    Good Afternoon EM3 Families,

    We hope that you have all enjoyed this amazing fall weekend. We are looking forward to seeing students again tomorrow.

    End of 1st Quarter - The first quarter of the 2020-2021 school year will be Thursday, October 22nd. All work needs to be completed and turned in as soon as possible. 

    We will be hosting a Drive Through Report Card Pick-Up in the coming weeks. We will also work to mail home report cards of any student who is unable to pick up their report card. 

    Hispanic Family Event - The message below is for students and families who primarily speak Spanish. 

    Estimadas familias de EM3,

     En un esfuerzo para apoyar a nuestros estudiantes y familias hispanas, tendremos una sesión informativa el día jueves, 29 de octubre de 1:00 - 3:00 pm o 5:30 - 7:00 PM.  Los estudiantes deben traer sus Chromebooks para aprovechar esta oportunidad de recibir respuestas a sus dudas con el staff de la escuela.  Los padres tendrán la oportunidad de recibir información sobre las calificaciones de su estudiante, los medios de comunicación con sus maestros y las expectativas de asistencia diaria y aprendizaje de su estudiante.

    Early College Information - We are having our EM3 Early College Information Session on October 20th, at 5:30 pm via Google meet. Students who completed the Early College Interest form received an invite with the google meet link. Any students and parents who still want to attend will need to email Mr. Smith at msmith21@wcpss.net. Please continue to monitor the 8th-grade student services website for important information and updates. 

    Family Community Engagement Survey - Our EM3 Family Community Engagement Team would love to get your input. Please take 2 minutes to provide information and feedback using this link. Parent Survey

    Tune-Up Thursday - We will be hosting Tune-Up Thursday on Thursday, October 22nd, at 6:00 PM. The topic will be returning to in-person instruction at EM3. We will provide as much information as possible on our school-wide plan to return to in-person instruction. We will also be sharing links and information that the district has prepared and shared previously. 

    Virtual Magnet Tour - If you know any current 5th graders who would be interested in attending EM3 - The Academy of Visual & Performing Arts, please have them contact Ms. Joanna Caves so that we can invite them to a Virtual Magnet Tour. We are looking forward to showing off all that The Academy has to offer to many families in the coming weeks. acaves@wcpss.net is the best way to reach Ms. Caves at this time.

    Virtual Academy - Plan B Transition Confirmation - Information was sent  to families last week confirming enrollment in Virtual Academy and/or Plan B Transition. Students who are enrolled in Plan B transition received their cohort assignments in those confirmation emails. If you have any questions, please reach out to Ms. Sullivan at ssullivan2@wcpss.net 

    2nd Quarter Material Distribution- will take place this Friday, October 23rd. All families should plan on picking up their child’s materials. If you are unable to make it to any of the times listed below, please contact our front office, and we can schedule another time during the school day for you to retrieve your child’s materials. 

    6th Grade - 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM 

    7th Grade - 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

    8th Grade - 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

    Evening Opportunity (All grades) - 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM

    • Families will need to use the front carpool loop on Spring Forest 
    • Please write your child’s first/last name, ID number, and what math they’re in on a piece of paper and display it in your window.
    • Students will also need to return their novel from 1st quarter.
    • It's important for the students to know which math class they are in: Math 6 or Math 6+, Math 7 or Math 7+, Math 8 or Math 1
    • Families will need to remain in their car the entire time.
    • Our EM3 staff will be in PPE and properly spaced out.
    • Please email your grade level Assistant Principal ahead of time if you have multiple children in different grade levels.  We will make arrangements so that you only have to come one time for materials.

    Dreambox - All students in grades 6, 7, and 8 should be working on completing 6 - 8 lessons in Dreambox each week. The measure of student progress is made by lessons completed, not correct responses. Please see the parent portal for your child’s progress. We will be recognizing students for their growth, progress, and perseverance as they work through Dreambox lessons.

    Lexia - Students should be working to complete 90 - 100 minutes of time in the Lexia program each week. Like Dreambox, Lexia provides your child’s teacher with valuable information about their strengths as well as areas of need.     Good Afternoon EM3 Families,

    We hope that you have all enjoyed this amazing fall weekend. We are looking forward to seeing students again tomorrow. Thank you to all the families who have worked to partner with EM3 to ensure student engagement during the first three weeks of school this year. 

