    Good Afternoon East Millbrook!

We hope that this message finds you all doing well and staying as dry as possible on this rainy Sunday morning.

We appreciate everything that each of you do for our school community each day. We know how hard each of you work to ensure that your child has a positive school experience and we can see the commitment that each of you show to your child’s success now and in the future.

Please remind your child that personal electronic devices should be locked away in their locker each day. As school becomes more engaging with students focused on solving critical thinking problems, collaborating with peers, and creatively communicating their thinking, learning products, and content mastery there is no time for distraction.

Carpool families – for safety purposes please ensure that your child remains in the car until the bell rings at 7:00 AM each day. There are no adults on duty before 7:00 AM.

Families with students who walk to school each day – please have your child(ren) plan to leave home at a time when they will arrive to campus at 7:05 AM and not much sooner. Again, there are no adults on duty or supervising them if they arrive on campus prior to 7:00 AM.

This Wednesday our Girls Soccer Team and Girls Volleyball team will compete at West Millbrook.

Thursday is the BATTLE OF THE BROOKS football game. Our football team will compete against West Millbrook at Millbrook High School. Game time is 6:30 PM.

Coach Baker is selling a boxed meal, tickets, and a ride to the game to the first 60 students this week. We are looking forward to seeing so many East Millbrook students and families at the game. Go Cougars!

The WCPSS Magnet Fair will take place at Panther Creek High School this Saturday from 9:00 AM until 12:00 PM. Families who are interested in learning more about High School options are invited to attend this event.

School Pictures will be taken on Monday, October 28th. Strawbridge Studios will be on campus taking pictures and information was sent home this week. If you have any questions, please speak with Ms. Bailey at the front desk.

We look forward to seeing you all soon!

    Yours,

    Aaron Marcin, Principal

Happy Sunday East Millbrook Middle School/Academy Families!

Please remember that tomorrow – September 30th is a teacher workday. Students will not report to school tomorrow.

We have truly enjoyed getting to know your child during these first few weeks of school as we have been teaching routines, procedures, expectations, etc. We have also had amazing experiences with children as we have worked to build positive authentic relationships.

In addition to front-loading our school year with this work, we missed two days of learning and teaching due to unpredictable Hurricane weather. As a result, we will be sending interim reports home on Friday, October 4th so that we are best able to communicate to you the progress that your child is making.

October 8th is also our district voting date. We encourage all our community members to exercise their right to vote. For those of you who may not have time to do both, we are providing the information for early voting, or absentee voting in case you need it.

Look for more information to come home and be posted on our website about this exciting event.

Cell Phones – We continue to enforce the same Cell Phone Policy at East Millbrook that has been in place for the past few years.

Cell phones are not to be seen by a staff member or in the “on position” as soon as students enter campus. If students do bring these items to school, they should be turned off and locked securely in their locker until the end of the instructional day. Confiscated items will be taken to the office and held for a parent/guardian to pick up. The main office is open from 7:00 AM-3:30 PM during every school day.

Lockers – Students at EM3 have been issued locks to securely store their belongings in their lockers each school day. Please help your child to memorize their locker combinations so that they can quickly get into their lockers when needed to avoid tardies. With these locks on lockers, we highly encourage students to keep cell phones in their lockers during the school day.

Athletic Events – Please check the EM3 Master Calendar to see when athletic events are taking place so that your child and family can support our athletes throughout the school year. We hosted our first home Volleyball match last week and were excited to have such a large home crowd cheering on the Lady Cougars to their WIN!

Positivity Project - This week, during Positivity Project time, teachers and students will discuss the character strength of teamwork. Teamwork is the ability and willingness to place overall group success as a higher priority than individual achievement. Citizenship is a willingness to work towards the common good as opposed to one’s own self-interest. Those who demonstrate strengths in teamwork and citizenship often work to help all group members find success. These individuals are willing to commit time and resources in order to further group goals and help toward the greater good.

This strength is associated with naturally positive feelings that accompany being a member of a family, team, school, political party, ethnic group, or country. However, those positive feelings can come with bad behavior towards the “out-group” in the form of blind obedience, disparaging words, or prejudice. This is important to guard against by leveraging a person’s other positive character strengths.

We look forward to seeing everyone soon. Please let us know if you need anything!

    Good Afternoon East Millbrook Families!

We had an amazing first week of school last week and we are looking forward to the next four days ahead. We appreciate all of the support that our families provided students and staff throughout the first week and we could not have had the week of success if it were not for all of you.

Student agenda's will be coming home this week. The agenda's are provided to all students free of charge and are a great way for families to check in on the work being done in class, assignments that may need to be completed after school, and are a great way to lead discussions with your children in the afternoons/evenings.

Remember that school staff are prepared to receive and monitor students at 7:00 AM each day. No one is available to monitor students prior to 7:00 AM  each day. If you are one of the first cars in the carpool line, please wait until the bell rings and our carpoool staff begin unloading cars.

Families who do participate in carpool - please make sure that students are getting into and out of your cars in front of our main office building. It is for safety reasons that we ask that students not move toward cars in other areas of our campus.

Students in grades 6-8 will be participating in our district's i-Ready assessment program in the next eight days. If you have any questions about the i-Ready assessments that are conducted in reading/math, please contact your child's math or ELA teacher for more information. School staff will use the data received to support specific instructional interventions aligned with your child's specific learning needs.

Thank you to all our student athletes who turned in their physicals and completed the online forms necessary to participate in try-outs. Our coaches have been impressed by all the talent that has come out so far this year.

It's time to clean up the campus!  We hope you can join us on Saturday, September 14 from 9:00-11:00am.   Here is the sign-up if you can help!

Please consider joining the PTSA!  The contributions of our families and community members are important to continue to grow our school and to provide the best experiences and education for your students. Membership forms can be located in the front office or you can join with our online link.

Have you purchased your Spirit Wear yet?  We will sell at school events or you can order online here.

    Happy Sunday East Millbrook Families!

Believe it or not we are about to begin the final two school days of the 2018-2019 school year. We are excited to celebrate the growth and success that our students have made this year and sad to see the year come to a close.

The past six weeks at East Millbrook Magnet Middle have been some of the most amazing and inspiring of my career. I have been honored to get to know this spectacular school community and to begin the process of building meaningful and lasting relationships with as many people as possible in this amount of time.

My time has been spent asking questions, observing, and participating in the learning experiences that we provide students on a daily basis here at the Academy. I have been so impressed by the level of commitment and engagement that students and staff put forth throughout the campus.

We have worked to get information from as many stakeholders as possible so that we can continue working over the summer to develop a shared vision that will move us forward into next year. We would like to thank each student, parent, and family who has taken the time to share information and take time out of their busy schedules to support us in creating the best future possible for everyone at East Millbrook.

Report Cards will be mailed out this week and should arrive to your homes by the end of this week or early next week. Included in the report card will be promotion information, EOG scores, and any other progress report that may apply to your Academy student.

The North Carolina Math EOG's are being re-normed this year. As a result, the state will be mailing home Math EOG scores later this fall (August 2019). A detailed letter will be placed in your child's report card envelope with more information.

We had a great time last Friday celebrating our 6th and 7th grade students who earned achievements in academics, arts, and character throughout the school year. Congratulations to everyone who was recognized during the ceremonies!

Our 8th grade students will participate in an Assembly this Tuesday where we will celebrate their gifts, talents, accomplishments, and success in completing their Middle School careers. We are excited to see each of you off to high school this fall!

Our staff would like to thank each member of our community who has supported our school community in any way this school year. We could not continue to grow and achieve if it were not for the support of our entire Academy village. Thank you to our PTSA who will be recognizing our amazing staff by providing a catered lunch on Wednesday afternoon.

We will working throughout the Academy this summer. If anyone has any questions or would like to meet and discuss ways that we can enrich the opportunities that we provide each learner, please reach out and schedule a time. You can reach us by calling the front office 919-850-8755 or you can email me at tmarcin@wcpss.net.

In closing, we appreciate the privilege to serve your families throughout the year at East Millbrook Magnet Middle School. We look forward to seeing our returning Cougars this fall and wish our 8th graders all the best as they move on to High School. Although you are leaving our campus as full-time scholars, we invite you back to visit us when you have an opportunity in the future.

    Yours,

    Aaron Marcin, Principal
