Creativity, Activity and Service
-
What is Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS)?
CAS is one of the three core components of the IB Diploma Programme. The three strands of CAS, which are often interwoven with particular activities, are characterized as follows.
Creativity: arts, and other experiences that involve creative thinking.
Action: physical exertion contributing to a healthy lifestyle, complementing academic work elsewhere in the Diploma Programme.
Service: an unpaid and voluntary exchange that has a learning benefit for the student. The rights, dignity and autonomy of all those involved are respected.
Students are involved in a wide range of activities alongside their academic studies and are required to complete at least one project. These should involve:
- real, purposeful activities, with significant outcomes
- personal challenge
- thoughtful consideration, such as planning, reviewing progress, reporting reflection on outcomes and personal learning
Example of creativity project
Fashion design - Design and create different articles of clothing exploring fashion styles, then host a fashion show.
Example of activity project
Go camping - Organize a trip that includes activities like rock climbing and hiking. Learn how to build a campfire and pitch a tent.
Example of a service project
Food assistance - Volunteer at a local food bank and help organize, sort and distribute food to those dealing with homelessness and poverty.