    Virtual Academy Families - For families who elected to participate in the Virtual Academy, your child(ren) will remain in the Virtual Academy through the first semester, January 15th.

    WCPSS will be updating Virtual Academy enrollment for the Spring semester in mid to late October. 

    Plan B Transition Families - Families who did not opt for Virtual Academy for the Fall Semester will be returning to school beginning November 9th. Students have been divided into three cohorts and Students will return to school for two rotations between November 9th and the end of the first semester. Cohort Information will be shared later this week.

    Virtual Academy - Plan B Transition Confirmation - We will be sending out information to families this week confirming enrollment in Virtual Academy and Plan B Transition. We will indicate cohort information and calendar information for families in both groups. 

    Family/Community Engagement - Thank you to all our families who participated in the Family Community Engagement Night last week. It was great to see so many students, families, and community members engaged in topics throughout the evening. We appreciate the feedback we received and look forward to planning the next one in the Spring.

    Asynchronous Learning Days - EM3 families will be receiving a letter later today explaining the district’s implementation of Asynchronous learning days. Be sure to read the letter carefully and to let us know if you have any questions. 

    Attendance - Please remind your child that in order to be counted ‘present’ for the day they must attend a live session or turn in completed work. Students who turn in a blank assignment will not be counted present. 

    Hispanic Heritage Month - We are celebrating and honoring creativity, culture and artistry September 15 - October 15 which is Hispanic Heritage Month. We have assembled a collection of art, stories, poetry, music, theatre and dance to honor Hispanic artists and art forms. Please explore this site and join us for this digital celebration.

    Dreambox - All students in grades 6, 7, and 8 should be working to complete 6 - 8 lessons in Dreambox each week. The measure of student progress is made by lessons completed, not correct responses. Please see the parent portal for your child’s progress.     Good Afternoon EM3 Families,

    We hope that you have all enjoyed this amazing fall weekend. We are looking forward to seeing students again tomorrow. Thank you to all the families who have worked to partner with EM3 to ensure student engagement during the first three weeks of school this year. 

    Assigned Work - Teachers are assigning work through Google Classroom each day. Be sure to review the work that your child is submitting. In some cases teachers are finding that students are submitting blank assignments rather than completed assignments. Work that students submit to their teachers is accessible to families and you are able to see what your child is turning in each day. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child’s teacher.

    Interim Reports - Interims grades will be ready for review in Powerschools this Friday. It is hard to believe that we are half way through the first quarter, but due to the orientation time, we have moved quickly through the first quarter. In addition to your ability to review grades in powerschool, we will be mailing home notices if students are failing any courses as of Friday. Please contact Pam Yancey if you need any support with logging in to Powerschools.

    Tune-Up Tuesday - Our next Tune-Up Tuesday will be next week 9-29-2020 at 6:30 PM. We are accepting ideas on what would be most helpful to families during this time. If you would like to make a recommendation, please submit it using this LINK.

On the request form, you will let Mrs. Massonette know when you want to pick up your library book. The request form also includes instruction videos for how to put a book on hold, how to see what books have been checked out to you, as well as where you will pick up and return your library books. We wanted to wait until the district was able to get technology out to students before we started this process. If you want to access and monitor your child’s progress, contact their Math and ELA teachers for how to gain parent access to your child’s account.. You can also check the gradebook as a grade will be entered each week. 

    Technology Needs - Technology that was requested by the district through the family survey is being distributed on a daily basis. If you requested technology for use by your child, please be sure to check your email and other messages from WCPSS. 

    Ms. Massonette is able to check on the status of your invitation to pick up technology if you feel that you have not received an invitation. You may contact Ms. Massonette at mmassonette@wcpss.net for more information.

Some of these were put in the mail last week and more will be sent out tomorrow afternoon. Keep an eye out for this information.

    Good Afternoon EM3 Families,

     

    We hope that this message finds each of you well! Our amazing staff continues to work diligently over the summer months to best prepare for a great start to the 2020-2021 school year on August 17th. 

