Principal Message October 2019
Thank you, Green Families!
We're off to a great start for the 2019-2020 school year. Thank you so much to those who have attended our Open House, Internet Safety, and Readers are Leaders events. We appreciate you!
Welcome Ms Davenport
Since our last letter, Ebony Davenport has joined our front office staff. We are thrilled to have her sunny smile at the front desk each day. Please say hello and introduce yourself to her when you visit. Welcome Ebony!
Welcome to our latest hire Laura Morales! She joins our World Language team as a Spanish Teacher. Say hello to her when you visit!
October is Bully Prevention Month
Please join us in bringing awareness of bully prevention strategies during the month of October. Below is a schedule of events you can support to bring awareness:
· October 7 Wear Blue Day
· October 21 Wear Sweats Day
· October 22 WackyTacky Day
· October 23 Wear Orange Day
· October 24 Team Day (wear your favorited team spiritwear)
· October 25 Green Spirit Wear Day
Join Green Elementary at the McDonald’s on Six Forks Rd (corner of Six Forks and Sawmill Rd) for McTeacher Night on Thursday, Oct 10 between 5:30-8:00pm! Enjoy dinner with the family as your teachers serve up those Big Macs, fries and sundaes. A portion of all proceeds that night will go to the Green Elementary PTA. See you there!
Covey for Parents
Join us on Tuesday, October 15 for an overview of our Leadership Magnet Theme and the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families. We’ll begin at 6:00pm in our Media Center. Dr. Brown will introduce the habits, explain our program, and give you tips for how to apply the 7 habits at home! We hope you will join us for this important learning time!
Check In/ Check Out
Please remember that you must have your Identification (passport, driver’s license) when you check in and check out students. This allows us to know who is checking students in and out each day - safety first! Please also be patient and courteous if someone asks you for identification - as stated earlier, new folks are at the front desk who may or may not recognize you. Thank you for being kind.
Transportation Changes/Early Pick Up
Transportation changes for students must be made in writing to the teacher or called to the office no later than 3:30pm. Early check outs must take place by 3:30pm. After the dismissal period begins, students are moving in many areas of the building and it is extremely difficult for us to pass along messages at that point. Thank you for your cooperation.
Carpool Pick up
Please remember that carpool/walker students must be picked up by 4:20 each day. Late pick up is 4:30pm. The front office closes at 4:30pm each day. Repeated instances of picking up students past 4:30pm (or returned on the school bus) will result in referral to the school social worker and, in repeated instances, revocation of transfer or magnet status. All transfers etc. are contingent on good standing as it relates to compliance with policies, attendance, and behavior expectations. Thank you in advance for your cooperation!
Please be reminded that students must go home in the event of temperature, vomiting, or diarrhea. Students must be free of these symptoms for a full 24 hours before returning to school. Thank you in advance for helping us keep school healthy!
We continue to enjoy our work with the Positivity Project. Check out the PTA Board’s display of their top character strengths in the main lobby. So far, we’ve engaged in classroom discussions about:
· Other People Matter mindset
Next week we’ll engage in classroom discussion about being present and giving others my attention. Let your children teach you about these character strengths and find ways to practice them with children at home. If you want tips – see the announcement above about our Covey Parent opportunity. We’ll tie it all together for you!
Dropping off student to school from Snelling Road is prohibited. The school accepts no responsibility for student safety until they are on our campus. Stopping in the middle of traffic on Snelling Road to let children out of the building is not only a traffic violation, it is seriously unsafe for children. Please do not do it. If we see it, we must report it. Thank you for helping us keep our kids safe.
Also, remember that parking in traffic lanes is not permitted. Take note of the No Parking sign on Snelling just before the right-hand turn lane. Thank you for not parking in that lane.
Join the PTA!
At Green Elementary we have a fantastic PTA that is very supportive of our school. Please join them in their work to support learning for children and to advocate for policies that support all children and schools. So far this year the PTA has hosted Meet the Teacher, scheduled Popsicles in the Park, and will be available to parents at Open House for memberships, Spirit Wear, and so much more. Please consider joining them in support of our children!
