DEPARTMENT CHAIR

After completing my engineering degree and working as a field engineer at the Pentagon for a year, I followed my passion and returned to Raleigh to become an educator. I have taught numerous science courses, including AP Physics 1 & 2, Honors Physics, Physical Science, Forensic Science, and Earth Science. I also designed and taught numerous STEM curriculum courses as a teacher-leader in the STEM Energy and Sustainability Academy at Athens Drive Magnet High School. Recently, I completed my Masters in Curriculum and Instruction from WGU and have focused on AI utilization in education.

I came to SCORE Academy because of a desire to help the students with the greatest needs. My goal is to provide all students with a safe learning space that supports them individually while providing all necessary materials for them to be successful with their academic work. Building prosperous relationships with students and modeling professional behavior while doing so should lead to successful outcomes for all students.

I’ve been a science teacher for over 12 years, with experience in both public and private high school settings. I also had the privilege of teaching Field Biology for two summers at the North Carolina Governor’s School. I’m thrilled to be part of the SCORE community and to continue sharing my passion for science with students.

Family is at the heart of everything I do. I’m married and the proud mom of two teenagers - a son and a daughter. We share our home with four dogs, and, as an animal lover, they bring me constant joy.

Hello! I’m honored to be part of the SCORE Academy team. I’ve spent the past 30 years teaching middle and high school science and have also enjoyed time coaching along the way. I’ve been happily married for 33 years and have two wonderful children - my daughter is a teacher in North Carolina’s Pre-K program, and my son is a deer biologist in Arkansas. I was born in Miami, so I’ve always loved the beach and sunshine. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family and running for fun. I’m passionate about supporting students as they work toward their goals, and I look forward to helping them succeed and graduate from SCORE!

I became a teacher in 2007, and it's the only job I could imagine having. However, my relationship with education hasn’t always been positive. I was labeled with a learning disability at a young age, which led to me not being an active participant in my education. I struggled with traditional school, so I dropped out and pursued my GED. Since then, I have earned my Bachelor’s degree in Cultural Anthropology and a Master’s degree in Secondary Education. I took a position at SCORE because I truly believe in what we do here - providing students with opportunities.

My family and I are originally from Lockport, NY, which is about 30 minutes outside of Buffalo. We moved to North Carolina in 2012. My wife and I have been married for over 20 years, and we have two boys and a dog. We enjoy traveling together as a family, and, when I’m on my own, I like to play the blues on the guitar.

Biology began as a passion for me as a kid growing up outside New York’s Hudson Valley, and it continued on the Caribbean island of St. Croix. I love to be outside swimming, hiking, skiing, boating, growing plants, and traveling. My hope for this class is that you come to appreciate what Biology can bring to your life!