     

    We are continuously working to develop the high expectations of teaching, learning and most importantly the support of students as we begin the year online. Our school based teams will be working this week to plan the 6th Grade Induction as well as the Orientation for 7th and 8th grade students and families as well.

     

    Virtual Academy:  Thank you to all our families who have researched the Virtual Academy Option for the 2020-2021 school year. So far, 53% of our school population has elected to be a part of the exclusive Virtual Academy. If you were going to register, but have not yet done so, you have until 5:00 PM Wednesday to complete the registration.

    Question/Answer Session with Mr. Marcin:  The PTSA and Mr. Marcin are developing time to hold a Virtual EM3 Question/Answer session with families who have questions about the upcoming school year.  More information will be shared soon around the specifics.  Please submit your question on this form and a staff member will respond via email or through email: Q & A Form.

     

    Message from Cafeteria:  It's that time of the year!   Time to renew your Child Meal Benefit Application for the 2020-2021 school year.   Please follow this link to the School Meals page on the EM3 web-site.  Additional information and links to the application can be found on this page.

     

    Tdap & Meningococcal Vaccine - 7th Graders!:  In accordance with North Carolina State Law, all students attending public schools entering 7th grade are required to receive Tdap and Meningococcal vaccines.  Most medical providers in Wake County are seeing appointments for health assessments and immunizations.  Please take this time to make an appointment with your provider.  We will share submission procedures in future communications.

     

    Guild Announcements – The Academy of Visual & Performing Arts teachers will be messaging students in the coming days regarding Guild placements for the 2020-2021 school year. Based on some changes to school re-opening, Virtual Academy, and some Powerschools issues we decided to delay these announcements to ensure accuracy.

    Good Afternoon EM3 Families,

     

    We hope that this message finds each of you well and staying cool on this hot and humid Monday. The good news is that today is suppose to be the hottest day of the year, and the rest of the week should be cooler!

     

    While there are certainly many unknowns for the 2020-21 school year, please know we will make this year special as an EM3 community.  We are here to ease any concerns or uncertainties you may have over the next several weeks.  Please know we are working hard behind the scenes to successfully launch the 2020-21 school year at East Millbrook Middle School! We have an AMAZING staff who are preparing for the year and are eager to meet your child regardless of the learning format. 

     

    Question/Answer Session with Mr. Marcin:  The PTSA and Mr. Marcin are developing time to hold a Virtual EM3 Question/Answer session with families who have questions about the upcoming school year.  More information will be shared soon around the specifics.  In the meantime, if you have immediate questions about Plan B, Virtual Academy, or anything else pertaining to the launch of 2020-21 at EM3, please submit your question on this form and a staff member will respond via email or through telephone:

    EM3 Plan B:  As mentioned last week, we are actively working to prepare for students to re-enter the building in August.  Through Plan B, EM3 students will be divided into 3 separate cohort groups.  Student cohort groups will cycle in three week segments (1 week of face-to-face instruction and 2 weeks of remote instruction).  Please know that there are still many logistics being addressed at the building level to ensure a successful launch of the 2020-21 school year.  Currently, EM3 staff are working to create Reopening Teams where the following are being developed to align with district expectations: 

    • Safety, Facilities, & Transportation
    • Instruction
    • Kick-Off for Students & Staff
    • Communication
    • Social Emotional & Student Support
    • Special Education

     

    These six teams will be working hard over the next few weeks.  As specific plans are developed, we will be sure to share progress with our students, families, and community members. 

     

    Virtual Academy:  Thank you to all our families who have researched the Virtual Academy Option for the 2020-2021 school year. So far, 41% of our school population has elected to be a part of the Virtual Academy.     East Millbrook Families and Community,

    It is our sincerest hope that this message finds each of you safe and well. We will continue to be here for every family, each day. We appreciate those students and families who have reached out via email, GoogleClassroom, Remind, phone calls, texts messages etc. If we can be of any support to anyone - please let us know. 

    Final Grades - Friday was the final day for students to turn in work for assignments that were provided prior to March 13th. Teachers are ensuring that grades are updated and finalized in Power Schools. Final grades will be posted by 5:00 PM on Friday, June 5th. 

    Below are three examples of comments that apply to final student grades. 

