The IB Mission Statement
“The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organization works… to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.”
International Baccalaureate at Millbrook High School
Millbrook has two unique IB programmes, the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the Diploma Programme (DP). These programs complement one another to give students a unique educational environment that will allow them to develop academically, socially, and emotionally. With an emphasis on certain core principals, the IB programmes at Millbrook help students see their education in the context of how they live their lives and how they interact with the world around them. Adherence to these core principals of rigor in the classroom, collaborative and cross-cultural curriculum, and an internationally-minded approach to understanding course content have made the International Baccalaureate Organization become a global leader in education.
- Rigor is a product of a demanding curriculum and consistently high expectations. The Middle Years Programme (MYP) uses criteria-referenced assessment to instruct and evaluate student learning. The Diploma Programme (DP) offers the most widely acclaimed college-prep programme that will prepare students for the demands of university and beyond.
- Collaborative and Cross-Curricular education mean that students and teachers are making connections to materials in areas of study across the curriculum. It is an understanding that no single subject matter can exist in isolation from other knowledge and that to study material in connection with other subject areas is to provide the context for how that content impacts us and why it matters.
- International Mindedness is the recognition that people from different cultural backgrounds share basic human sensibilities and motivations while nurturing differences in cultures and viewpoints that make us unique. It is an understanding that our local and global communities are made up of people with different personal and cultural perspectives that guide the decisions they make that impact the world in which we live. To understand those perspectives is to better understand our own world.
Middle Years Programme
The Middle Years Programme at Millbrook is a whole-school programme for all 9th and 10th graders that provides academic challenge and the building of academic skills. The programme is designed to help students see the connections between the courses they study and their own world. The MYP promotes cross-curricular study, inquiry, and critical and reflective thinking, as keys to 21st century success.
Diploma Programme
The IB Diploma Programme is designed as an academically challenging and balanced programme of education with final examinations that prepares students for success at university and life beyond. The programme also requires students to engage in community activity and research as an extension of their classroom experience. The programme is taught during the junior and senior years and has gained recognition and respect from the world's leading universities.
