3. National School Counseling Week 2025 (#NSCW25) is Feb. 3-7, 2025, to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems. The theme is "School Counseling: Helping Students Thrive." National School Counseling Week, presented by ASCA, highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have on helping students achieve school success and plan for a career. National School Counseling Week is always celebrated the first full week of February. Join us by participating in a spirit week.
At LRMS, we express our gratitude for Mrs. McCallister (6th grade), Dr. Thomas (7th grade) and Dr. Leonce (8th grade)!
Here's a flyer with ways you can show your appreciation each day next week.
4. February is Black History Month. At LRMS, we will honor the accomplishments of Black Americans in history by highlighting famous individuals on the Morning News. Here's some background that WCPSS provided our leaders:
Since 1976, the nation's bicentennial. President Gerald R. Ford urged Americans to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” That year, fifty years after the first celebration, the association held the first African American History Month. By this time, the entire nation had come to recognize the importance of Black history in the drama of the American story. Since then each American president has issued African American History Month proclamations.
In North Carolina, Governor Roy Cooper issued a proclamation for Black History Month as an opportunity to honor and celebrate African Americans who have helped and continue to shape and strengthen North Carolina while also changing the course of American history. During this month, we honor their work and sacrifice as we strive for our more perfect union.
5. Hopefully you saw the District's message on Supporting Families Amid Recent Federal Immigration Orders. Here is the landing page from WCPSS. If you have questions, please feel free to use the online form or reach out to us in the main office as well. The opening statement from WCPSS sums up my feelings:
Our primary focus remains on the well-being, safety, and education of every student we serve, regardless of their background. We recognize that recent orders may cause uncertainty for some members of our community. We want to reaffirm our commitment to fostering a safe and welcoming environment where all children can learn and thrive.