    1. If your child was passing a course prior to March 16th - the following comment will apply to their passing grade of PC-19:

    “Prior to school closing on March 16 due to COVID19, Your Child was meeting grade level expectations insert course name with at least a 60% average.  This meets the district’s requirements for receiving a PC-19.”

    1. If your child was not passing a course prior to March 16th but worked throughout remote learning to complete and/or make-up assignments in order to bring up averages, the following comment will apply to their passing grade of PC-19:

    “Prior to school closing on March 16 due to COVID19, Your Child was not meeting grade level expectations for the 3rd quarter insert course name. However, they have been participating in remote learning during this time and completing assignments. This has helped to improve their overall standing and as a result he/she will receive a PC-19 for their final course grade.”

    1. If your child was not passing a course prior to March 16th and did not engage in any opportunities during remote learning to increase their overall grade, they will receive a withdrawal mark of WC-19.

    “Prior to school closing on March 16 due to COVID19, Student Name was not meeting grade level expectations in insert course name with at least a 60% average. In addition, he/she did not participate in remote learning which could’ve helped to improve their final course grade to a PC-19. Although contact was made with the student/family to help them engage in remote learning, the student still chose not to complete any assignments.”

    The schedule for locker-clean out was mailed out last week. Families may come in during the days/time that correlate with their last names. 

    Locker Combinations - If your child does not recall their locker combination - please have them reach out to their homeroom teacher BEFORE arriving on campus this week. We will have locker combination lists printed, but that will delay the process of getting in and out of the buildings as quickly as possible. 

    Limited Access to Building - As shared in the message - only the student and/or ONE adult will be permitted access to their lockers.  

    Check Student Email - Each EM3 student has a WCPSS student email account. Be sure to have your child check this email account daily to receive important updates and information. 

    Instrument Returns/Uniform Returns/Book Returns - For students and families who need to return items to EM3 such as instruments, uniforms, etc. We will have stations for drop off when families are on campus June 3rd, 4th, and 5th. We will also have additional days/times set up for instrument return at EM3.

    Good Afternoon EM3 Families!

    We hope that you have all had a great Memorial Day Monday and that you are ready for the next four days of remote learning at EM3. 

    Guild Auditions - Information is posted in regards to Guild auditions. More information can be found online at https://www.wcpss.net/domain/16923#calendar92366/20200519/month

    Check Student Email - Each EM3 student has a WCPSS student email account. Be sure to have your child check this email account daily to receive important updates and information. 

    8th Grade Celebrations - We are working to plan safe and appropriate celebrations to recognize our 8th graders. Teams will hold online celebrations in three smaller groups (Designers, Composers, and Directors). 

    Each of these will be held the morning of Thursday, June 11th. Weather permitting, we will hold a Drive thru recognition at EM3 the afternoon of June 11th for all 8th grade students. 

    If there is inclement weather the afternoon of June 11th, the Drive thru recognition event will be moved to the afternoon of Friday, June 12th. 

    Details will be sent to 8th grade families regarding these events tomorrow (May 26, 2020). 

    Grade 6 and 7 Celebrations - Messages will be sent to families with the dates/times of 6th and 7th grade celebrations tomorrow, May 26, 2020.

    Field Trip Refunds - Many of you have already begun receiving your field trip refunds in the past two weeks. The last of the field trip refunds were mailed out to families this last Friday. Ms. Harris, our bookkeeper, can help you answer any more specific questions. Her email is tharris5@wcpss.net

    Technology Checked Out - If your family checked out any devices to use during this time of remote learning, many of you asked about when and how those devices would be checked back in. The district does not have plans to collect those devices at this time. We will message out any information about when the district plans to check the devices back in as soon as we know. 

    Personal Items at EM3 - Many students and families have personal items at EM3 that they left in lockers, etc. We are developing a plan for picking these items up from school by the end of the school year (June 12). EM3 students will be assigned days/times to pick up personal belongings from lockers on June 3rd, 4th, and 5th. A more specific schedule with all the details will be shared with families this week. 

    Instrument Returns/Uniform Returns/Book Returns - For students and families who need to return items to EM3 such as instruments, uniforms, etc. We will have stations for drop off when families are on campus June 3rd, 4th, and 5th. We will also have additional days/times set up for instrument return at EM3. 

