Dear Green Families,
By now you have heard that the Governor has closed NC public schools for the remainder of the school year. While this announcement was not unexpected, the immediacy of it left many of us quiet and sad. We believe that it is the right decision to make in order to keep students, staff, and families safe, but the sting of not being able to say goodbye at the end of a school year was felt deeply by staff.
For our Fifth Graders, this was a big year. Their final year in elementary school before moving on to incredibly exciting possibilities in middle school. We look forward to this celebration every year. The realization that we will not have our traditional rituals is disappointing to us all.
For our Kindergarten learners, completing that first year of school is a big deal! They too will have an interesting story to tell as they get older about their first year in school. I know that our teachers miss their students so much.
So where do we go from here? Time moves on and so will we. Our Fifth Graders will move on to middle schools around the county. Our first-year teachers will put this year behind them, new learning being solidified in their minds in exceedingly strange conditions for the start of a career.
The school building is closed, but learning continues. I want to commend students and parents for the incredible work and commitment to learning that you’ve shown so far in remote learning. We know that parents are our students’ first teachers, and you have really come through for in this situation! We want to remind you the “best you can do is all that you should do”. We do not expect you to be able to replicate the work that teachers do in the classroom. That’s the work we’re trained to do. We ask only that you love your kids, keep them safe, and log in as often as you can for learning.
My last message to you provided links to a multitude of resources. The following link will take you to our webpage where you will find some helpful videos that will explain how to log into and use Google Classroom, Dreambox, and ClassKik among others:
If you received a Chromebook or hotspot from school, please use the instruction sheets provided and use the technology helpline phone number on the forms.
We expect some additional updates from the district as a result of school closures for the remainder of the year. When we receive final clarification around grading, school closure processes, and other topics we will get that info to you as soon as we can.
Thank you again for your commitment to Green Elementary School and to our students. You have done an amazing job. Give yourselves kudos and grace. Stay committed. If you need something, reach out. You’ve got this, and we’ve got you.
With Love and Respect,
The PTA would like your help in showing our Green ES Teachers some love during Teacher Appreciation Week, May 4-8th. Please FOLLOW the Green PTA Facebook page for more information on how you can show our teachers that you appreciate them:
