Principal Message September 2019

    Welcome Back to Green Everyone!

We're off to a great start for the 2019-2020 school year.  Thank you so much to our PTA and to our parents for yours support as we begin the new year.  There have been lots of changes during the summer, so we have much to tell you below. Please be sure to read this entire message for important information - it's long but important.

    Welcome New Assistant Principals

Please welcome to our school Mr. Jonathan Woody and Ms. Laura Winter. Mr. Woody has joined us from Carrboro Elementary where he was an Assistant Principal.  Ms. Winter joins us from central services in her role as a School MTSS Coach. We are thrilled to have them with us and they are making some great, positive changes here at Green. If you have questions/concerns about buses, please contact Mr. Woody (jwoody@wcpss.net). If you have questions about carpool, please contact Ms. Winter (lwinter@wcpss.net).

As a reminder, our school Secretary is Chermaine Arthur and our Data Manager (enrollment) is Maggy Krahe. We are currently interviewing for a new Clerical Assistant to work at our front desk. In the meanwhile, other staff will continue to fill in. Please give grace and be patient as we strive to provide you with support.  Please say hello as you see these new folks around campus.

    Spanish Teacher

We are in the process of hiring a new Spanish teacher.  She will begin on September 16. At that time, we will rearrange our class rosters for Spanish. Thank you for your patience and support as we adjust class sizes to smaller numbers and bring on board a new teacher.

    Check In/ Check Out

Please remember that you must have your Identification (passport, driver’s license) when you check in and check out students.  This allows us to know who is checking students in and out each day - safety first!  Please also be patient and courteous if someone asks you for identification - as stated earlier, new folks are at the front desk who may or may not recognize you.  Thank you for being kind.

    Transportation Changes/Early Pick Up

Transportation changes for students must be made in writing to the teacher or called to the office no later than 3:30pm.  Early check outs must take place by 3:30pm.  After the dismissal period begins, students are moving in many areas of the building and it is extremely difficult for us to pass along messages at that point.  Thank you for your cooperation.

Please avoid blocking access to our parking lot at the far end of campus during arrival and dismissal each day. Also, please note that we now have turning lanes on Snelling, both right and left.  Do not park in the right-hand turn lane.  This backs up our carpool line and slows down dismissal.  Parking in this lane may result in a ticket from the Raleigh PD.  Thank you for your cooperation.

    Kiss and Go September 9

Begining Monday, September 9, parents may kiss, hug, and say goodbye at our front doors.  Once inside, there are many staff members who can direct students to classrooms if needed.  This gives everyone more than enough time to learn where to go.

Our safety plan requires that we know who is in the building at all times, thus the identification needed for check in and check out.  Beginning September 9, you will need to sign into the office via Lobbyguard if you enter the building to walk a child to class between 8:45am-9:15am.  This keeps our building safe and helps us account for everyone.  Thank you for your cooperation.

    Open House September 12

Please plan to join us for Open House on Thursday, September 12, 2019.  Our wonderful PTA will present their budget plans for the school year beginning at 6:00pm in the multipurpose room.  At 6:30, you will have the chance to visit your child(ren)'s classrooms and learn more about our program for this year.  We hope you will join us for this great event - please plan to attend!

    Title I??

So, what does it mean to be a Title I school, you ask?  Title I is a federal program that provides additional funding to schools that have greater than 45% of their students qualifying for reduced price lunches.  Green Elementary is a school wide Title I school, meaning that all students have access to these funds and benefit from the services/materials we secure using those funds.  At Green Elementary, these funds are used to pay salaries for an additional Guidance Counselor, Coaches in reading and math, and to purchase curricular materials that support learning for all students.  They also supplement technology purchases to address needs for our learners.

If you'd like to know more about Title I, please contact your child's teacher.

    Join the PTA!

At Green Elementary we have a fantastic PTA that is very supportive of our school.  Please join them in their work to support learning for children and to advocate for policies that support all children and schools.  So far this year the PTA has hosted Meet the Teacher, scheduled Popsicles in the Park, and will be available to parents at Open House for memberships, Spirit Wear, and so much more.  Please consider joining them in support of our children!

    Internet Safety Parent Presentation

A representative of the NC DOJ will be with us on September 17 in the evening to present to parents information on how to keep your children safe on the internet.  This is a growing area of concern for safety among all parents and we want to provide you the best possible support.  Please consider joining us for this event on September 17 - a registration form will come home soon. Please complete it and return it if you wish to participate.

    DreamBox Math

DreamBox Math is an online supplemental math program available to all Green Elementary students. DreamBox is in the process of transferring student data for the 2019-2020 school year. As soon as student information has been entered, students and families will be able to access the site from school and from home!  Teachers will provide you with access information once student accounts are complete. Look for more information in the coming weeks.

Thank you again for everything you do and for being part of our great Green Elementary community.  We need you - and we look forward to working with all of you this year!

    Peace -

    Dr. Brown, Principal