    REMOTE LEARNING STUDENT RECOGNITION

    Jose G-M. (8th Grade) - During remote learning, Jose has consistently turned in great work.  He is conscientious and has not wavered in his desire to excel and learn.  His answers are thoughtful and complete.  He has shown a great sense of maturity and readiness for the transition to high school.  The Directors are proud of his continuous ability to ROAR!

     

    Ajani W. (7th Grade) - Ajani has modeled perseverance in this online learning environment.  In the last 4 weeks of Lexia power up, Ajani has completed 110 units logging-in over 12 hours of time.  He has exceeded expectations with his math class participation as well.  In the last 30 days, he has spent over 19 hours in Dreambox completing 69 lessons.  He actively participates in Office hours and lessons assigned by all of his teachers.  The 7th grade Director's team is proud to nominate Ajani W. as their student of the week.

    Anya K. (6th Grade) - Anya has been and continues to be a standout remote learner over these past 6 weeks! Anya is consistently online everyday (1) participating and (2) completing all of her assignments at the highest level. Anya has managed to stay on top of all of her online student responsibilities during this very challenging time. The Designers Team couldn't ask for a better model of what is expected of all of the students in the 6th grade. Excellent work, Anya!

    Kennedy H.T. (CTE) - Kennedy has brought her conscientious work ethic into the remote learning environment.  She completes all assignments, works incredibly hard and asks questions as needed. She completes all assignments in a timely manner.  She has been a joy to work with in both the 'live' and 'virtual' classrooms.

    Good Afternoon EM3 Families!

    Teacher Appreciation Week - Thank you to everyone who participated in Teacher Appreciation Week and helped to celebrate the amazing staff at EM3, we cannot thank you enough. A special thank you to the PTSA who worked to make this week even more special for our teachers!

    Guild Auditions - For our rising 7th and 8th grade students who are interested in auditioning for Guild in any of our Arts Disciplines - look for a message early this week about auditions, due dates, etc. 

    Check Student Email - Each EM3 student has a WCPSS student email account. Be sure to have your child check this email account daily to receive important updates and information. 

    Remote Learning Updates - Thank you to everyone who provided feedback regarding remote learning and how it is working for your family. We are excited to be discussing and making some changes based on your feedback. Look for messages from teachers who may begin adding some live modeling of new instruction and assignments during the instructional time that is listed on the remote learning schedule. 

    8th Grade Celebrations - We are working to plan safe and appropriate celebrations to recognize our 8th graders. More information on how we plan to celebrate and recognize our rising high schoolers will be messaged out this week as well.

We are able to process, print, sign, tear, and mail out about 65 checks each day. Ms. Harris, our bookkeeper, can help you answer any more specific questions. Her email is tharris5@wcpss.net

    REMOTE LEARNING STUDENT RECOGNITION

    Sean H. (8th Grade) - During remote learning, Sean has been a rock star! He has put forth a great amount of effort to complete assignments and takes advantage of office hours to help him understand the work. He is in constant contact with an interpreter to help him maneuver through the language barrier. The Directors are so proud of your efforts and the sense of responsibility you have shown!

     

    Karina L-S (7th Grade) - 7th Grade Directors Team would like to nominate Karina as our student of the week. Even before the interruption in our school year, Karina was a consistent and caring leader in the classroom. Since March, Karina not only has completed her assignments well responding to all feedback provided, but she has also maintained these high personal standards in the midst of a family move. The team is honored to have her on the team and wants to celebrate her dedication and commitment to her education and the amazing future she is creating with her habits of today.

    Sofia B-R. (8th Grade) - Sofia has worked diligently during remote learning to complete every assignment given to her.  She has turned in work that is thorough and she answers questions with great insights.  She has used office hours to ask teachers questions to ensure she understands what she is submitting.  We  appreciate her willingness to strive for excellence during this new experience! 

    Brooke H.-T. (CTE) - Brooke has worked hard all semester.  She has carried this exceptional work ethic into the online environment.  She communicates with me as her instructor and addresses concerns in a timely manner.  She produces work with on deadlines and quality work.
