 years in the classroom, I earned a master's degree in administration from NC State through the Wake County Leadership Cohort. I served as the assistant principal at Briarcliff Elementary in Cary for three years and in 2010 was the named the Assistant Principal of the Year for Wake County. Prior to serving as Washington's principal, I was the principal of Lacy Elementary school for 3 years.
My wife, Emily, is the youth programs coordinator at the NC Museum of History. We have two sons. Ben attends UNC Wilmington and Wyatt attends UNC Chapel Hill. My sons and I enjoy playing basketball and eating ice cream. Our family loves traveling, laughing, and trying new foods. I look forward to getting to know you and your family.
Mr. Grant, PrincipalAll about Ms. Sykes
When I was a student at Shaw University, I walked to Washington GT Magnet Elementary to get experience working with students while I was learning about all the components that shape great teachers. Little did I know that my educational career would bring me back here as an Assistant Principal! After graduating from Shaw, I taught grades K-3 at Bugg Elementary over a span of eight years. During this time I led professional development, coordinated an after-school enrichment program, achieved National Board Certification, and was selected Teacher of the Year by my colleagues. During this time, I realized how much I enjoyed working with students AND teachers. Several mentors supported me as I decided to enter into administration. I earned a Masters in School Administration at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill through the NC Principals Fellows Program. I completed my administrative internship at Fuquay-Varina Elementary School. This is my fourth year as assistant principal and I have loved getting to know students, staff and parents. I am currently pursuing my doctoral degree at High Point University.I love spending time with my family and friends, and I enjoy photography, traveling, reading, and learning new technology. I am excited and looking forward to a successful year of working hard, growing, learning, exceeding high expectations, and having fun with the students, staff, and families of Washington GT Magnet Elementary.Ms. Sykes, Assistant Principal
