Good evening, Trojans. This is principal Matthew Price with your weekly announcements.

I’d like to proudly announce that we just learned Garner has been named a Magnet School of Excellence. This is a tremendous honor, and I’d like to personally thank each of you, your students, and most of all our faculty and staff for all of the hard work required to attain this distinction. This is the first time in the history of Garner High School that we have reached this designation. It’s a great time to be a Trojan!

Next week we celebrate our School Counselors. Please take a moment to send a quick note to those hard-working counselors. They do amazing work, and will be recognized on Thursday at the State Board of Education meeting for receiving the state-wide Diamond Award for excellence in school counseling.

Please save the date for next Tuesday’s Curriculum Showcase from 5:30-7:00. This is a chance for us to show off all of the programs and courses that we have to offer before your child registers for classes for next year.

Attention Sophomore Parents and Students- This Thursday after school in Room 4101, Mrs. Bennett will host a Personal Project Tutoring/Work Session to help you work on your Personal Project. Please plan to attend if you have questions, need to work on your report, or if you need to work on your visual aid for the Product Showcase, which is next Wednesday, February 7th and Thursday, February 8th.

Our Student Government is hosting their annual Volleybros fundraiser next week. Please see the GMHS website or social media platforms for more information.

Spring sports tryouts begin on February 14th. Now is a good time to make sure that physical paperwork is up to date and in order, as well as the other materials required for participation in athletics. You can see the GMHS website for details on requirements to participate and play.

This feels like the time of year that we have to remind everyone to tighten up on policies and procedures within the school. That said, I’ll ask that everyone refresh themselves with expectations regarding morning carpool procedures. Carpool drivers should enter either through the main entrance off of Spring Drive (at the spirit rock), or should use the express lane entrance off of Spring Drive behind the softball field. Students must only be dropped off at the designated locations on each of these, and drivers must remain in the carpool lanes throughout. We are seeing increases in U-turns, students dropped off randomly in the line, or drivers pulling into lots where this isn’t allowed. Please follow these procedures as each of those violations is dangerous for our students and will result in disciplinary action for students not abiding by our carpool rules.

Our Black Student Union will be hosting our BSU Showcase in the Auditorium on February 15th. See the school website or social media platforms for specifics. We look forward to celebrating Black HIstory Month in February with this event, as well as other events planned and carried out by our BSU.

These are all of the announcements that I have for today. I hope everyone has gotten off to a great start to the new semester. GO TROJANS!
