The Academy for Construction and Design Careers (ACDC) offers students career pathways in construction or architecture. Within the ACDC, students receive required academy pathway courses integrated into their core curriculum. Students are grouped in two cohorts--CTE ACDC Construction (Construction Core and Carpentry course series) or Architecture (Drafting I and Drafting Architecture course series) and the Social Studies classes. ACDC students that enroll in an AP Social Studies class is a separate cohort. Another major academy component and benefit is that ACDC students receive hands-on experiences from on-site and off-site work-based learning (WBL) events. Some WBL events include industry tours, college visits, job shadowing, and internship. Other academy benefits are displayed at the end of this page.
Within the academy, students can gain Work-based Learning (WBL) skills via onsite and offsite / industry tour events. Another academy benefit is that members get hands-on experiences during their required academy internship (135 hours | paid or unpaid) in their academy-related pathway. Typically, this internship is done in the summer of the junior year or in their senior year. Prior to the internship start, ACDC students must make an appointment with the ACDC Director, along with completing pre-internship forms.
According to the North Carolina Career Clusters Guide (refer to pages 23 - 28), "the state's construction industry is expected to grow and show increases in" Architecture and Construction careers. You can prepare for this growth, by joining the WFHS Academy for Construction and Design Careers (ACDC).
